77. Little Sand Creek Studio / Anne Aitken Anderson

Plein-air; paintings; demonstrations; cards

I am excited to welcome you to my new little studio this year! I have lots of local landscape paintings, prints and cards.

I am a plein-air painter, which means painting outside on location. When a scene or painting really inspires me, I bring the painting home from the field and create a larger studio piece.

Fernie Forge has moved to the Eye of the Needle heritage building in Fernie, where Sandra Barrett has retired as a blacksmith but continues to make felt from wool. Canadian-made metalwork, glass and fibre art is for sale in the gallery downstairs. As part of the Culture Tour this year, Marissa Alain will demonstrate crochet and will also have a pop-up shop of her originally designed crocheted garments. Upstairs is a selection of pewter jewellery and ornaments from Amos Pewter in Nova Scotia, hand-dyed yarns and square knitting needles and crochet hooks made in Ontario.

79. Fernie Arts Co-op

Pottery; photography; textile; paintings

The Fernie Arts Co-op is an artist-run shop located on Fernie’s historic main street, with 100 per cent of proceeds going back to our artists and the co-op. The co-op was formed in 2001 by a group of Fernie artists in need of a retail outlet to share and sell their wares. In 2006, it gained BC co-operative status and became governed by British Columbia’s Cooperative Association Act, with a rotating board of member-elected directors. As an artist-run space, member artists work as store attendants, giving our customers an opportunity to meet the maker and providing insight on creative process and local knowledge about the landscapes featured.

The gallery has grown professionally over the years to be locally renowned as the premiere outlet for Fernie art, and today features over 40 local artists. We are open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Stop in to see paintings, photography, pottery, woodwork, handmade jewellery, leather-work, textile art, handmade soaps, glassworks, multimedia works and more!
