17. Barbara Brown
Oil painting; books; poetry; forest art

Come find me this year! I am so pleased to be showing here with several other artist friends of mine—this will be well worth your visit!
I’m excited to show you new forest-scene miniature oil paintings available for purchase, as well as book and film sets, SYLVAN REFLECTIONS: Wanderings, Paintings & Ponderings From the Forest, and cards, fridge magnets, stickers, etc. We can also order prints for you of any full-size forest painting.
With my work, I share the beauty, the wonder and the wisdom to be found in the forest.
I paint forest scenes in oil on canvas, in a realistic and lyrical style, with the impression of a fair bit of detail. But each painting includes an otherworldly bit of mysticism or symbolism, sometimes hidden, always spellbinding, that I incorporate into it to express the magic of the wildwoods. My writing is poetic, meditative and philosophical, all written hoping to deepen your connection with nature. Bring some forest magic into your home, give it as a gift to a loved one, or just come to say hi! Do come!

18. Bernadette’s Portrait Art
Pastel portraits; watercolour landscapes

Bernadette’s journey as an artist began in childhood, shaped by an early and undeniable calling to create. By the age of 11, she was already accepting portrait commissions, quietly revealing a gift that would continue to deepen throughout her life.
Born and raised in Vancouver, Bernadette developed her craft under the loving guidance of her late father, an accomplished painter whose influence remains at the heart of her work. His presence, both in memory and in spirit, continues to inspire the sensitivity and depth that define her art. Over time, her work has garnered recognition for its emotion, depth and skill, from her watercolour landscapes and wildlife pieces to her pastel portrait commissions, where her ability to capture her subjects truly comes to life.
A former member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, Bernadette has shared her work through exhibitions and fundraisers, including the SPCA and the West Kootenay EcoSociety. In 1994, she made her home in Nelson, and has since moved to South Slocan, where her creative practice has taken on a deeper meaning, becoming not only a form of expression, but a source of healing and solace in times of profound grief.

19. Kathleen Luchtan
Paintings; magical realism; acrylic; pastel

Artist, activist, lover of nature, life and beauty. I seek to deepen my sense of connection to the world in all that I do. I have created art using metal, bone, wood and different gifts of nature. In this show, I will offer paintings in acrylic and pastel creating images of magical realism. I invite you to expand your awareness through your senses, to fully experience your connection to your own life force as you focus on this art. The power of art is in the pause you take to look deeply, and to follow what feelings you have as you enter the colours, shapes and images. It is this connection to life that can bring about the change needed to care for our earth and each other. The creative process brings me a deep joy that I wish to share with you.
May peace prevail and our sense of connection deepen.

22. Chris Rookwood Pottery
Ceramics; working studio

I am delighted to be opening my pottery studio for the Columbia Basin Culture Tour weekend and look forward to sharing my space and my connection with clay.
I throw and hand-build, making functional and sculptural pieces. I find the process works as an expression of my inner self and how I feel about the environment that surrounds me. Am I feeling centred and joyful, or perhaps stressed and anxious? What is the colour of the sky, the lake, the mountains? How does the landscape feel?
Working with clay grounds me through a connection with the landscape of our beautiful region. I am influenced by the Kootenay sky and water, mountains and rocks, plants and wildlife. I am fascinated with glazes and how they fit to the pot. How do their colours and textures show up on different clay bodies? How do they capture the light, darkness, shadows, lines and blurred traces of the nature that surrounds us?
Each piece is handcrafted to extend that connectivity from land to maker to user. I hope that the experience of enjoying handmade ceramics brings pleasure and meaningful contact with a wider sense of community and ecology.
