73. Empire of Dirt Residency
Artist residency

Empire of Dirt (EoD) Residency is located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Yaqan Nuki within the Ktunaxa Nation, also known as Creston. EoD is an artist-run, non-profit organization that fosters a nurturing environment for contemporary visual artists and writers to freely explore their practices, expand them in unexpected ways, and connect, whenever possible, with the local community. Artists are given the time and space to concentrate on the development of their own work. We also support creative connections amongst the artists that attend our residency. We prioritize self-determination and community-building.

74. Creston Museum
Museum; history; demonstrations; tours

Welcome to the Creston Museum, the home of the stories of the Creston Valley! We can’t wait to show you some of our favourite things.
You might already be familiar with the objects we have on display, but did you know there are thousands more? Like most museums, only a small fraction of our collection is on display at any given time, and the Culture Tour gives you a chance to explore some of them.
When you visit us, just tell our staff that you’re on the Culture Tour and we’ll make sure you get a special, behind-the-scenes tour. You’ll go into areas of the museum that are not normally open to the public.
We’ll show you some of the museum’s hidden treasures, give you a sneak peek into the archives and storage areas, and share some insights into how we do what we do.

75. Valiant Art Gallery
Art gallery; landscape paintings; oil paintings; retrospective show

Just opened! The Valiant Art Gallery is my new private art studio and online gallery here in Creston. I’m a Canadian realist oil painter, age 62.
I have gathered a large retrospective show and sale of my realistic Kootenay landscape paintings, from the past 25 years. Expect to experience a wide variety of original paintings, from tiny portraits in egg tempera to big landscapes in oils.
There are two spacious viewing rooms and a huge yard for outdoor display.
I’ve worked, struggled and shown art in the Slocan Valley for 30+ years, after receiving my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1986. I strive to make a strong emotional impact with each painting by improving my technical abilities.
My latest passion is painting directly on the canvas with oil sticks and finishing with a brush. These are big crayons made in Montreal from oil, wax and pure pigments.
I love talking about art history, paint-making and pigments.
The gallery is located just a short walk down Canyon St. from the grain elevator. I look forward to meeting you and will do my best to answer all your questions. Bring a friend!
