Multimedia box art

Typically, I have produced work in sign painting, screen printing, drawing and collaging. However, my recent creations are primarily a collection of eclectic multimedia box art and printmaking. My formal training included sign painting at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, Burnaby, and classes at Emily Carr School of Art, Vancouver; Malaspina College of Art, Vancouver Island; and Oxygen Art Centre, Nelson. The work I have produced is varied and usually characterized as unconventional.

51: JAN KOZLOWSKI

Photography; Portraits; Dolls; Vintage

My photography consists of portraits of dolls in situ found in antique stores and flea markets throughout the US and Canada. These portraits inspire a narrative that leads me to explore the dolls’ histories and their stories. I try to capture the essence of the dolls’ past in contrast with their discarded present predicament, awaiting their next stage of purpose.

52: DUPAS DESIGNS

Ceramics; Functional; Sculptural; Botanicals

Through the process of hand-building, coiling and slip casting, my clay sculptures and functional work allow me to express my animated view of the world. I am fascinated by exotic seed pods and flowers, which has led to an exploration of texture, shape and colour. My botanical designs are not made with the intent of reproducing the actual flora, but rather as a reference and inspiration to create hybrid sculptural forms and otherworldly botanical curiosities.

53: BALFOUR CHAPEL

Museum; Historical site; Balfour

This old church, built in 1892, still operates today for Sunday-morning Christian services but also is available to rent for weddings and small performances. It is the St. Michael and All Angels’ Chapel and Performance Centre, purchased for the community by the Heritage Committee of the Balfour & District Business & Historic Association to preserve our area heritage. It is the oldest community building in Balfour. Its connection to First Nations is through a place of refuge during flooding in the early 1900s when the church was used as their temporary sleeping location. There is a mark on the outside of the building to show how high the waters got.

54: DIANE TRUDEL

Acrylic painting mixed media

I am absorbed with texture and transparency. My preferred self-developed technique is based on layerings of acrylic washes and infusions of mixed media that result in rich and luminous depth of colour. In my travels, I’m often inspired by the traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community and its way of life. Capturing the visual impression of the moment in relation to the shifting effect of light and colour, my distinctive style can be defined as “folkloric impressionist.” The haunting beauty of the natural world is the well of my inspiration, and my travels to exotic environments enhance the colours of my visual palette.

You are likely to see something that you never have seen before, or perhaps, if you look hard enough, you might see something you vaguely recognize. 56: J.B. FLETCHER STORE MUSEUM

Heritage site; Artisans

The J.B. Fletcher Store, built in 1896, is a unique piece of BC history. Although there are many towns in the interior where commercial buildings and general stores from the 1890s have survived, there are only a handful with unaltered interiors. Most of the artifacts in the store are from its years of operation. Recently, the J.B. Fletcher Store has undergone a massive restoration thanks to the Built Heritage Grants provided by Columbia Basin Trust through Heritage BC. A visit to the store is truly a step back in time. The J.B. Fletcher Museum also proudly hosts two local businesses and many local artisans. There are spectacular, unique handmade wares for sale in a variety of media.

57: FAT QUARTERS STUDIO (DEYANNE DAVIES)

Quilting

My grandmother and great-grandmother were both quilters; it was a natural fit for me. I have been quilting for 20 years. Over this time it has become my passion (obsession!). I like to think of my bed quilts as pieces of functional art, using fabric as my palette. I enjoy introducing others to quilting and sharing my knowledge. I am now a member of the Kaslo Quilting Group and have taught classes through recreation groups and Selkirk College. My quilts have been shown in the Canadian Quilters Association’s national shows.
