Rock-painting; Labyrinth; Acrylics; Sculpture

I built a labyrinth/maze out of local stones, which began two years ago. I have painted hundreds of rocks for it but have also invited the public to add their own painted rocks, so it is now a community collaboration of art, from the very young to the very old, as well as my own creations. Every year it becomes more colourful and vibrant.

110: TONY AUSTIN

Forging demos; Sumi-e; Carvings; Jewellery

Artist/artisan Tony Austin works his creative magic on the banks of mystical Mark Creek in Kimberley, the heart of the East Kootenay. He works in metal, wood and sumi-e (Japanese brushwork), from one-of-a-kind commissions and traditional Noh masks to public sculptures. His training in brushwork is revealed in the strong lines and subtle curves of his forge work, from traditional blacksmithing and architectural iron works to repoussé, sculpture and jewellery. Tony’s flame-coloured forge works and sculptures create a visual feast. His works are also available at the Marysville Artisan Shop, main street Marysville. You can also enjoy his public sculptures: Cranbrook Ed, downtown Cranbrook; Coming Home, Marysville Eco Park, Marysville; The Sullivan Mine Commemorative Public Sculpture at the west end of the Platzl, Kimberley; and The Lost Salmon, James Chabot Provincial Park, Invermere.
