79. Dragon’s Rest Working Studios, Gallery & Dragon Iron Forge

Forging demo; Noh masks; sumi-e painting; repoussé

Artist/Artisan Tony Austin works his creative magic on the banks of mystical Mark Creek in Kimberley, the heart of the East Kootenay. He works in metal, wood, sumi-e (Japanese brushwork) and Noh masks, from one-of-a-kind commissions to public sculptures. His training in brushwork is revealed in the strong lines and subtle curves of his forge work, from traditional blacksmithing and architectural iron-works to repoussé, sculpture and jewellery. Tony’s flame-coloured forge works and sculptures create a visual feast.

His works are also available at the Marysville Artisan Shop, Marysville, and the Kimberley Gallery in the Platzl, Kimberley. You can also enjoy his public sculptures: Cranbrook Ed in downtown Cranbrook; Coming Home in Marysville Eco Park; The Sullivan Commemorative Sculpture at the west end of the Platzl, Kimberley; and The Lost Salmon at James Chabot Provincial Park, Invermere.

80. Pat Bavin Art

Acrylic/collage paintings

Pat Bavin grew up in Windermere and now lives in Invermere. Pat’s creativity started in the 1970s taking sketching classes and doing stained glass. In 1981 he enrolled in glass-blowing at the Pilchuck Glass School and returned in 1984 and 1994. Pat is the founder of Bavin Glassworks in 1988 and retired in 2018 when he handed the business over to his son Ryan, after 30 years as a father/son team. Pat started painting in acrylic in 2001 and did an extensive series of workshops for the next nine years, studying under John Cooper, Lian Quan Zhen, Susan Woolgar, Tessa Nunn and Gerry Brommer. He did multiple week-long sessions with Cooper in colour theory and composition and collage with Brommer. Pat has always done outdoor sketches and photographs prior to painting in his studio, where he developed his own style of creating spaces with heavy black line-work using a mix of compositions and colour schemes, with intuition as a primary tool. It’s only natural to inspect and alter designs based on his 34 years of Feng Shui practices, which confirm the use of elements, spaces, line and form. Today, Pat mixes painting with his passion as a shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) guide, using nature as his main designer.

81. Bavin Studios

Glass-blowing; hot glass sculpture; glass jewellery; photography

Bavin Studios (Bavin Glassworks until 2019) was established in Windermere by Pat Bavin in 1988. Pat’s son Ryan apprenticed with his father for several years and then attended the Pilchuck Glass School near Seattle. In 2001 the Bavins moved the studio to its current location closer to Invermere.

In the studio we have a gallery section to show and sell our work. We also show and sell a handful of local artists that have worked with us over the years.

Ryan continues to make vessels and sculptures with hot glass, which are shown and collected worldwide.
