Functional pottery

Ayal Heinrichs is a ceramic artist who lives and works in Riondel. Having grown up on the rainy West Coast of BC, her work, both functional and conceptual, is heavily influenced by the landscapes that surrounded her as a child. Ayal primarily makes functional work that explores the textures and patterns of the natural world. She is interested in the role functional pottery has played throughout history and its potential to provoke thought and bring beauty into mundane daily rhythms. She fell in love with clay after taking a throwing class at a community studio in 2018 and studied the craft further at Kootenay School of the Arts, where she received a certificate in ceramics. After her time at KSA, Ayal apprenticed with several ceramic artists, gaining practical experience and mentorship before moving to Saskatchewan, where she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics from the University of Regina in 2024. In 2023, Ayal was a guest artist at the Fired Up! exhibition “Smoke and Fire” on Vancouver Island and has participated in several group shows at Fifth Parallel Gallery in Regina. You can find her work at the Craft Connection in Nelson and Ro Coffee in Riondel.

69. Diane Trudel Art Studio
Acrylic paint; mixed media; textured canvas

Vignettes of human interaction and portraying the spirit therein is what I seek to capture at the core of my work. The emotional entity is the focus of my creative exploration: the tenderness and tenacity of humans, the flora and fauna of the natural world, and the shapes and shades of forever-shifting landscapes. Such intangible moments of human interaction are my paint, and the shapes and shades of the Earth my canvas.
I am absorbed with texture and transparency. My preferred self-developed technique is based on layerings of acrylic washes and infusions of mixed media that result in rich and luminous depth of colour.
