SUMMARY:Valley Deep\, Mountain High – Tom Wayman Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:West Kootenay author Tom Wayman will launch two new books—a prose memoir and a collection of poems. \nWayman’s memoir\, from BC’s Harbour Publishing\, is entitled The Road to Appledore or How I Went Back to the Land Without Ever Having Lived There in the First Place. The book covers Wayman’s adventures and misadventures since moving to the Slocan Valley in 1989. Besides accounting for the author’s reasons for relocating from Vancouver\, the book describes his life in the Valley over three decades via the four seasons and the four classical elements: water\, fire\, earth and air. \nWayman’s new collection of poems\, How Can You Live Here? from Alberta’s Frontenac House\, gathers poems originally published in such journals as The Walrus\, Queen’s Quarterly\, and The Hudson Review. The poems look at the human and natural communities of the Slocan Valley through a more lyrical lens\, although 21st Century issues appear\, too\, including a section on living through the recent pandemic in a rural setting. \nWed May 29th\, Nelson Public Library

SUMMARY:Tammy Marcer Gallery Show
DESCRIPTION:Artist Statement \nEmbarking on a journey through the vibrant landscapes of the Kootenays and beyond\, I was awash with\na spectrum of colour and feeling that beckoned me to capture its essence. The picturesque scenery\,\nfrom verdant valleys to crystal-clear lakes\, offered a canvas unlike any other. This adventure was not just\nabout travel; it was a pilgrimage in search of inspiration for what would become my first art gallery\nexhibit: Kootenays in Colours.\nMy initial enchantment with the Kootenays was ignited by a single\, captivating photograph that\nshowcased the areas awe-inspiring beauty under the glow of an afternoon sun. This image\, alive with\nvibrant hues and a tranquil yet wild essence\, planted a seed within me. It was not long before this\nblossomed into a fervent yearning to immerse myself in these landscapes\, to see\, feel\, and ultimately\npaint them through my own lens. This anticipation of discovery\, of unearthing new vistas and hues\, was\nthe wellspring of my inspiration. The natural splendor\, and shifting seasons\, unveiled fresh palettes and\nmoods\, feeding my artistic vision and setting the stage for my journey into art.\nChoosing the right venue was critical—a place that not only highlighted the art but also echoed the spirit\nof the Kootenays. As I was born in Fernie\, so shall be my art. The Arts Station was my only choice for my\nfirst gallery show. It was an environment that promised engagement and appreciation from a diverse\naudience. The vibrant colours and landscapes that I had so meticulously translated onto canvas will be\nthe subjects of admiration and critique. This vibrant interaction will be the ultimate affirmation of my\njourney\, a sign that my canvas has become a bridge. This bridge will be the link between my inner world\nwith the outer world of others\, fostering a shared experience of wonder and reflection. I step into the\nfuture\, ready to embrace the myriad of colours and feelings that await me. \nArtist Bio \nTammy is a digital artist\, whose self-taught journey has culminated in a body of works as vibrant and\ndiverse as the experiences that have shaped her. Tammy strives to captivate viewers with a unique\nblend of passion\, emotion and depth. Tammy’s artistry is characterized by its dynamic use of color and\ntexture\, creating works that are not just seen but also felt. Tammy’s approach to digital art is intuitive\nand exploratory\, pushing the boundaries of traditional techniques with innovative use of light and\nshadow. From the serene landscapes to the chaotic abstracts\, Tammy’s travels have been the\ncornerstone of her artistic inspiration. Her portfolio is a rich tapestry of vivid colors\, intricate patterns\nand forceful compositions that reflect the diversity and beauty of the world as seen through her eyes.\nTammy’s work invites viewers on a visual journey that transcends boundaries and sparks the\nimagination.\nAs she prepares for her first gallery show\, Tammy stands at the cusp of a new chapter in her artistic\njourney. Join Tammy as she embarks on this exciting phase of her career\, and experience the world\nthrough her inspired creations. Her gallery show is not just an exhibition – it’s a celebration of the\npassion\, perseverance and perspective that define her as an artist.

SUMMARY:Heritage City Tango Marathon
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to offer a new Tango Marathon in Nelson BC Canada\, held May 31-June 2 of 2024.\n\nThis 3 day event will be in one of Western Canada’s prettiest and artsiest small towns. Registration is by individual or pair\, no partner required. However\, we will strive for role balance at this event\, so we recommend signing up with a partner. The intent of this event is to create a fabulous series of Milongas\, with generous food and drink offerings\, and a warm atmosphere of mutual inclusion and respect.  We seek to honor the codigos and traditions of Argentine Tango and to create an atmosphere of camaraderie and togetherness. All Tango styles are welcome as long as good floorcraft and consideration for others is maintained. So looking forward to sharing our little town and big hearts with you!\n\n\n\n\n\nWe have a lot of great moments mapped out for you on this weekend\, from a pre-event meet and greet in the park (weather permitting) to some fun ice-breaker activities during registration times before the opening Milonga on Friday.   \n\nIf you are new to Tango Marathons\, the idea is simple: it’s like a festival except that instead of focusing on classes\, we focus on the Milongas and time on the floor spent dancing.

SUMMARY:APOLLO SUNS and EARTH FREAKS
DESCRIPTION:Founded by Ed Durocher\, Apollo Suns is a 7-piece instrumental collective from Winnipeg\, Manitoba. The band fuses the influence of jazz\, rock and psychedelic music\, to create their own unique sounds with the dancefloor in mind. They have self-released three EPs: ‘Each Day a Different Sun’ (2017)\, ‘Dawn Offerings’ (2019)\, ‘A Relationship of Force’ (Color Red\, 2021)\, and were awarded “Instrumental Artist of the Year” at Western Canadian Music Awards in both 2018/2020.\n\nDrawing from a diverse blend of influences\, Earth Freaks present their own unique brand of nostalgia induced psych-rock in an explosive high energy format. Through carefully crafted songwriting and an infectious stage presence\, they take the listener out of our current reality for a short trip back to a place in time where music was raw and untethered.
