SUMMARY:Oktopus: Performing Arts Trail
DESCRIPTION:The Performing Arts Trail series\, presented by Trail & District Arts Council\, brings you Oktopus.Based in Quebec\, Oktopus is a major presence on the Canadian world music scene\, with over 250 performances to its credit at home and abroad. The octet is primarily devoted to klezmer—the musical heritage of Eastern European Jews—distinguished by a novel approach that incorporates various components of the classical and Quebecois repertoire\, with some jazz and Balkan accents. The group’s eight virtuoso musicians offer festive\, high-energy performances\, at once melancholic and profound\, sprinkled with humour and spiced with narrative\, in which original compositions and finely crafted arrangements combine with improvisation. Its members’ complicity\, shared passion\, and hard work are what makes each of their performances so memorable\, Oktopus is simply… ‘spectentacular’!Oktopus’ distinctive music is undeniably rooted in the klezmer tradition\, reflecting the rich history of a thousand-year-old community\, its persecutions and celebrations\, tears and laughter\, or both at the same time. The members of Oktopus are inspired by the music they hear throughout their own travels. Thus\, the melodies of several classical composers\, such as Bartók\, Brahms\, Prokofiev or Enescu are rearranged by the octet\, particularly their works derived from folk themes. Quebec songwriters are also sources of inspiration\, with Leclerc and Vigneault being added to the group’s repertoire. To hear and see more visit their website at https://www.oktopus.ca.MUSICIANS● Gabriel Paquin-Buki – clarinet\, composition and arrangements● Veronica Ungureanu– violin● Noémie Caron-Marcotte – flute● Matthieu Bourget – bass trombone● Madeleine Doyon – tenor trombone● Guillaume Martineau – piano● Maxime Philippe – drums and percussions● Francis Pigeon – trumpetAWARDS● 2021 – Nominee Canadian Folk Music Award● 2021 – Nominee Opus Award● 2021 – « Special prize for the most creative fusion of ancient and contemporary music traditions » awarded by the Slovak Radio Bratislava● 2018 – Nominee Canadian Folk Music Award● 2018 – Nominee Juno Award● Grand gagnant de la 8me édition du concours les syli d’or de la musique du monde2 x 40 min sets + intermission5 Show Series Pass: $123Individual Adult Ticket: $30.00\, except Shane Koyczan which is $35.PLUS:• the bargain price of $10 for anyone under 30 years old• 2 for 1 for hospital / medical employees for all Performing Arts Trail shows.• New attendees 2 for 1: Bring someone who hasn’t been to the theatre before and get 2 for 1 for all Performing Arts Trail shows. SUMMARY:Sitka String Quartet coming to Rossland!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Rossland Miners Hall on Friday\, February 24th for the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture presentation of: Sitka String Quartet! We hate to end our Performance Series season but at least we get the pleasure of welcoming this talented group of women to the stage.Sitka String Quartet was formed by friends and colleagues in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. After years of playing together in the larger ensemble\, and sharing numerous concerts as chamber musicians within the VSO Chamber Players\, it was a natural extension of their like-minded musical curiosity\, open-heartedness\, and a fearless willingness to explore quartet repertoire across many genres that propelled these four musicians to form a professional quartet. They have enjoyed shared and individual performances in Italy\, France\, Germany\, Denmark\, Poland\, Austria\, Japan\, China\, Korea\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, and Australia. Their affection for British Columbia has kept them living within a few kilometres of one another\, and they are proud to perform in their home\, BC\, whenever the opportunity arises. Memorable live performances within the last ten months include an outdoor performance on Grouse Mountain near Vancouver\, and performances at the Firehall Theatre\, and High Beams Dreams in Gibsons\, BC.Help us welcome Cassandra Bequary\, Karen Gerbrecht\, Emilie Grimes\, and Olivia Blander as Sitka String Quartet! One thousand thank-you’s to our generous sponsors this season including Teck Trail Operations Ltd\, ITS Consulting\, the City of Rossland\, the BC Touring Council\, the BC Arts Council and the Province of British Columbia. For more information please contact: performance.rcac@gmail.comSee you at the Miners Hall!Sitka String Quartet (Music- String Quartet)90 minute performance; two 45 minute sets with intermissionFebruary 24\, 2023\, 7:30PMDoors open at 7pmMiners Hall\, 1765 Columbia Ave\, Rossland$25/ticket

SUMMARY:Larry: Candice Roberts
DESCRIPTION:Trail & District Arts Council brings you LARRY by award-winning Canadian Clown Artist Candice Roberts on February 3 at The Bailey Theatre.LARRY sees Candice Roberts assume her alter ego\, Larry\, in a complex\, fearless\, and very funny portrait of a small-town Canadian dude on a path of self-discovery. Larry tries to be a woke feminist without compromising his masculinity\, so that he can prove that he’s worthy of a good woman\, can quit drinkin’ and even take up “medertation”. Bold\, smart and outrageously funny\, it turns out that LARRY’s journey into his own psyche uncovers more than he expected. \nRoberts uses LARRY to explore her experiences growing up as a female in rural BC\, Canada in the 1980s. We will begin by discussing comparative measuring\, to get accurate proportions in the underpainting. Then we will move to colour and concentrate on how to render form and construct the features. Participants can use any medium they like in this course. Kristy will be doing the demo in oils and will provide a suggested supplies list for those interested in using oils. By the end of the course students will have a painting that they’re proud of as well as a solid understanding of how to mix colours. The class will include demonstrations\, discussions and individual instruction and feedback. The beginner will learn fundamental principles such as how to mix colours and render form modelling. The more advanced student will discover how to take their work to the next level and achieve the finish that they desire.”This workshop is partially funded by the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance. For further information check out the Events and Workshops page on the West Kootenay chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artist website at http://www.wkcfca.com/events-and-workshops/

SUMMARY:The Fretless
DESCRIPTION:Four ferocious players\, masterful composition\, and a genre-bending sound—Juno award-winning The Fretless is a Canadian quartet that has firmly taken its place on the map to a progressive form of “trad”.A supergroup of celebrated solo artists\, The Fretless has been creating a singular and signature sound that dares to expand the idea of what a string music quartet can be—transforming fiddle tunes and folk melodies into intricate\, beautiful\, high-energy arrangements that have quickly gained a dedicated following and accolades from around the world. Within what appears to be a simple construct — two fiddles\, a viola\, and a cello — The Fretless has created a sound that is distinctly rich\, multi-layered\, and uniquely percussive. This tonal quality is pushing traditional music to new heights\, producing a completely fresh approach to Folk music. \nBy putting fiddle tunes and folk melodies from the traditions of Irish\, Scottish\, Celtic\, bluegrass and old-timey American and Canadian music into a classical format\, these musicians have created unique music that is complex\, multi-layered\, and passionately expressive.Vocalist Madeline Roger will be singing many of the songs from “Open House”.Also! For the show at the Capitol\, The Fretless will be joined by Emily Millard to guest on a couple songs. Emily just moved to Nelson in the fall to begin teaching voice at Selkirk.
