SUMMARY:Gardens Will Save Us
DESCRIPTION:Alanda Greene’s book The Impermanence of Broccoli and Other Lessons from the Garden will resonate with anyone who has ever found themselves wondering about the inter-relatedness of life and how that understanding can meet the global crisis. Greene believes that the skills to build a sustainable future can be found in the garden. She will read from her newly published book on Wednesday\, October 18\, 7pm at the Nelson Public Library. \nGreene says that it is in the garden that “we can learn to listen to other life forms\, learn about the healing impact of beauty and presence\, gain confidence in the significance of our actions by remembering that small actions can have large outcomes.” For gardening is where she has learnt about herself: “about the concepts\, attitudes and behaviours that can unconsciously limit my understanding of how I am connected to the other-than-human beings. It is a non-judgmental context that allows change and insight.”

A personal story revealed through poetic movement and storytelling. \nThis is a story of a woman who loses her innocence at a young age due to cultural inequity\, whilst navigating a terrain foreign to her ancestors. This is how she frees herself from centuries of colonisation and displacement. Zaynab Mohammed reflects upon what she has learned by leaning on the art of listening to herself\, to others and to the Earth\, in this carefully woven debut one-woman show. \nTickets are $10 for general admission\, and $8 for Museum Members (check your email for the promo code!) \nCreated with support from the Nelson Museum\, Archives & Gallery and the Nelson & District Arts Council\, and with funding from Columbia Basin Trust and Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance.

SUMMARY:Hey Viola!
DESCRIPTION:Hey Viola!\, a musical exploration of Canadian Civil Rights hero\, Viola Desmond. But who is Viola Desmond…? other than the newest face on Canada’s ten-dollar bill. She is best known for her courage in refusing to leave the whites-only section of Nova Scotia’s Roseland cinema in 1946\, a decision that made history\, but she was also a feminist and beauty product icon. What was the fire within this successful black Canadian businesswoman that gave her the courage and confidence to stand up to systemic racial injustices in Canada?
