SUMMARY:"Kootenay Landmarks" Open Adjudicated Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:2025 Open\, Adjudicated Art Exhibit Celebrates Kootenay Landmarks | Art Gallery Kimberley Showcases Regional Creativity from January 30 to February 23\, 2025 \nKimberley\, BC—The stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage of the West and East Kootenays will take center stage at the 2025 Open\, Adjudicated Art Exhibit\, hosted by Art Gallery Kimberley. From January 30 through February 23\, 2025\, artists from across the region and beyond are displaying their unique interpretations of “Kootenay Landmarks.” This annual event is not only a celebration of the region’s beauty but also an opportunity for artists to gain exposure\, sell their work\, and compete for three awards: the Kootenay Art Prize\, the Inspiration Award\, and the newly introduced Peoples’ Choice Award. \nA Platform for Artistic Expression \nThe idea for this open art exhibit stemmed from a desire to offer more artists the chance to showcase their work in a professional gallery setting. “Winter is a quieter time for the gallery\, so creating an open exhibit during this season allows us to connect with more artists and provide a platform for their creativity\,” says Irma de Visser\, owner and operator of Art Gallery Kimberley. The event will feature an inclusive online gallery and webshop\, ensuring maximum visibility for every participating artist. \nA Joyful Experience for Artists and the Community \nExhibiting artists gain several benefits\, including: \n– Being part of an awesome celebration of Visual Art and The Kootenay region. \n– Guaranteed placement in an online gallery for a month. \n– A chance of placement in the gallery for a month. \n– Opportunities to connect with collectors\, peers\, and art enthusiasts. \n– Eligibility for prizes. \nFor Irma\, organizing this exhibition is a labor of love. “One of the highlights for me is connecting with (new) artists and watching their creations inspire our community. Fitting all the artworks into the gallery space without compromising their presentation is a welcome challenge.” \nA Fresh Approach to Awards \nTo make the adjudication process more inclusive and rewarding\, the gallery is using a unique selection method. Adjudicators will shortlist 10 artworks from the 20-25 artworks selected for display in the gallery\, and a random draw will determine the recipient of the Kootenay Art Prize. Similarly\, the Inspiration Award will be selected through a draw from the non-shortlisted entries\, offering every artist a chance to shine. The Peoples’ Choice Award invites the public to cast their votes in the gallery\, ensuring community involvement in the celebration. \nMeet the Adjudicators \nCaprice Hogg (Kimberley\, BC): oil painter\, teacher\, mentor\, and writer whose artistic journey spans three decades\, Caprice brings a wealth of experience and a passion for inspiring emerging artists. \nDavid Barnes (Creston\, BC): accomplished ceramic artist and teacher with a career rooted in innovation\, David’s dedication to mentoring the next generation of artists has left an indelible mark on the art community. \nIrma de Visser (Kimberley\, BC): Owner of Art Gallery Kimberley and a dedicated advocate for the arts\, Irma has played a pivotal role in fostering creativity and connection within the Kootenay region. \nJoin the Celebration\nThe public is warmly invited to experience the exhibit at Art Gallery Kimberley (Mon. – Wed. by appointment | Thur. – Sun. 10 am – 5 pm) and online from January 30 to February 23\, 2025. New this year is the introduction of a Peoples’ Choice Award allowing all visitors to vote for their favourite artwork. In addition\, there will be a Parallel Art Exhibit at Centre 64 (Tue.-Sat. 1-4 pm) for the artworks that aren’t included in the gallery selection at Art Gallery Kimberley. The festivities will culminate with a closing reception and award ceremony on Friday\, February 21 at 5:00 PM at the gallery\, providing an opportunity to celebrate the artists and their contributions to the region’s vibrant art scene. \nFor More Information\nContact Irma de Visser at info@artgallerykimberley.com for details on submissions\, exhibit schedules\, and more. \nCelebrate the art\, culture\, and landmarks of the Kootenays with us this winter—we can’t wait to see you there!

SUMMARY:Sechile Sedare – Leela Gilday and Jay Gilday perform together
DESCRIPTION:The Trail & District Arts Council presents contemporary roots duo Sechile Sedare\, a perfect pairing of JUNO award-winning Leela Gilday and Jay Gilday\, on Tuesday\, January 28 at 7:30 pm. Part of the Performing Arts Trail series in The Bailey Theatre. \nSechile Sedare (seh-chee-leh’ ‘seh-dahr-eh’) means ‘my younger brother\, my older sister’ in the Dene language. And these sibling songwriters hit notes of nostalgia\, hope\, and humour in songs about their family history\, connection to the land and water\, and the twists and turns of fate. \nThis musical collaboration sees Jay and Leela co-write and co-create new repertoire together\, harnessing their talents as deeply insightful and genuine storytellers. Their voices blend in perfect harmony\, in songs created during lockdown in 2021 and during a residency at the Banff Centre.\nJay Gilday is a vagabond turned mailman\, who has searched for himself in the depths of Folk\, blues\, traditional\, rock and most recently soul music. As a half Dene\, half Canadian-Irish man who travelled the roads of Canada in his youth\, he weaves work\, family\, and performance into song. Jay performs with a powerful voice and heavy hitting guitar\, finger-style or flat-picked\, your choice! \nLeela Gilday was born and raised in the Northwest Territories\, and she writes about the people and the land that created her. The power in her voice conveys the depth of her feelings of love and life in a rugged environment and vibrant culture\, as if it comes straight from that earth. Leela’s family is from Délįne on the shore of Great Bear Lake and her rich vocals dance across the rhythmic beats of traditional Dene drumming and bass line. \nLeela Gilday – Awards & Accolades\n2021 JUNO Award ** Indigenous Artist of the Year\n2021 Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Award ** Social Voice\n2021 Canadian Folk Music Award Winner ** Indigenous Songwriter of the Year (North Star Calling) \n2 x 45 minute sets \nPhotos by Olya Shendrik. \nSingle tickets are $30. Under 30 years is $10. \n6-show pass $168 or Pick Your Own season by becoming a Patron Member for $25 and get 20% off Trail Arts Council presentations and other benefits. All tickets available online at tickets.trail-arts.com\, by phone at 250-368-9669\, and in person at the Bailey Box Office at 1501 Cedar Ave.\, Trail. \nReminder – please do not wear strong smelling perfumes or colognes to the Bailey Theatre as the building is a scent free zone. SUMMARY:DZVINKA” - Ukraine’s Robin Hood Story
DESCRIPTION:Tryzub Ukrainian Dance Ensemble presents\,  “DZVINKA” – Ukraine’s Robin Hood Story. \nIn the heart of Ukrainian culture\, where tradition dances hand in hand with passion\, there exists a legacy that spans half a century. Welcome to the jubilant celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Tryzub Ukrainian Dance Society. Since its inception in 1974\, Tryzub has stood as a beacon of artistic excellence\, a symphony of spirited footwork and colorful costumes that tell the story of Ukraine’s rich heritage. \n“DZVINKA\,” Tryzub’s 50th Anniversary Show\, is a unique 2-hour stage production that unveils over one hour of original music\, composed and recorded amidst the shadows of war in Ukraine. Featuring new elaborate costumes crafted in Ukraine\, the mesmerizing choreography takes audiences on a riveting journey encompassing excitement\, anticipation\, laughter\, and moments of despair. \nThe first half of the show introduces an original storyline centered around Ukrainian folk hero Oleksa Dovbush—an outlaw\, a hero to the people\, and leader of the Opryshky. The second half navigates through the diverse regions of Ukraine\, showcasing the delicate balance between intricate technique\, colorful costumes\, the grace and beauty of our female dancers\, and the strength\, determination\, and gravity-defying tricks of our male dancers. \nDespite formidable challenges\, the costumes and music were created in Ukraine by brave individuals.  As a result of the shutdown of Ukrainian airspace due to Russia’s war\, the costumes were transported by van out of the country and then flown to Canada from neighbouring nations.  These costumes embody resilience amid adversity. As Russian military targets museums\, theaters\, and historical sites\, orchestra musicians\, scattered and forced to record in school classrooms\, join hands with Tryzub in crafting original works like “DZVINKA.” \nNet Proceeds from the performance will be donated to support Ukrainian Newcomer programs that support the mental health and wellness of youth impacted by war.
