SUMMARY:Lucas Myers: ROOF
DESCRIPTION:Trail & District Arts Council and the Trail Community Action Team bring you Lucas Myers in “Roof”.In ROOF\, a humorous yet socially conscious one-person show\, Lucas Myers weaves together elements of stand-up comedy\, physical theatre\, and his trademark brand of observational humor to tell the story of Dave and Stevie.Dave is a highly successful real estate agent who is living the dream: hot car\, great kids\, beautiful wife\, gorgeous sound system\, designer kitchen. Just as he is about to launch his own self-improvement video series\, #HiMyNameIsDave\, he discovers major issues with his roof and cracks begin to form in his perfect world. Enter Stevie\, a journeyman roofer with aspirations of being a stand-up comic\, who is the only person capable of dealing with Dave’s narcissistic hyper vigilance. As they attempt to collaborate on the roof project\, Stevie forces Dave to confront his shortcomings and come to terms with what being a good person really means. As their initial views of each other are challenged\, ROOF examines our preconceptions around mental health\, addiction\, and homelessness as the characters are forced to confront their own assumptions.Created and performed by Lucas Myers\, the creator of A Beginners Guide to Nelsonia\, CAMPGROUND and DECK.Please note: This performance is not suitable for children. There will be a short pre-show chat\, free naloxone kits will be distributed\, and a counselor will be on location to help anyone who needs to talk. Our co-presenter for the show\, Trail Community Action Team (TCAT)\, works to reduce harm and improve services for people with lived and living experience of drug use in the Lower Columbia. They provide support and advocate to all levels of government to reform drug policy to end the loss of lives caused by the current toxic drug supply.Audience Response“Sometimes life lessons come from the most unexpected places. Who would have thought a one man comedy show could make your eyes well up with tears. I am inspired to be a better “good human” thanks to your amazing show!”“What a great show! I am in awe about how you have created a totally fresh new piece. This one is so important and SO funny and so true. You have done such a great job reflecting our social isolation to us while the act of watching this show with others makes you feel connected. Bravo!”“Bravo for ROOF. SUMMARY:Ballet Kelowna: taqəš and Other Works - Performing Arts Trail
DESCRIPTION:The Performing Arts Trail series\, presented by Trail & District Arts Council\, brings you Ballet Kelowna’s taqəš and Other Works. The “taqəš and Other Works” program features a stunning line-up of signature works from Ballet Kelowna’s contemporary ballet repertoire. With John Alleyne’s methodically harmonized Split House Geometric\, Guillaume Côté’s riveting Bolero\, and Cameron Fraser-Monroe’s powerful and compelling taqəš\, this dynamic program promises to captivate audiences.John Alleyne’s “Split House Geometric” (1989-1990) is a neoclassical piece danced to live violin and piano where poetic moments of pure contemporary ballet are juxtaposed with staccato movements\, with bodies creating geometric shapes to brilliant effect. First created for The National Ballet of Canada\, this vigorous\, precision-perfect work is set to Arvo Pärt’s Fratres.Next\, National Ballet of Canada Choreographic Associate Guillaume Côté brings strength and fragility to a fascinating interpretation of the beloved “Bolero” by Maurice Ravel featuring 5 dancers. One of music’s most famous and identifiable melodies\, Bolero (2012) features breath-taking lifts and virtuosic choreography. \nA “…riveting tour de force.” – Dance Magazine \nWatch the Bolero trailer: https://vimeo.com/583541643Rounding out the program is “taqəš” (2021)\, which means “to return something” in Ayajuthem\, the language belonging to the Homalco\, Klahoose\, K’omoks and Tla’amin Nations. Visionary choreographer Cameron Fraser-Monroe brings his classical ballet training\, knowledge of traditional Coast Salish\, Grass\, Hoop Dance\, and experience as a contemporary dancer to this poignant piece for 8 dancers. Set to songs by Polaris Prize-winning composer and singer Jeremy Dutcher\, taqəš follows the traditional story “Raven Returns the Water”\, centred around Raven (P̓oho) and Frog (Walθ). \nWatch the taqəš trailer at https://vimeo.com/617188774 \nThere will be a pre-show talk with taqəš choreographer Cameron Fraser-Monroe. \n“It is very important that First Nations Peoples tell our own stories\,” says Fraser-Monroe\, a member of the Tla’amin First Nation in Powell River\, BC.taqəš and Other Works is a dynamic program that promises to captivate audiences. \nShow length: 45 minutes with 15 minute pre-show talk.Individual Adult Ticket: $30.00\, except Shane Koyczan which is $35.PLUS:• the bargain price of $10 for anyone under 30 years old• 2 for 1 for hospital / medical employees for all Performing Arts Trail shows.• New attendees 2 for 1: Bring someone who hasn’t been to the theatre before and get 2 for 1 for all Performing Arts Trail shows. SUMMARY:Oktopus: Performing Arts Trail
DESCRIPTION:The Performing Arts Trail series\, presented by Trail & District Arts Council\, brings you Oktopus.Based in Quebec\, Oktopus is a major presence on the Canadian world music scene\, with over 250 performances to its credit at home and abroad. The octet is primarily devoted to klezmer—the musical heritage of Eastern European Jews—distinguished by a novel approach that incorporates various components of the classical and Quebecois repertoire\, with some jazz and Balkan accents. The group’s eight virtuoso musicians offer festive\, high-energy performances\, at once melancholic and profound\, sprinkled with humour and spiced with narrative\, in which original compositions and finely crafted arrangements combine with improvisation. Its members’ complicity\, shared passion\, and hard work are what makes each of their performances so memorable\, Oktopus is simply… ‘spectentacular’!Oktopus’ distinctive music is undeniably rooted in the klezmer tradition\, reflecting the rich history of a thousand-year-old community\, its persecutions and celebrations\, tears and laughter\, or both at the same time. The members of Oktopus are inspired by the music they hear throughout their own travels. Thus\, the melodies of several classical composers\, such as Bartók\, Brahms\, Prokofiev or Enescu are rearranged by the octet\, particularly their works derived from folk themes. Quebec songwriters are also sources of inspiration\, with Leclerc and Vigneault being added to the group’s repertoire. To hear and see more visit their website at https://www.oktopus.ca.MUSICIANS● Gabriel Paquin-Buki – clarinet\, composition and arrangements● Veronica Ungureanu– violin● Noémie Caron-Marcotte – flute● Matthieu Bourget – bass trombone● Madeleine Doyon – tenor trombone● Guillaume Martineau – piano● Maxime Philippe – drums and percussions● Francis Pigeon – trumpetAWARDS● 2021 – Nominee Canadian Folk Music Award● 2021 – Nominee Opus Award● 2021 – « Special prize for the most creative fusion of ancient and contemporary music traditions » awarded by the Slovak Radio Bratislava● 2018 – Nominee Canadian Folk Music Award● 2018 – Nominee Juno Award● Grand gagnant de la 8me édition du concours les syli d’or de la musique du monde2 x 40 min sets + intermission5 Show Series Pass: $123Individual Adult Ticket: $30.00\, except Shane Koyczan which is $35.PLUS:• the bargain price of $10 for anyone under 30 years old• 2 for 1 for hospital / medical employees for all Performing Arts Trail shows.• New attendees 2 for 1: Bring someone who hasn’t been to the theatre before and get 2 for 1 for all Performing Arts Trail shows. SUMMARY:Oktopus
DESCRIPTION:Oktopus is a major presence on the Canadian world music scene\, with over 250 performances to its credit at home and abroad. \nThe group is primarily devoted to klezmer distinguished by a novel approach that incorporates various components of the classical and Quebecois repertoire\, with some jazz and Balkan accents. \nThe eight virtuoso musicians offer festive\, high-energy performances\, at once melancholic and profound\, sprinkled with humour and spiced with narrative\, in which original compositions and finely crafted arrangements combine with improvisation. Its members’ complicity\, shared passion\, and hard work are what makes each of their performances so memorable—whetheron stage\, in the street\, on a ship\, in a hot air balloon or in your living room\, Oktopus is simply…spectentacular!

SUMMARY:Sitka String Quartet coming to Rossland!
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Rossland Miners Hall on Friday\, February 24th for the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture presentation of: Sitka String Quartet! We hate to end our Performance Series season but at least we get the pleasure of welcoming this talented group of women to the stage.Sitka String Quartet was formed by friends and colleagues in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. After years of playing together in the larger ensemble\, and sharing numerous concerts as chamber musicians within the VSO Chamber Players\, it was a natural extension of their like-minded musical curiosity\, open-heartedness\, and a fearless willingness to explore quartet repertoire across many genres that propelled these four musicians to form a professional quartet. They have enjoyed shared and individual performances in Italy\, France\, Germany\, Denmark\, Poland\, Austria\, Japan\, China\, Korea\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, and Australia. Their affection for British Columbia has kept them living within a few kilometres of one another\, and they are proud to perform in their home\, BC\, whenever the opportunity arises. Memorable live performances within the last ten months include an outdoor performance on Grouse Mountain near Vancouver\, and performances at the Firehall Theatre\, and High Beams Dreams in Gibsons\, BC.Help us welcome Cassandra Bequary\, Karen Gerbrecht\, Emilie Grimes\, and Olivia Blander as Sitka String Quartet! One thousand thank-you’s to our generous sponsors this season including Teck Trail Operations Ltd\, ITS Consulting\, the City of Rossland\, the BC Touring Council\, the BC Arts Council and the Province of British Columbia. For more information please contact: performance.rcac@gmail.comSee you at the Miners Hall!Sitka String Quartet (Music- String Quartet)90 minute performance; two 45 minute sets with intermissionFebruary 24\, 2023\, 7:30PMDoors open at 7pmMiners Hall\, 1765 Columbia Ave\, Rossland$25/ticket
