DESCRIPTION:Muriel Griffiths Room at The Bailey TheatreNo Charge Event – tickets NOT required.Trail Arts Council is proud to present “Geography of Memory – Book launch\, discussion and film screenings”.Join Shelly Boyd\, Snayackstx (Sinixt) Cultural Facilitator and Eileen Delehanty Pearkes for lively discussion and readings from the 20th-anniversary edition of The Geography of Memory.This updated volume about the Snayackstx (Sinixt) First People of southeastern British Columbia includes the voices of many contemporary Sinixt people\, expanded maps/illustrations/photographs\, an inside view of the landmark Supreme Court of Canada decision\, R. v. Desautel\, and new details about tribal effort to re-introduce ocean salmon to the upper Columbia River region.The book charts a hopeful\, positive path as the formerly “extinct” tribe embarks on reclaiming its cultural\, natural and spiritual history in Canada. In characteristically gracious prose\, Pearkes identifies the enduring human qualities of persistence\, healing and renewal in this important story that carves a path of truth across the region’s complex\, transboundary landscape.Also part of the evening are two short film screenings. Washed Away- Stories of Displacement on the Columbia River is a short film by Agathe Bernard in collaboration with Revelstoke Museum and Archives. The film dives beneath the surface to explore the impacts of the Columbia River Treaty on the valley south of Revelstoke. DESCRIPTION:We’ll capture the fall colours at Cottonwood Falls! This location has many possibilities with the waterfall and creek\, beautiful maple trees\, and gardens and sculptures.Participants are invited to start with a warm-up exercise of 3 small sketches/studies\, spending no more than 10 minutes on each one. Then take your favourite study and spend the next hour developing it further.2:00-2:30 – Small\, quick studies2:30-3:30 – Focused hour of painting/sketching3:30-4:00 – Regroup and share workEveryone is welcome! Bring your own art supplies and ideas – there is no instruction at these events. We just gather together and all learn a bit from each other.

SUMMARY:Unfurl Your Wings
DESCRIPTION:“UNFURL YOUR WINGS” AT THE KOOTENAY RIVER AUDITORIUM OCT. 23Join three American/Canadian choirs in a choral theater performance encouraging us all to “Unfurl our Wings”.  Songs\, photography\, artwork\, and poetry combine to celebrate freedom\, feathers\, and flight.  Performances are Fri. Oct. 21 at 7 pm at the Pearl Theater on Ash Street in Bonners Ferry\, Sat. Oct. 22 at 2 pm also at the Pearl Theater\, and Sun. Oct. 23 at 2 pm at the Kootenay River Auditorium at the secondary school in Creston\, B.C.  Tickets are $12 US or $15 CA at the door.The three choirs include SPIRITSONG women’s ensemble\, and the BOUNDLESS men’s and women’s ensembles. All three are conducted by Vicki Blake Thompson from Bonners Ferry and accompanied by Monte Anderson and Lorraine Smith\, both from Creston. Members of all three ensembles have performed in many international choral festivals with Vicki Blake Thompson\, including among others\, Iceland\, Greece\, Tanzania\, Costa Rica\, Ireland\, Austria\, and China. BOUNDLESS also performed in Carnegie Hall in NY with other international choirs. Their next festival tour is being planned for Cuba in Nov. of 2023.The music includes both popular tunes like “Blackbird”\,  “Defying Gravity” from the musical “Wicked”\, “The Wind Beneath my Wings”\,  and “Do You Hear the People Sing?” from “Les Miserables” as well as contemporary choral works like “Fly to Paradise” by Eric Whitacre\, “Lark Ascending” by Linda Spevacek\, and two works by Canadian composer Sarah Quartel.The artwork\, poetry\, and photography amplify the lyrics of the songs and tie the program together into a theatrical experience. It is created to take the audience on a journey and inspire us all to find the freedom needed to “Unfurl our Wings”.

Inspired by traditional West African oral culture and dance\, alongside Contemporary and Modern dance styles\, Shayna Jones is a force on stage.Grandmama Speak is a kaleidoscope of Afro-centric folklore and fact\, old wives tales and history. With song\, rhythm and fine movement infused throughout the telling\, Shayna mesmerizes her listeners with tale upon interlocking tale pieced together from the diverse traditions of the African Diaspora. Love and loss\, pride and pain\, hambones and redfish take center stage in a show packed with bold vocal and physical dynamism.
