SUMMARY:"Vessels for Spheres" by Rob Toller
DESCRIPTION:THE ART OF HONOURING THE BEAUTY OF NATURE\n“Vessels for Spheres” \nUsing found objects\, mostly natural forms discovered during his wanderings\, Kimberley-based sculptor extraordinaire Rob Toller has created a collection of small sculptures that honour the exquisite beauty of nature. Rob is excited to announce his upcoming solo art exhibit “Vessels for Spheres”\, open to inspire visitors at Art Gallery Kimberley in BC’s Best Small Town from April 4-14\, 2014. \nThrough his intentional wanderings in the natural world\, Rob draws inspiration from the fascinating surfaces and lines provided by nature. His approach to working with found objects is focused on honouring and highlighting their intrinsic beauty\, with little alteration or imposition. Rob explains\, “I’m drawn to raw\, organic textures and surfaces\, and I’m a big fan of rust. I often incorporate natural elements like wood and stone into my metal sculptures. The balance and rhythm of natural forms guide my art\, allowing the materials to speak for themselves.“ Ultimately\, Rob’s artworks serve as a showcase of the beauty of the natural world as its own sculpture gallery\, filled with endless inspiration. \nRob’s creative journey began in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies where\, according to Rob\, “Regular explorations of the front ranges in all seasons led to the discovery of spectacular root structures\, weathered by years in the elements – chinook winds\, fire and weather extremes.” Recognising the necessity to elevate these natural sculptures with complementary bases so they can be presented and fully appreciated\, Rob took up welding and blacksmithing\, attracted by metal’s strength and contrasting properties. As a self-taught artist fuelled by curiosity\, Rob increasingly gravitated towards working with metal and became intrigued by the possibilities of this medium. Amassing an eclectic collection of found metal objects\, he creates one-of-a-kind figurative sculptures while preserving the natural patina of these objects as a historical record of their life. “The long history of mining and forestry in The Kootenays provides for a wide variety of materials to be gathered; industrial salvage scattered in many unexpected places\, hidden and sometimes buried treasures”\, Rob reflects. \nRob’s biggest challenge often lies in safely harvesting and transporting these pieces back to his studio. You may happen upon him in the early morning hours\, walking remote trails while lugging unwieldy pieces of wood\, steel or stone. The discovery of new materials and shapes serves as a catalyst for his creative exploration. Rob is drawn to adventure both in the natural world and the realm of creativity\, always wondering “What if I …?” \nWithin this exhibit\, Rob joins together his enjoyment in the creative process with his love for nature. By incorporating spherical shapes\, such as stones and steel balls\, Rob introduces contrast\, while alluding to the start of spring and new life. His return to using pewter adds a dynamic element\, creating unique forms with each casting. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to surround yourself with the beauty of Rob’s sculptures — a heartfelt celebration of the natural world and the creative process. Please join us at Art Gallery Kimberley from April 4-14\, 2024. Rob’s exhibit welcomes visitors from Thursday to Sunday\, 9:30 until 4:30 and from Monday to Wednesday by appointment. Everyone is invited to the closing reception and artist talk on Sunday\, April 14\, 2024 from 3 to 5 pm.

SUMMARY:Mini Sculptural Vases with Becky
DESCRIPTION:Our instructor Becky is a student at Glasgow school of the arts in Scotland. She has years of experience moulding\, casting and working with clay. She is excited to share her knowledge with you! \nIn this fun introductory session into hand building clay\, guided by Becky\, you’ll get to create your very own mini sculptural vase. \nVases will be fired with white or clear glaze\, and participants will be notified via email once their pieces are ready. Wait period is usually 8 weeks. \nCost is $55 and includes materials. \nWhat is handbuilding? \nHandbuilding is a ceramics technique that allows you to create forms with clay and your hands\, without using a throwing wheel. Before ceramicists invented the wheel\, handbuilding was the only way they could create functional and artistic ceramic forms. There are 3 main handbuilding pottery techniques of pinching\, coiling\, and slab rolling. All you need to get started are your clay\, your hands\, and a few simple tools. \nWhile handbuilding is as simple as using your hands to form an object out of clay\, it encompasses three main techniques and forming methods. Once you have mastered pinching\, coiling\, and slab building\, you can make just about anything out of clay. \nPre registration is required.

SUMMARY:THE PORCH HOUNDS w/ PETER REED DOUBLE ALBUM RELEASE
DESCRIPTION:THE PORCH HOUNDS\nBorn on the wide-open Canadian prairies\, The Porch Hounds are the brainchild of singer/songwriter Nik Winnitowy. Gaining traction as a honky-tonk cover band in the small mountain town of Revelstoke\, the project has morphed into a country and rockinspired Canadiana outfit. With all parts and instruments written\, recorded\, and engineered by frontman Nik\, the songs blend the raw energy of rock with the soulful storytelling of folk with a twang of classic country. Tales of love\, loss\, and alcohol\, along with the timeless allure of the wide-open road\, draw listeners into a world of rustic charm and heartfelt emotion.

SUMMARY:The Porch Hounds w/ Peter Reed
DESCRIPTION:Not – Not a ski season wind up party? \nJoin us in taking in The Porch Hounds with special guest\, Peter Reed and celebrate a couple of new record releases from them\, as well as raising a glass to the ski season\, and the new spring season now upon us! \nThe Porch Hounds: \nBorn on the wide-open Canadian prairies\, The Porch Hounds are the brainchild of singer/songwriter Nik Winnitowy. \nGaining traction as a honky-tonk cover band in the small mountain town of Revelstoke\, the project has morphed into a country and rockinspired Canadiana outfit. With all parts and instruments written\, recorded\, and engineered by frontman Nik\, the songs blend the raw energy of rock with the soulful storytelling of folk with a twang of classic country. \nTales of love\, loss\, and alcohol\, along with the timeless allure of the wide-open road\, draw listeners into a world of rustic charm and heartfelt emotion. \nSo grab a bottle\, raise it high\, and join The Porch Hounds as they blaze a trail through the untamed wilderness of heavy folk-country rock.

SUMMARY:Daniel Champagne in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Here’s a heads-up for an upcoming concert with astonishing popularity: before any publicity had gone out\, word got around that celebrated Australian musician Daniel Champagne was coming to Taghum Hall on April 10—and the event has almost sold out! So he’s added a second concert on April 9 at 7:30pm. Beloved in his home country\, he is no stranger to Canada: “The word Prodigy seems to entirely fall short of this soft-spoken young man’s skills he coaxes sounds and melodies out of his instrument that literally drop jaws\,” wrote the Calgary Herald. Tickets are available at Taghumhall.ca and at Eddy Music and Taghum Shell.
