SUMMARY:Begonia
DESCRIPTION:Begonia’s Alexa Dirks has never been able to fit into the box of being a “conventional woman”. “I’m loud\, I’m awkward and I’ve always taken up space. I’ve done things my whole life that some people would tell me weren’t appropriate ‘for a girl’.” That narrative that once tore Dirks down is now what empowers her to take charge of her own story\, in her own way.The Winnipeg-based Dirks is a Juno Award winner with her former group Chic Gamine. While she thrived off of the collaboration\, once the band broke up she knew she was ready to go solo. Even though she was terrified to go out on her own\, that feeling was a fundamental factor to positively reinforce that the path she was on was the correct one. As Begonia\, Dirks is bold\, brazen with her florid\, surprising pop that is tempered with sensitivity and wisdom. Dirks’ first solo output with her 2017 debut EP\, Lady in Mind\, was well-received\, being listed on NPR’s 10 Artists You Need To Know in 2017 and “Juniper” reached #1 on the CBC Music Charts in 2017. Noisey wrote that\, “Begonia has one of Canada’s most extraordinary voices\, and thankfully she uses it to obliterate the misery from this world one live performance at a time.” NPR wrote that Begonia is “the place where where synth-pop meets old soul and scrappy meets sexy.”Begonia’s songwriting style is largely autobiographical. “There’s always some element of me in these songs whether I like it or not\,” she says bluntly. She gets to the heart of her subject matter\, whether it’s learning to come into her own or confronting and processing a brutal heartbreak. Dirks’ intimate lyrics and audacious pop style sound allows for her audience to relate to the messiness of life with an honesty that is refreshing. With Begonia’s debut full length album entitled ‘Fear’ expected next year\, Dirks’ leans hard into a sense of arrival. Dirks wrote and co-produced the record with a familiar team: Matt Schellenberg and Matt Petters of Royal Canoe\, along with Marcus Paquin\, who has previously worked with The National\, Stars\, Arcade Fire\, Local Natives\, to name a few.Begonia forms a special kind of musical translucence. A transparency of learning to unlearn some of the parts Dirks didn’t care to have\, the ones she wanted to hold onto and nourish\, and how that relationship can inform her music. On her latest single “The Light\,” Dirks sings over soulful swells\, her vocals curving around the notes of the song and making them explode as she bluntly tells us “hang up the phone and scream your name/ again\, again/but I like the pain.” Who among us hasn’t wanted to rage and yell and yet curl into and find comfort in the things that brought us pain? Begonia explores the nuances of such heartfelt emotional experiences.Looking back doesn’t often mean regret or remorse; mourning the version of you that’s no longer there. It may mean paying tribute to the mistakes\, failures\, and triumphs. Begonia is a celebration for the arrival of the person Dirks has become both personally and professionally; showing that some things can’t be contained\, no matter how much\, and that fundamentally they shouldn’t be either. This show is also one of our ENHANCED EXPERIENCES!Here is your chance to get creative with the option to dress up with a botanical accent for this show. Floral tie\, daisy print dress\, garden-themed shirt\, rose-coloured glasses: Wear your favourite flower-inspired outfit to BEGONIA! Prizes from local businesses for the best 3 costumes of the night.

SUMMARY:Candy Bones Theatre: Ideas Bobert
DESCRIPTION:From award winning creator Candice Roberts comes the heart fluttering physical comedy Ideas Bobert. Bobert is a silent character\, a la Charlie Chaplin\, who has a little red bird for a heart. His story asks us\, what happens if we are to deny our deepest dreams and desires? Teetering on the brink of absolute failure\, love-sick Bobert discovers his heart to be more important than he knew. With vintage silent film styling\, shadow puppetry\, stop motion animation projections\, tap dance and vintage music\, the world of Ideas Bobert is rich with magic and creativity. Filled with preposterous situations and dreamy surrealism\, the show is like Ginger Rogers meets Mr. Bean on the Muppet show\, as Ideas Bobert dances with the hilarious and absurd.“Charming and skillfully performed. Putting Ideas Bobert on your list would be a good idea!” ★★★★ –CBC“Ideas Bobert is a leap into a silent-movie that you will be very reluctant to ever leave. Heartwarming and hilarious\, inventive and inspiring. Truly the kind of theatre magic you can never plan for but only hope for\, and will leave you with your eyes popping and your heart flying high.”– Kevin Reid\, The VisitoriumWatch the trailer https://youtu.be/CsEKPpUnVXE.Learn more about Candy Bones (Candice Roberts) here https://candy-bones.com.Ideas Bobert is whimsy and fiction\, but for its creator Candice Roberts\, it resonates with her truth. Common amongst many comedy artists\, Candice has struggled with anxiety and depression. She claims that clown school saved her life. For her\, the art of clowning encompasses such fundamental life-skills as connection with oneself and community\, creative communication and of becoming comfortable in the discomfort that is the unknown.Clowning for her celebrates the multi-facets of what it means to be human. It is the investigation of what is absurd or confounding about ourselves and society. It is the sharing of vulnerability and honesty and the dissolving of shame through exposure. Through Ideas Bobert\, she hopes to inspire a deep belly laugh\, a tender tear and a reminder of how important it is to listen with our hearts and to be in touch with our creative selves.Candy Bones Theatre has toured all over North American with her award winning solo shows. She specializes in original immersive theatrical productions and creativity education. She brings her passion for interweaving artistic disciplines such as physical theatre\, music\, mask\, puppetry\, clown and dance to create stories that explore the humour\, the heartbreak\, the trials and the tribulations of being a human in this world. This is a 45-minute family show best suited to kids 4-11 years of age and their families. SUMMARY:REVY.Live | Begonia
Noisey wrote that\, “Begonia has one of Canada’s most extraordinary voices\, and thankfully she uses it to obliterate the misery from this world one live performance at a time.”

SUMMARY:A Play on Birds Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Don Konrad considers himself a cartoonist at heart. He’s been sketching and painting since elementary school\, taking his inspiration from nature\, people and his life experiences. Birders and art-lovers alike will enjoy Konrad’s whimsical bird artwork now on display at the Nelson Public Library. \n  \nAfter many decades of creating art\, Don Konrad still has a sense of wonder about the power of imagination in creating images. “I’ve always been fascinated and amused by the thought that they come out of the end of a pencil\, pen or brush\, if you let it”\, says Don. “Creating the birds as caricatures was fun\, but the challenge was giving each one its own personality.” \n  \nThe illustrations are rendered in casein\, an opaque medium\, and traditional watercolours. They were originally created as part of a collaborative book project\, A Play on Birds\, between Don Konrad and his daughter Erica Konrad. After the illustrations were created\, Erica provided the corresponding text for the book\, like a field guide\, but for imaginary birds. “Whether it’s in the name of the bird itself or truths hidden in the description\, these birds harbour secrets on how they connect to other real-world birds- a treasure hunt of sorts” says Don. \n  \nDon has exhibited in many Canadian galleries and other public spaces and currently mentors and tutors in watercolour painting at The Narrows Art Retreat in Grohman Narrows. \n  \nThe show continues until the end of December and copies of the book A Play on Birds will be available to purchase at the Nelson Library.

SUMMARY:The Cave
DESCRIPTION:A ragged group of animals flee for their lives and take refuge in a cave. The animals\, through song\, comment on their fate and that of the world. What cased their dire situation? The writing was supported by two themes: The Genesis ‘expulsion from the garden’ story\, and our changing environment. In our complacent greed\, we are ‘evicting’ ourselves and all creatures fro the ‘garden’. The Cave is our way of telling the story of the earth’s precarious survival. The format of the show takes its inspiration from cabaret. The MC\, hilariously played by composer John Millard\, tells jokes and stories and gives political context to the songs. The lyrics are at times comic\, at times tragic. Two songs are in Cree. John’s music is bombastic\, lyrical and moving. The band\, led by music direct\, Gregory Oh\, includes keyboards\, accordion\, reeds\, bass\, banjo\, and percussion. Adam Paolozza\, of Bad New Days renown\, directs. The Cave includes an impressive list of performers\, musicians\, and designers. This show is also one of our ENHANCED EXPERIENCES!Here is your chance to get creative with the option to arrive in costume for this show. Wear your connection to the environment and the natural world to The Cave by dressing as an animal\, plant\, tree\, pebble\, fire\, river… let’s see where your imagination takes you! Prizes from local businesses for the best 3 costumes of the night.

The French illusionist and film director was an inventive pioneer and brilliant entertainer\, whose films such as “A Trip to the Moon’ (1902) and “The Impossible Voyage” (1904) were inspired by the universe of Jules Verne.Méliès built the first movie studio in Europe; was the first to use storyboards and production and was a prolific inventor of special effects including multiple exposures\, dissolves\, time-lapse photography\, and hand painted color. By the time his film making career ended as a result of reversals of fortunes during World War I\, Méliès had created 531 films\, with some of the most memorable images in the history of the cinema.Concept\, musical compositions and sound creation\, keyboard\, strings structure\, melodica\, objects : Jean-François Alcoléa.
