SUMMARY:Trail: Ballet Jörgen\, A Midsummer Night’s Dream
DESCRIPTION:The Trail & District Arts Council presents Canada’s preeminent classical touring ballet company Ballet Jörgen: A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, at The Bailey Theatre on Wednesday\, February 18 at 7:00 pm as part of the Performing Arts Trail series. \nBallet Jörgen presents William Shakespeare’s classic comedy with a Canadian twist. \nWilliam Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of his most beloved comedies. As four Athenians mixed up in love and lost in a forest while trying to escape their families\, a group of fairies\, engaged in their own emotional misunderstandings\, manipulate the humans. \nThe ballet is a lighthearted\, humourous\, and fun tale of love and\, often misguided\, magic set in motion by the mischievous trickster Puck.\nBengt Jörgen will bring this story to life in his own original ballet version as a tribute to Canada’s North. Ballet Jörgen’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream will bring out the magic of Northern Canada’s woodland and tundra landscapes and creatures of the forest such as moose\, beavers\, bears\, and squirrels.\nIn addition to our professional dancers\, each performance will include up to 10 age-appropriate roles for local young aspiring dancers\, ages 9 to 17\, through Ballet Jörgen’s Local Participant Program. \nThe ballet adaptation is set to Mendelssohn’s 1827 concert overture and 1843 instrumental score which includes the famous “Wedding March.”\nThis family-friendly ballet will captivate audiences of all ages and will warm the hearts of young and old alike. \nThe show includes 15-18 dancers including parts for up to 10 local participants.\nChoreography: Bengt Jörgen\, C.M. Music: Felix Mendelssohn \nABOUT BALLET JÖRGEN\nFounded in 1987\, Ballet Jörgen is a national organization headquartered in Toronto that is focused on making the arts accessible for all Canadians\, with a special focus on underserved communities and demographics. Known for the warmth and beauty of its productions\, Ballet Jörgen offers a range of performances\, dance classes and community engagement events involving over 70\,000 participants annually across North America.\nBallet Jörgen is the 2011 winner of The National Arts Centre Award for Distinguished Contribution to Touring. In 2019 Artistic Director & CEO Bengt Jörgen was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada “for his commitment to promoting ballet in Canada as a choreographer and artistic director.” \nSingle tickets are $42. Under 30 years and Community Access Card tickets are $21.\nAll tickets available online at trail-arts.com\, by phone at 250-368-9669\, and in person at the Bailey Box Office at 1501 Cedar Ave.\, Trail. \nThis performance is made possible thanks to our sponsors Century 21 (Kootenay Homes Ltd.\,)\, Pharmasave Trail\, TECK Trail Operations and the support of our funders the BC Arts Council\, BC Live Performance Network\, and the Government of Canada. We also gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia.

SUMMARY:Argenta: Flax to Linen Workshop
DESCRIPTION:  \nExplore the full journey of flax from plant to fibre to linen. \nJoin us for a hands-on workshop that brings the ancient craft of linen-making to life. Participants will learn how flax\, a plant well-suited to our bioregion\, is transformed into soft\, strong raw linen through traditional hand-processing techniques. All flax used in this workshop was grown in our community plot this year! \nYou’ll have the opportunity to try your hand at breaking\, scutching\, and hackling flax\, learn about its cultivation and cultural history in the Kootenays\, and explore how this plant fits into our regional fibre system today. \nThe tools used in these workshops are hand-crafted by local artisan Scott Fettes\, using locally sourced wood and traditional joinery. Their creation was made possible through generous support from Columbia Basin Trust and Kootenay Savings Credit Union\, helping us build a shared legacy of regional flax processing. \nThese workshops are part of our Flax to Linen Program\, a regional initiative connecting communities across the West Kootenays to reimagine the potential of locally grown fibre crops. By learning together\, we’re helping build the foundation for a bioregional linen economy rooted in soil health\, community collaboration\, and regenerative practice. \nNo experience is required. All materials and tools are provided. \nParticipant fees are subsidized thanks to CBT ReDi grants! \nNote: Members receive 10% off all workshops. Look for your discount code in your inbox.\nIf you cannot find it in your inbox or spam folder\, please contact info@westkootenayfibreshed.com

SUMMARY:Trail: Where Have All the Buffalo Gone? by Axis Theatre
DESCRIPTION:The Trail & District Arts Council and Rossland Council for Arts and Culture present Where Have All the Buffalo Gone? by Axis Theatre\, a captivating show for kids in Grade 4 to 12\, their families and the young at heart to enjoy together. The show is on Sunday\, March 1 at 3:00 pm in The Bailey Theatre and is part of the TECK Family Series. \nWhere Have All The Buffalo Gone? is a love-story that transcends time as it follows two souls through seven different periods of Métis history. Filled with stories about the Sun Traveller and the Callihoo family\, the performance is a theatre piece that incorporates fiddle music\, jigging\, and a life-like buffalo puppet. \nInspired by historical events of the Métis people of Canada\, this original play for young audiences explores the loves\, the losses and the fight of Treaty 6’s Métis people – and their love and kinship to the buffalo. \nThe play takes the audience through the emergence of the Métis Nation across the plains\, then leads into the robust colonization that arises from the fur trade\, the disappearance of the buffalo\, as well as the political uprising of the Métis Association of Alberta in the 1930s. The story starts in creation among the stars and ends in 2024. \nWatch the trailer https://vimeo.com/940939867?p=1s \nCREATIVE TEAM – Playwright: Tai Amy Grauman; Director: Amanda Testini; Co-Director & Sound Design: Chris McGregor; Set\, Props & Buffalo Design: Dusty Hagerüd; Costume Design: Alaia Hamer. \nABOUT AXIS THEATRE\nIn the age of “looking down\,” Axis draws young eyes up to engage them in interactive experiences that educate\, inspire\, and transform. Audiences experience smart\, entertaining interpretations of traditional and cutting-edge physical theatre. Axis incorporates combinations of puppetry\, movement\, live music\, red-nose clown\, and improvisation to expand the meaning and impact of the stories presented. It is deceptively simple\, completely fresh\, and memorable.A special thank you to the company’s sponsors: The Downie-Wenjack and Chris Spencer Foundations. \nAxis Theatre is grateful to live\, work\, and play on the unceded\, traditional territories of the Coast Salish peoples – sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xwməθkwəy̓ əm (Musqueam) nations. \nShow 55 minutes with a 15 min Q&A after the show. \nSingle tickets are $18 or get tickets to all 4 Family Series shows for just $60.
