SUMMARY:Andrea Superstein: OH MOTHER
DESCRIPTION:The Jazz at the Griff series\, presented by Trail & District Arts Council\, brings you Andrea Superstein: OH MOTHER in The Bailey Theatre.Andrea Superstein is one of the most versatile vocalists in Canadian music today. Dubbed as “redefining jazz” by the Vancouver Province\, her debut performance at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival earned her a nomination for a Galaxie Rising Star award and launched her squarely into the limelight. Her musical stylings exemplify powerful vocals\, evoking the gentle and the strong\, the light and the dark\, often in the same song\, luring us in deeper with killer improvisational instincts and exceptional storytelling. Superstein has graced multiple official Spotify playlists\, notably #4 on Vocal Jazz\, just ahead of Norah Jones\, received a 5-star review in BBC Music Magazine\, and is a crowd favourite on the touring scene performing at numerous well-known jazz venues and festivals in North America.OH MOTHER is a multimedia tour de force inspired by real life stories of motherhood. Meticulously arranged\, each song beautifully and poignantly evokes a mother’s deep and divergent emotional experience with a truth and sincerity that’s often lacking in today’s music. Layers of rich textures\, powerful vocals\, and heartfelt imagery in breathtaking videos\, enable Superstein to reach new artistic heights. While it focuses on the parental experience\, this free-spirited musical experience is for everyone.Watch the trailer for the show at https://youtu.be/zo7Iy0FbQ8w“She’s a genuine original.” – BBC Music Magazine“Vocal jazz delight. Oozing of swing. Laid back\, dark\, emotional. SUMMARY:Huu Bac Quintet: Performing Arts Trail
DESCRIPTION:The Performing Arts Trail series\, presented by Trail & District Arts Council\, brings you the Huu Bac Quintet.Composer and multi-instrumentalist\, Huu Bac Quach founded his quintet in Montreal in 2013\, skillfully combining his Vietnamese and Chinese heritages to North-American jazz music.Backed by a solid team of some of the most prominent musicians from the Montreal jazz scene\, Huu Bac performs his compositions inspired by his numerous travels in Asia\, Europe and South America.Huu Bac was born in Vietnam from parents of Chinese descent. His family moved to Canada when he was 2. In 2002\, he discovered the beauty of the Vietnamese monochord\, the Dan Bau\, under the guidance of master Pham Duc Thanh. Huu Bac’s intimate contact with afro-Peruvian music and music from the Andes became a source of inspiration in his artistic journey\, and lead him to learn the Andean bamboo flute\, the Quena. From 2009 to 2015\, he collaborated twice with the Cirque du Soleil\, recording for the shows “Totem” and “Toruk”. He also recorded for “Canotgraphie”\, a show by artistic director Robert Lepage. In concert\, Huu Bac charms through the beauty and intensity of his musical pieces as well as through his playing of the dan bau (single chord Vietnamese instrument)\, the erhu (Chinese fiddle)\, the quena (Peruvian flute) and the guitar. He performs his music with his quintet from Montreal: Guillaume Martineau on piano\, Sébastien Pellerin on bass\, Etienne Mason on drums\, and Vanessa Marcoux on violin. SUMMARY:Sors ta langue de ta poche
DESCRIPTION:The West Kootenays Francophone Association (AFKO) is launching a series of free participatory and interdisciplinary art events addressing the theme of linguistic insecurity. A playback theatre troupe will be performing stories of the audience while a local visual artist Melanie Boothe will create a live painting inspired by the conversation between the audience and the actors.Playback theatre is a form of art that invites audience members to tell a “slice of life” story\, which is then retold on stage. What is linguistic insecurity? It manifests itself as a feeling of discomfort in speaking a language because of the fear of being judged for the way one expresses oneself.

SUMMARY:Sansei: The Storyteller and Yamabiko Taiko Drummers: Performing Arts Trail
DESCRIPTION:The Performing Arts Trail series\, presented by Trail & District Arts Council\, brings you Sansei: The Storyteller. Written and Performed by Kunji Ikeda. Produced by Cloudsway Dance Theatre. It may seem as though a light-hearted look at the Japanese Internment isn’t possible until you hear Kunji Ikeda say\, “If the Japanese Internment of WWII didn’t happen\, I wouldn’t be alive.”Sansei: The Storyteller uses dance\, theatre\, and humour to tell the story of one of Canada’s darkest decisions and how the rampant racism of past generations affected the Japanese community today.Kunji Ikeda investigates the social climates and hardships that affected the Ikeda family after they were labeled enemy aliens after the December 7\, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor triggered the internment and dispossession of tens of thousands of Japanese-Canadians.In a tale that is both illuminating and profoundly personal\, Sansei: The Storyteller weaves together dance\, narrative\, historical audio\, and recorded family recollections in a moving work that CBC hailed as both “timely” and “uniquely beautiful.”Ikeda conveys his grandparents’ emigration from Japan to British Columbia\, where his grandfather was a successful fisherman in Steveston\, B.C. Then\, in vivid contrast\, his stories follow his family’s incarceration as his grandmother\, father and uncle were held at Rosebery\, an internment camp outside New Denver\, while his grandfather was sent to live and work in a road camp to build the Hope-Princeton Highway. With compassion and unexpected humour\, Kunji Mark Ikeda shares his discovery of where he came from\, how his family navigated their histories\, and how the rampant racism of past generations has affected the Japanese community today. The silver lining? If not for the internment\, Ikeda wouldn’t be here to tell this story today…Created and performed by Kunji Ikeda.Creator/performer Ikeda “dances and says more with the movement of his fingers than many actors do with reams of dialogue” (Calgary Herald). The artistic director of Calgary’s Cloudsway Dance Theatre\, Ikeda’s moving multi-disciplinary works inventively combine story\, imagination\, and choreography.Watch the trailer at https://youtu.be/tJBU7pDNEKs.“A tale of profound historical impact. Sansei is storytelling at it’s finest; sophisticated\, meaningful\, moving\, and humorous.” – Laurie Fife\, Ottawa Storytellers Society“He’s a terrific stage presence… a natural-born storyteller. The agony and ambiguity of the Japanese Internment comes out as much in his dance as it does in his words.” – Stephen Hunt\, Calgary HeraldAwards:Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama (Nominated) – Betty Mitchell Award 2019Outstanding Choreography (Nominated) – Betty Mitchell Award 2019Best Solo Performance (Nominated) – Calgary Critter Awards 2015Best of Fest (Winner) – Calgary International Fringe Festival 2014The Yamabiko Taiko drummers will close out the evening with their high energy performance!
