SUMMARY:The Witness Blanket
DESCRIPTION:Seemingly disconnected remnants of clothing\, crumbling buildings\, and fragmented cultures are woven together into a blanket\, designed to shine light on the Indian Residential School system that connects them\, and stand as a monument to the resiliency and strength of those who survived them.  \nThe Nelson Museum\, Archives & Gallery (NMAG) is honoured to exhibit a replicated portion of The Witness Blanket in the summer of 2024\, on tour from the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg\, Manitoba. Inspired by a woven blanket\, Witness Blanket is a large-scale work of art created by master carver Carey Newman\, containing hundreds of items reclaimed from residential schools\, churches\, government buildings\, and traditional and cultural structures from across Canada.   \nThe Witness Blanket is on display from August 10 to September 20\, 2024.

SUMMARY:SPACE QUEEN\, WE ARE NOT A CULT\, JAYNE KARMA LAMO
DESCRIPTION:Space Queen is a heavy rock power trio comprised of Jenna Earle (guitar/vocals)\, Seah Maister (bass/keys/vocals) and Karli MacIntosh (drums/vocals) Space Queen takes the trio’s signature haunting vocal harmonies and sends them soaring over a cosmic canvas of neo-psychedelic rock. Driving beats from MacIntosh provide an anchor for Earle’s heavy distortion and 70s-style riffs\, while Maister keeps everything grounded on fuzzed-out\, gnarly bass. \nWe Are Not A Cult are a punk rock band from Penticton\, Canada. Formed in 2022 by a group of bored professionals that spent years making music and found a way to combine into something better than the sum of its parts. Their unique brand of punk rock hits on skate punk\, hardcore\, rock\, and any other genre they can blend in to keep themselves entertained. \nJayne Karma Lamo is a neurodivergent multi-instrumentalist\, performer\, recording artist and producer from Salmo\, BC. Jayne creates dreamy\, post-grunge alt-rock\, drawing from multiple self produced albums worth of original material. Her signature sound has been influenced by the likes of PJ Harvey\, Radiohead\, the Dandy Warhols\, among many others.

SUMMARY:SUMMER KICKS: KIRAN AHLUWALIA WITH OLIVIA ROSE
DESCRIPTION:Born in India\, raised in Canada\, and currently based in New York City\, the sublimely talented vocalist and composer Kirin Ahluwalia is the poster child for musical multiculturalism. With two JUNOs to her credit\, Kiran has always been celebrated as a master of the profound vocal traditions of India and Pakistan (DownBeat praises the “emotional richness” of her singing). Yet these are traditions that she simultaneously honours but also updates in remarkable ways. \nHer original compositions\, while intensely Indian\, have also been influenced by Kiran’s deep delving into the realms of jazz\, western blues\, soul\, and rock\, and especially the haunting trance blues of Mali. Over her storied career she has also had memorable collaborations with everyone from fado legends to superstar Celtic fiddler Natalie MacMaster. Appearing with a quintet featuring renowned jazz artist Rez Abbasi on guitar and similarly skilled performers on drums\, tabla\, and accordion/organ\, the boundary-blurring Kiran will take the audience on a unique and enchanting musical journey.

SUMMARY:Art On Ninth Artist Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Dive into the wonder of watercolours in this comprehensive and immersive weekend retreat led by Calgary artist and art educator\, Stephen Dozois! \nPerfect for new painters and well seasoned artists alike\, this retreat offers two days of concentrated instruction and hands-on practice\, allowing for focus\, skill development\, and the exploration of new techniques. \nStephen has designed his retreat to be stimulating\, challenging\, innovative and fun\, offering a deep exploration of various watercolour techniques in a supportive and nurturing environment where artists are encouraged to experiment\, take risks and learn new methods. \nHere’s what’s in store. \nDay 1:\nOpening Reception and Artist’s Demo at Art on 9th \nDay 2:\nMastering the Basics \nThe weekend kicks off with a focus on the foundations of watercolour painting starting with a quick demo of stretching watercolour paper and emphasizing its importance. Stephen will then dive into fundamental topics such as drawing techniques\, composition principles and selecting a subject. He will then move onto the steps it takes to realize a watercolour painting from start to finish. It’s a comprehensive start that covers all the essentials for creating captivating and well-structured works of art. \nPlay with Paint \nThen it’s time to have some fun playing with paint\, as Stephen covers several techniques including wet on wet\, wet on dry\, dry brush\, fun ways to use masking fluid\, colour mixing\, brush handling\, using alcohol\, wax\, salt\, watercolour pencils\, ink pens and so much more! \nThroughout the day\, you’ll work on two or three paintings\, drawing inspiration from provided references or\, weather permitting\, venturing outdoors for some plein air painting. \nAnd rest assured\, one-on-one feedback\, guidance\, and coaching will be provided every step of the way\, ensuring a supportive and encouraging environment for all. \nDay 3\nThe Real Fun Begins! \nWe will be trying a unique form of watercolour you are sure to love – Watercolour Batik. Using Ginwashi rice paper and heated wax as a resist (paper and wax supplied)\, this technique encourages creativity\, experimentation and innovation. Watercolour Batik is a unique\, vibrant fusion of artistic traditions\, bridging a gap between Eastern and Western artistic techniques. Enabling the artist to explore new ways of expression and push the boundaries of traditional watercolour painting methods. \nThrough hands-on demonstrations and individualized instruction\, you’ll discover these new techniques\, resulting in art that is truly one-of-a-kind. \nDon’t Miss this Incredible Opportunity to Develop Your Talent \nJoin us for Creative Splash – a weekend of exploration\, learning\, and creative growth. Whether you’re a beginner looking to build a solid foundation or an experienced painter eager to expand your skills\, this workshop promises to be a fun and enriching experience.
