SUMMARY:Base to Peak: Making Mountain Films
DESCRIPTION:2025 Momentum Masterclass Workshop \n\n Base to Peak Making Mountain Film Workshop with Trixie Pacis\n\nWHEN: Saturday January 11 2024\, 11am – 1pm PST\n\nWHERE: The Shoebox Theatre (225 Hall St\, Nelson\, BC V1L 5X4)\n\nCOST:$30 for general$25 for Kootenay Screen Based Industry Workers members$20 for studentsEmail lynn@kootenayfilm.com to sign up\n\nWHAT YOU’LL LEARN:Making mountain films is much like the adventures we embark upon outdoors. We begin at the base with a broad idea and work our way to the top\, refining our concept until we reach the peak\, where we have the opportunity to share what we’ve made with the world.\n\nFilmmaker Trixie Pacis shares her journey and recent experiences producing/directing her first three short outdoor documentary films — from developing stories (the base) to distributing them on the mountain festival circuit (the peak).\nThe second half of the workshop will transition into a free-flowing group discussion. Participants will have an opportunity to ask Trixie anything about her experience (particularly with story development\, production\, direction\, or festival distribution). More than just a Q&A\, participants are encouraged to engage in conversation about their own projects by pitching ideas\, asking for input\, and exploring actionable next steps.\n\nStick around after from 1:30-3:30pm for the January 2025 KSBI Meetup and watch Trixie’s short docs Wild Aerial (16m) and Wildflowers (37m)\, followed by a Q+A and networking.\n\nABOUT TRIXIE PACIS:Trixie Pacis is a filmmaker\, photographer\, and writer based in Kimberley\, British Columbia\, focusing on documenting unheard personal and environmental stories. Her documentary films\, Wildflowers and Wild Aerial\, are set to premiere at the 2024 Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival\, while her third film\, Ahon\, will debut at the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival in February 2025.\n\nWith over a decade of experience\, Trixie has worked with various media outlets\, including Los Angeles Magazine and Drive Films\, before transitioning to a freelance career. She has collaborated with global clients\, from film producers to travel agencies.\nAs the Director of Acquisitions and Programming for ChimeTV\, America’s first Asian American and Pacific Islander cable channel\, she promotes AAPI culture and representation. In recognition of her contributions\, she received L.A. TV Week’s 40 Under 40 Award in 2023. Trixie’s screenplay\, Vile & Sweet\, won Best Ghost Story at Horror Fest International in 2020\, and she participated in the Banff Centre Adventure Filmmakers’ Workshop in 2021.

SUMMARY:Southern Interior Season One Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a celebration and showing of SOUTHERN INTERIOR\, a 6-episode sketch comedy series that’s not just about Nelson – it is Nelson. \nPicture this: your downtown tour guides are a pair of goats (who may or may not be hallucinations)\, you’re starving but the farmer’s market only sells pottery\, and the redneck bachelor party you crash morphs into a rebirthing ceremony. \nCreated by Amy Bohigian\, produced by Gregory MacKenzie\, starring Lucas Myers\, Michelle Hart\, Lynne Karey-McKenna and Jonathan Ramos\, and featuring a 100% local cast and crew\, this show isn’t about outsiders looking in\, it’s a community turning the camera on itself\, reflecting back both satire and sincerity. \nThe Bell Fund\, Creative BC and Shaftesbury Media have all backed this professional production\, recognizing the universal appeal in Nelson’s unique story – where outsiders of all stripes have been finding refuge and building community for generations. \nIn an age of commodified authenticity\, SOUTHERN INTERIOR offers something rare: a genuine reflection of a place – this place\, our place – that stubbornly refuses to be anything but itself.

No two seasons are the same\, of course: Further in the Alpine is a continuation of this backcountry hut-keeper’s impressions as she engages with the park’s wild residents\, its visitors\, and her own human vulnerability through words and drawings that offer an intimate glimpse of life in the Alpine. \nShort Film “In your Mind’s Eye”  \nIn 2022 Petra created this 20 minute short film with the subtitle Moods of Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park and it won the first price at the North Valley Mountain Film Festival! Come enjoy this film on a big screen during her book launch. The film was co-created with Whitney Taylor (film) and Sam Harrisson (soundscape & audio) \nIllustrating Workshop for all ages (optional) \nFor those interested\, Petra offers a 1 hr illustrating workshop following her book presentation. SUMMARY:SHADOWPLAY: A Night of Dark Music
DESCRIPTION:Join duo CLOAK & DAGGER and their comrade JAKOB with special guest MRAKI for a spectral second installment of SHADOWPLAY Saturday October 12th at the Oxygen Art Centre. This dark music event takes its name from the iconic track off of Joy Division’s debut album Unknown Pleasures. The band’s intervention in 1979 was a game changer that inspired many genres of unique auditory exploration\, such as darkwave\, EBM\, industrial\, new wave\, post-punk\, and gothic rock. The night will feature vintage and contemporary releases from a variety of these mesmerizing and mysterious musical genres.

SUMMARY:STOODIS Indigenous Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, the STOODIS Indigenous Film Festival debuted\, exploring the film industry’s “Colonial Gaze” and immersing audiences in authentic Indigenous narratives. Thomas King’s words\, “The truth about stories\, is that’s all we are\,” underscored the festival’s emphasis on the profound impact of storytelling\, particularly on youth. \nThe festival’s design draws inspiration from the Medicine Wheel\, a symbol of cultural significance\, representing life’s various facets for Indigenous communities. STOODIS aims to promote the normalization and celebration of Indigenous presence and perspectives. In the predominantly rural\, settler community in which we live\, the festival seeks to cultivate knowledge\, support\, and humanization of Indigenous people\, fostering a shared understanding of past\, present\, and future. \nIn  2024\, STOODIS will offer a celebration of diverse and compelling storytelling through film\, live performances\, and community engagement and conversations. The festival aims to showcase the work of emerging and established Indigenous artists while fostering a sense of community and cultural exchange. This year\, STOODIS will spotlight global Indigenous resistance\, excellence\, and resurgence.

SUMMARY:Saturday Storytime & Author Reading
DESCRIPTION:Join local author Kathryn Hartley read from her new novel Castle Mountain at The Nelson Public Library \nAuthor Reading at 10:30am \nFollowed by crafting from 11am to noon \nBook will be available for  purchase \nSynopsis: \nMOUNTAINS CAN BE MAGICAL PLACES.\nBUT DANGER IS NEVER FAR AWAY. \nThere were two things Joanie knew for certain when she woke up that morning:\n1. There was no way Mom was going to let any of them\nget out of marching up a mountain today.\n2. She didn’t want to be a part of this family any more. \nEvery May long weekend Joanie’s mom made the family do their traditional spring hike. At nine\, Joanie thought she was old enough to go stay at a friend’s instead of trudging up a mountain. But Chloe\, her annoying older sister\, and Matt\, her self-centered brother\, had both tried that before and it had never worked for them. So she knew she was doomed to do it again today. They all were. When Mom said jump\, they all jumped. Even Dad. And Dad was sick. No one talked about it but you’d have to be stupid not to notice. \nThen there was Chloe and Matt. Both teenagers. Both with attitude. The thought of spending a whole day with them\, with no escape\, made her want to turn into a little black beetle and crawl under the bed. \nThe magic and mystery of Castle Mountain will hold all their lives in its stony grip. Joanie and her family will be challenged beyond anything they have ever faced before. Will they be able to overcome what the mountain has in store?
