SUMMARY:Incandescence
DESCRIPTION:Incandescence\, a National Film Board of Canada production\, is an immersive cinematic experience that weaves together on-the-ground footage with extraordinary stories of survival and adaptation that transform our understanding of wildfire. \nWildfires are burning with increasing intensity around the world. Following the rhythms of the seasons\, Nova Ami and Velcrow Ripper’s Incandescence is an immersive cinematic experience\, weaving on-the-ground footage with extraordinary stories of survival and adaptation that transform our understanding of wildfire. The film takes shape from the ancient patterns embodied in fire: destruction\, aftermath and rebirth. From the flightpath of bees to an osprey’s aerial perspective\, floating over the landscape: the Earth comes back. \nThis important documentary provides insight into the devastating impact of the Okanagan wildfires in recent years\, highlighting the personal stories of affected individuals and the environmental consequences that resulted. Join the directors Ami and Ripper after the screening for a community post-screening Q & A. \nThis event is presented by the Capitol Theatre.

SUMMARY:Bleeding Tree International *Dark Drama Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Following the critical success of our inaugural Bleeding Tree festival in Cranbrook this past August\, an expanded three-day film screenings and industry networking event will take place May 2-4 at the Tivoli Theatre and Creston Hotel in Creston. Films screened at Bleeding Tree in August have gone on to win top-tier festivals around the world. And the slate of entries for 2025 is even stronger\, underscoring the prime directive of Bleeding Tree: provide for seriously-engaged film going audiences in a seriously rewarding way by screening some of the best short and longer-form dark drama and documentary films in the world. Films submitted by students this year are particularly strong\, underscoring the primary focus of this year’s event on new and emerging filmmakers. Presentations and panels featuring experienced industry players will be held over the three days of the festival\, providing all attendees with important learning and networking opportunities. \n* Niched somewhere between horror and psychological thriller\, dark drama films and documentaries selected for Bleeding Tree are more nuanced works\, often taking some sort of trauma or tragedy in a depicted or documented person’s life and finding connection\, community and resolution therein – including films that find away to find the humour or irony in such darkness – all leaving audiences not just entertained\, but ultimately enriched. A 2024 CBC Radio One interview with festival organizer Mark Wolfe can be heard here: https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-110-daybreak-south/clip/16086529-a-kootenay-based-filmmaker-takes-behind-scenes-cranbrook

SUMMARY:Debert Bunker: By Invitation Only film screening
DESCRIPTION:Outside a military base in Debert\, Nova Scotia\, on a cold day in February 1984\, a small but mighty group of women harnessed the power of performance art\, protest\, and the media—and captured the attention of the entire country. \nThat same day in February\, 329 people were planning on using the bunker for rehearsal of a nuclear attack—nearly all of them white\, middle-aged men with government or military leadership roles; only 11 women were on the list. \nMonths earlier\, women from all over the Maritimes began planning for a multi-faceted day of action\, dubbed Debunk Debert. The group arranged radio interviews on CBC morning shows\, arranged for men to handle the day’s cooking\, cleaning\, and childcare\, and staged a protest at Camp Debert\, the location of Atlantic Canada’s only cold war bunker. \nThe protesters’ message was clear: while these men continue government from inside the bunker\, what is happening to the women and children you’ve left behind? How do you continue government\, or humanity\, without a second generation? Documentary filmmaker Liz MacDougall explores these questions and covers the protest in her 1985 documentary Debert Bunker: By Invitation Only\, screening Friday\, March 14 in the Cold War Bunker\, presented by the Nelson Museum to celebrate International Women’s Day. \nThe screening of Debert Bunker: By Invitation Only is at 6:30pm on Friday\, March 14\, followed by an open discussion with Anna Purcell and Tressa Ford. Tickets are $10 for museum members and $15 for the general public and includes a reproduction of the ‘Debunk Debert’ buttons created for the original protest. \nTickets can be purchased in person at the Front Desk or online. Space is limited for this one-time only event.

SUMMARY:Base to Peak: Making Mountain Films
DESCRIPTION:2025 Momentum Masterclass Workshop \n\n Base to Peak Making Mountain Film Workshop with Trixie Pacis\n\nWHEN: Saturday January 11 2024\, 11am – 1pm PST\n\nWHERE: The Shoebox Theatre (225 Hall St\, Nelson\, BC V1L 5X4)\n\nCOST:$30 for general$25 for Kootenay Screen Based Industry Workers members$20 for studentsEmail lynn@kootenayfilm.com to sign up\n\nWHAT YOU’LL LEARN:Making mountain films is much like the adventures we embark upon outdoors. We begin at the base with a broad idea and work our way to the top\, refining our concept until we reach the peak\, where we have the opportunity to share what we’ve made with the world.\n\nFilmmaker Trixie Pacis shares her journey and recent experiences producing/directing her first three short outdoor documentary films — from developing stories (the base) to distributing them on the mountain festival circuit (the peak).\nThe second half of the workshop will transition into a free-flowing group discussion. Participants will have an opportunity to ask Trixie anything about her experience (particularly with story development\, production\, direction\, or festival distribution). More than just a Q&A\, participants are encouraged to engage in conversation about their own projects by pitching ideas\, asking for input\, and exploring actionable next steps.\n\nStick around after from 1:30-3:30pm for the January 2025 KSBI Meetup and watch Trixie’s short docs Wild Aerial (16m) and Wildflowers (37m)\, followed by a Q+A and networking.\n\nABOUT TRIXIE PACIS:Trixie Pacis is a filmmaker\, photographer\, and writer based in Kimberley\, British Columbia\, focusing on documenting unheard personal and environmental stories. Her documentary films\, Wildflowers and Wild Aerial\, are set to premiere at the 2024 Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival\, while her third film\, Ahon\, will debut at the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival in February 2025.\n\nWith over a decade of experience\, Trixie has worked with various media outlets\, including Los Angeles Magazine and Drive Films\, before transitioning to a freelance career. She has collaborated with global clients\, from film producers to travel agencies.\nAs the Director of Acquisitions and Programming for ChimeTV\, America’s first Asian American and Pacific Islander cable channel\, she promotes AAPI culture and representation. In recognition of her contributions\, she received L.A. TV Week’s 40 Under 40 Award in 2023. Trixie’s screenplay\, Vile & Sweet\, won Best Ghost Story at Horror Fest International in 2020\, and she participated in the Banff Centre Adventure Filmmakers’ Workshop in 2021.

SUMMARY:Southern Interior Season One Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a celebration and showing of SOUTHERN INTERIOR\, a 6-episode sketch comedy series that’s not just about Nelson – it is Nelson. \nPicture this: your downtown tour guides are a pair of goats (who may or may not be hallucinations)\, you’re starving but the farmer’s market only sells pottery\, and the redneck bachelor party you crash morphs into a rebirthing ceremony. \nCreated by Amy Bohigian\, produced by Gregory MacKenzie\, starring Lucas Myers\, Michelle Hart\, Lynne Karey-McKenna and Jonathan Ramos\, and featuring a 100% local cast and crew\, this show isn’t about outsiders looking in\, it’s a community turning the camera on itself\, reflecting back both satire and sincerity. \nThe Bell Fund\, Creative BC and Shaftesbury Media have all backed this professional production\, recognizing the universal appeal in Nelson’s unique story – where outsiders of all stripes have been finding refuge and building community for generations. \nIn an age of commodified authenticity\, SOUTHERN INTERIOR offers something rare: a genuine reflection of a place – this place\, our place – that stubbornly refuses to be anything but itself.
