SUMMARY:Book Launch and (optional) Illustrating Workshop
DESCRIPTION:New Denver artist and Kokanee Glacier hut keeper Petra Hekkenberg presents her new book Further in the Alpine – the second illustrated journal of Kokanee Park\, with stories\, visuals\, a short film\, Q&A\, book signing and an optional 1hr illustrating workshop at the end. The book presentation is by donation and supports the Slocan Lake Arts Council and the artist. The optional illustrating workshop has a small fee\, scroll down to read more!  \nAbout the book \nPetra shared her deep love for mountains in her first illustrated journal\, In the Alpine (2022)\, recording daily observations while working as a park operator at Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park. No two seasons are the same\, of course: Further in the Alpine is a continuation of this backcountry hut-keeper’s impressions as she engages with the park’s wild residents\, its visitors\, and her own human vulnerability through words and drawings that offer an intimate glimpse of life in the Alpine. \nShort Film “In your Mind’s Eye”  \nIn 2022 Petra created this 20 minute short film with the subtitle Moods of Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park and it won the first price at the North Valley Mountain Film Festival! Come enjoy this film on a big screen during her book launch. The film was co-created with Whitney Taylor (film) and Sam Harrisson (soundscape & audio) \nIllustrating Workshop for all ages (optional) \nFor those interested\, Petra offers a 1 hr illustrating workshop following her book presentation. Suitable for both adults and children. In this workshop\, Petra will show you some of the techniques and tricks to making pen illustrations! You could make your own Holiday card for example\, or draw a landscape or your favorite pet. All materials are provided. The workshop starts at 3PM and costs $20 for adults and $10 for children up to 16yrs old. Sign up with this registration form. Maximum 12 participants. \nFurther in the Alpine was self-published\, and this event held\, with the support of an Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA) grant of the West Kootenay Regional Arts Council and with support of the Slocan Lake Arts Council. \nSee more of Petra’s work here: \nInstagram @petrahekkenberg\nFacebook @petrahekkenberg\npetrahekkenberg.com

SUMMARY:"Kootenay Landmarks" Open Adjudicated Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:2025 Open\, Adjudicated Art Exhibit Celebrates Kootenay Landmarks | Art Gallery Kimberley Showcases Regional Creativity from January 30 to February 23\, 2025 \nKimberley\, BC—The stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage of the West and East Kootenays will take center stage at the 2025 Open\, Adjudicated Art Exhibit\, hosted by Art Gallery Kimberley. From January 30 through February 23\, 2025\, artists from across the region and beyond are displaying their unique interpretations of “Kootenay Landmarks.” This annual event is not only a celebration of the region’s beauty but also an opportunity for artists to gain exposure\, sell their work\, and compete for three awards: the Kootenay Art Prize\, the Inspiration Award\, and the newly introduced Peoples’ Choice Award. \nA Platform for Artistic Expression \nThe idea for this open art exhibit stemmed from a desire to offer more artists the chance to showcase their work in a professional gallery setting. “Winter is a quieter time for the gallery\, so creating an open exhibit during this season allows us to connect with more artists and provide a platform for their creativity\,” says Irma de Visser\, owner and operator of Art Gallery Kimberley. The event will feature an inclusive online gallery and webshop\, ensuring maximum visibility for every participating artist. \nA Joyful Experience for Artists and the Community \nExhibiting artists gain several benefits\, including: \n– Being part of an awesome celebration of Visual Art and The Kootenay region. \n– Guaranteed placement in an online gallery for a month. \n– A chance of placement in the gallery for a month. \n– Opportunities to connect with collectors\, peers\, and art enthusiasts. \n– Eligibility for prizes. \nFor Irma\, organizing this exhibition is a labor of love. “One of the highlights for me is connecting with (new) artists and watching their creations inspire our community. Fitting all the artworks into the gallery space without compromising their presentation is a welcome challenge.” \nA Fresh Approach to Awards \nTo make the adjudication process more inclusive and rewarding\, the gallery is using a unique selection method. Adjudicators will shortlist 10 artworks from the 20-25 artworks selected for display in the gallery\, and a random draw will determine the recipient of the Kootenay Art Prize. Similarly\, the Inspiration Award will be selected through a draw from the non-shortlisted entries\, offering every artist a chance to shine. The Peoples’ Choice Award invites the public to cast their votes in the gallery\, ensuring community involvement in the celebration. \nMeet the Adjudicators \nCaprice Hogg (Kimberley\, BC): oil painter\, teacher\, mentor\, and writer whose artistic journey spans three decades\, Caprice brings a wealth of experience and a passion for inspiring emerging artists. \nDavid Barnes (Creston\, BC): accomplished ceramic artist and teacher with a career rooted in innovation\, David’s dedication to mentoring the next generation of artists has left an indelible mark on the art community. \nIrma de Visser (Kimberley\, BC): Owner of Art Gallery Kimberley and a dedicated advocate for the arts\, Irma has played a pivotal role in fostering creativity and connection within the Kootenay region. \nJoin the Celebration\nThe public is warmly invited to experience the exhibit at Art Gallery Kimberley (Mon. – Wed. by appointment | Thur. – Sun. 10 am – 5 pm) and online from January 30 to February 23\, 2025. New this year is the introduction of a Peoples’ Choice Award allowing all visitors to vote for their favourite artwork. In addition\, there will be a Parallel Art Exhibit at Centre 64 (Tue.-Sat. 1-4 pm) for the artworks that aren’t included in the gallery selection at Art Gallery Kimberley. The festivities will culminate with a closing reception and award ceremony on Friday\, February 21 at 5:00 PM at the gallery\, providing an opportunity to celebrate the artists and their contributions to the region’s vibrant art scene. \nFor More Information\nContact Irma de Visser at info@artgallerykimberley.com for details on submissions\, exhibit schedules\, and more. \nCelebrate the art\, culture\, and landmarks of the Kootenays with us this winter—we can’t wait to see you there!

SUMMARY:SF Ho Artist talk + Closing reception
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition \nSF Ho \nTRIPLE BURNER FLOWER FIELD \n15 January – 8 March 2025 \nWednesdays to Saturdays\, 1 – 5PM \nAdmission is free \nArtist Talk by SF Ho \nSaturday\, March 8\, 2025 \n5:30 PM – 6:30 PM \nNotably\, a Book Lover’s Emporium (454 Ward St. Nelson\, BC) \nSuggested donation: $5 – $20 per person \nClosing Reception \nSaturday\, March 8\, 2025 \n6:30 PM – 8:00 PM \nOxygen Art Centre (#3-320 Vernon St. (alleyway entrance)\, Nelson\, BC) \nAdmission is free \nOxygen Art Centre presents two events to commemorate the closing of SF Ho’s exhibition TRIPLE BURNER FLOWER FIELD. The exhibition has been on view at the artist-run centre since January 15\, 2025\, following Ho’s residency in November and December 2024. \nThe public are invited to attend an artist talk by SF Ho held at Notably\, a Book Lover’s Emporium at 454 Ward St. Nelson\, BC\, on Saturday\, March 8\, 2025\, at 5:30pm. Admission is a suggested donation of $5 – $20 per person at the door. \nThe artist talk will feature background on the Vancouver-based writer and artist’s practice and current research that led to the exhibition\, TRIPLE BURNER FLOWER FIELD. A slide presentation will accompany the talk. Topics will range from Traditional Chinese Medicine and plant cultivation and use in artistic practice\, to historical research into Chinese agrarian and cultural practices. \nFollowing the artist talk\, the public are invited to the artist-run centre along the alleyway for a Closing Reception celebration of Ho’s exhibition at 6:30 PM. Refreshments and light snacks will be provided. Admission to the closing reception is free. \nThe exhibition attends to the use of common plants while speaking to first-generation settlers about agriculture and medicine. By highlighting the spiritual and medicinal uses of tea\, yarrow\, poppy and mugwort\, the exhibition examines how life is separated into the categories of useful commodities or invasive weeds within the framework of global capitalism. \nTRIPLE BURNER FLOWER FIELD also includes archival and oral accounts of the role of the barefoot doctor during the Cultural Revolution\, the agricultural land defense movement in Hong Kong\, and the early Chinese market gardens of Nelson\, BC. Using emptiness and manifold duality as guiding principles\, art making becomes a kind of serious play that points to interdependence with land and beings while eschewing human supremacy. \nTRIPLE BURNER FLOWER FIELD is currently on view at Oxygen Art Centre from January 15\, 2025\, to March 8\, 2025\, on Wednesdays to Saturdays from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. \nSF Ho will be present in Nelson\, B.C.\, for the Artist Talk event at Notably (5:30 pm) and Closing Reception event at Oxygen Art Centre (6:30 pm) on Saturday\, March 8\, 2025. \nOxygen Art Centre is an artist-run centre located at #3-320 Vernon Street along the alleyway behind Baker Street. \nThis program is generously supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Regional District of Central Kootenay ReDi program. \nArtist Bio: \nSF Ho (they/them) is an artist\, writer and organizer. They have been living as an uninvited guest on the unceded territories of the xwməθkwəy̓ əm\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh\, and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ peoples for over fourteen years. Operating somewhere between words and whatever words can’t be\, their work is informed by feminist methodologies\, land-based practices\, and grassroots community networks. Ho has presented their artwork and writing both regionally and internationally. They published a book about love and aliens called George\, the Parasite.

SUMMARY:“Uno” by Raul Pous Facha
DESCRIPTION:Meet Raul: Architect\, Artist\, and Digital Fabrication Visionary\n\n\n\n“I’m Raul\, an architect and artist of Mexican origin\, now based in Canada since 2022. My lifelong fascination with materials and manufacturing techniques has deeply influenced my approach to design. While I’ve always appreciated the artistry and individuality of handmade products\, I’ve also recognized the challenges they face in achieving precision and consistent quality.\n\n\n\nThis curiosity led me to digital fabrication\, where I discovered the power to translate complex designs into reality with precision and control.
