SUMMARY:Castlegar Community Drum Circle
DESCRIPTION:Set free your inner rhythm\, connect with your community\, and let the beat move you! \nWelcome to the Castlegar Community Drum Circle as part of Rhythm by Nature’s Community Drumming Tour! \nSupported by the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance\, Rhythm by Nature brings you a fully interactive and immersive drumming experience for one night only in the Selkirk Room of the Castlegar & District Community Complex. \nNo drumming experience is needed and all the instruments are provided. \nProfessionally facilitated\, participants will learn about and experiment with different drums and drumming techniques from all around the world. You’ll experience a fun and inclusive drumming workshop\, but that’s only the beginning! \nHere are a number of reasons why this event is for you: \n\nGroup drumming releases stress and negative emotions\nYou’re pulled into the present moment\nIt induces deep relaxation\nIt provides a sense of empowerment\nIt can reduce chronic pain & boost the immune system\nYour body and mind align with the natural world\nYou’re offered a non-verbal communicative tool\nIt allows for personal transformation\nOh\, and it’s a whole lot of fun!\n\n\nDiscounts are offered when you buy three or more tickets!\nInstruments are provided but feel free to bring your own.\n\n  \nA little about Rhythm By Nature and your facilitator\, Patrick Carrick: \nPatrick is a certified ‘Circles of Rhythm’ master facilitator\, professional percussionist\, and music educator. Patrick has a passion for bringing people together through the power of rhythm and has worked within a wide variety of musical genres and ensembles. \nPatrick founded Rhythm by Nature in 2016 and it has since become a popular mainstay in BC’s Columbia Valley region\, offering a variety of programs and events that promote community connection\, wellness\, social development\, and creativity. \nPatrick’s affection for music and drumming has taken him all around the world\, finally growing roots in the Kootenays. After completing three levels of facilitation training with the nationally acclaimed ‘Circles Of Rhythm’ & internationally recognized Rhythm2Recovery\, Patrick has been hosting community drumming events in the communities of Invermere\, Radium Hot Springs\, Panorama Mountain Resort\, Fairmont Hot Springs\, Edgewater\, Canal Flats\, Kimberley\, Golden and beyond. Rhythm by Nature has earned a reputation for its positive community impact and inclusive approach to group drumming. \nThanks to the support of the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance\, Rhythm By Nature is touring the entire Columbia Basin throughout the Fall with the intention of demonstrating the many benefits that come from the Integrative Community Drum Circle. \nAn Important Distinction: \nRhythm By Nature follows the ‘Integrative Community Drum Circle (ICDC)’ methodology. This means that our drumming is not based on any ethnospecific traditions\, cultures\, or rhythms. The ICDC employs a multicultural approach so that the experience is accessible to everyone. It’s about celebrating our diversity\, creativity\, and playfulness. Our drums are from all around the world but do not hold any limiting cultural or ceremonial significance. Our instruments are of premium quality and are made from 100% recycled wood fiber. \nFamilies are most welcome. We find that very young children have trouble holding attention for the whole session and we kindly ask that children of all ages are responsibly supervised\, for the enjoyment of all : )

SUMMARY:Cottonwood Reading
DESCRIPTION:Elephant Mountain Lit Fest is proud to present some of Western Canada’s most riveting storytellers and writers in a reading together on Friday\, September 15th at 7:00pm at The Capitol Theatre in Nelson. Join Ivan Coyote\, John Vaillant\, Sonnet L’Abbé\, and Deryn Collier in a celebration of dynamic\, important stories\, and writers and wordsmiths who bring them to life. \nWriter and storyteller Ivan Coyote will be gracing the stage to speak about their 13th book\, Care Of. Born and raised in Whitehorse\, Yukon\, they are the author of thirteen books\, the creator of four films\, six stage shows\, and three albums that combine storytelling with music. Coyote’s stories grapple with the complex and intensely personal topics of gender identity\, family\, class\, and queer liberation\, but always with a generous heart\, and a quick wit. Ivan’s stories manage to handle both the hilarious and the historical with reverence and compassion\, and remind us all of our own fallible and imperfect humanity\, while at the same time inspiring us to change the world. \nJohn Vaillant’s acclaimed\, award-winning nonfiction books\, The Golden Spruce and The Tiger\, were national bestsellers. His debut novel\, The Jaguar’s Children\, was a finalist for the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and the International Dublin Literary Award. Vaillant has received the Governor General’s Literary Award\, British Columbia’s National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction\, the Windham-Campbell Literature Prize\, and the Pearson Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction. He lives in Vancouver. \nHis newest novel Fire Weather was released earlier this year. In masterly prose and cinematic style\, John Vaillant weaves together an enthralling\, multifaceted story of how Fort McMurray revealed a new normal of fires burning longer and with greater intensity than at any other time this planet has ever known. From the large-scale histories of North American resource extraction and climate science\, to the intimate tales of lives scarred by the Fort McMurray disaster\, Valliant’s urgent work is a book for — and from — our new century of fire. (From Knopf Canada) \nSonnet L’Abbé is a Canadian poet\, performer\, editor\, and professor. They are the author of A Strange Relief\, Killarnoe\, Anima Canadensis and Sonnet’s Shakespeare. They teach Creative Writing and English at Vancouver Island University\, and are a poetry editor at Brick Books. They had their first solo performance of songs and poems at Nanaimo’s Port Theatre in 2021. \nIn a defiant act of literary patricide and a feat of painstaking poetic labour\, Sonnet L’Abbé works with the pages of Shakespeare’s sonnets as a space they will inhabit\, as a place of power they will occupy. Letter by letter\, they sit their own language down into the white spaces of Shakespeare’s poems\, until they overwhelm the original text and effectively erase Shakespeare’s voice by subsuming his words into theirs. In each of the 154 dense new poems of Sonnet’s Shakespeare sits one “aggrocultured” Shakespearean sonnet–displaced\, spoken over\, but never entirely silenced. \nDeryn Collier has dreamed of writing mystery novels since reading her first Nancy Drew in the second grade. She has written two previous novels\, Confined Space\, which was nominated for a Best First Novel award by the Crime Writers of Canada\, and Open Secret. Based on the true story of her aunt\, Deryn’s new postwar historical novel A Real Somebodycharts the journey of a talented young writer who dares to break the conventions of her time during one pivotal season of her life.

SUMMARY:WHEN PIGS FLY: New Paintings by Kristian Adam
DESCRIPTION:The “When pigs fly” idiom is a type of adynaton and soon to be an art show\, too! We’ll get to the art show part in a second. But first\, let’s talk about adynatons. An adynaton is not only a super cool word\, it’s also a figure of speech involving the use of a phrase that represents something impossible. So when we say\, “When Pigs Fly\,” we are saying something will NEVER EVER EVER happen. \nBut we all know nothing’s impossible\, especially with a little ingenuity and a little imagination. Sometimes… just sometimes\, if you look up at the sky at just the right time… at just the right angle\, you might\, in fact\, see a literal pig flying. And the whole adynaton thing goes out the window. \nOn August 18th\, you won’t believe your eyes\, because LEVITY Micro Gallery is proudly presenting the next collection of work from KRISTIAN ADAM titled WHEN PIGS FLY. It is a collection of more than 30 original\, new paintings filled with impossibilities\, levity\, wit\, wonder and charm. \nWHEN PIGS FLY will run from August 19th to October 8th\, 2023 and will launch with an opening reception on Saturday\, August 19th from 7pm to 10pm. Things you may encounter at this reception: A dapper rabbit driving a pink plastic car\, a parakeet wearing a scarf and a fancy sweater\, a giraffe in a blow-up boat playing a swimming pool\, a NymNum karaoke party\, and so so so much more. \nKristian Adam’s paintings use a host of whimsical and childlike characters that reflect\, “Our roles in society and reveal the consequences of our actions on the future.” These imagined creatures\, called NymNums\, are what you might expect to see wandering around in his mind all day. Through a variety of techniques inspired by the old masters\, this Canadian-born artist creates quirky narratives for his characters to tell. His work has been displayed in the Canadian Embassies of Japan\, Korea\, and China\, as well as featured in books and television. He exhibits regularly throughout Vancouver\, BC and in galleries around the world. \nWHEN PIGS FLY\nNew Paintings by Kristian Adam \nAugust 19 – October 8\, 2023 \nOpening Reception: Saturday\, August 19\, 7-10pm\nFree Event

SUMMARY:Brain Scans / Neurotransmitting Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:Brain Scans/Neurotransmitting \nRuth and Theo Jean Cuthand  \nJune 24 to October October 21\, 2023 \nOpening Friday\, June 23 @ 7pm \nRuth and Theo Cuthand’s exhibition Brain Scans / Neurotransmitting\, opening at the Nelson Museum on Friday\, June 23\, seeks to explore the difficulty of facing mental health challenges\, and how families unite in support of one another. \n“Mental health is a big problem on reserves  and there’s a lot of shame with it\,” says Ruth\, whose contribution to the exhibition is a series of intricately beaded reproductions of MRI scans. They illuminate the brain scans of people with ADHD\, depression\, PTSD\, and more. (There are also some pieces from an earlier series that focus on diseases such as measles and monkeypox.) “Mental health problems run in my family\, so I’m really aware of it and want to being awareness to the fact that mental health is not something to be ashamed of.” \nRuth’s son Theo created a short film to accompany the beadwork\, capturing a conversation about his latest manic episode. The film is presented from the perspective of a mother trying to care for an adult child as they experience mental illness\, as well as the individual experiencing illness firsthand.
