SUMMARY:STOODIS Indigenous Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, the STOODIS Indigenous Film Festival debuted\, exploring the film industry’s “Colonial Gaze” and immersing audiences in authentic Indigenous narratives. Thomas King’s words\, “The truth about stories\, is that’s all we are\,” underscored the festival’s emphasis on the profound impact of storytelling\, particularly on youth. \nThe festival’s design draws inspiration from the Medicine Wheel\, a symbol of cultural significance\, representing life’s various facets for Indigenous communities. STOODIS aims to promote the normalization and celebration of Indigenous presence and perspectives. In the predominantly rural\, settler community in which we live\, the festival seeks to cultivate knowledge\, support\, and humanization of Indigenous people\, fostering a shared understanding of past\, present\, and future. \nIn  2024\, STOODIS will offer a celebration of diverse and compelling storytelling through film\, live performances\, and community engagement and conversations. The festival aims to showcase the work of emerging and established Indigenous artists while fostering a sense of community and cultural exchange. This year\, STOODIS will spotlight global Indigenous resistance\, excellence\, and resurgence.

SUMMARY:Author Reading: Frank and the Elephants: A Romance of the Rockies
DESCRIPTION:Richard Rowberry will be doing a presentation (reading and a talk) of Frank and the Elephants: A Romance of the Rockies at the Kaslo Library and the Nelson Museum\, 6:30 pm Sunday Sept. 29 and 7:00 pm Wednesday Oct 2.\n\nIt’s a free event! Richard will be selling copies (autographed!) if you’d care to take one home so you can find out what happened in the end.\n\n\nFrank and the Elephants: A Romance of the Rockies was a finalist for the Sunshine Coast Writers and Editors Book Awards. \n” A vivid writer conveying a strong sense of place and time. I really did feel myself in 1920s Cranbrook.  And the story\, of course\, is fascinating. Beautifully captured\, and a charming love story.” Iona Whishaw – author of the Lane Winslow Mysteries \n“Using his considerable gifts as a storyteller\, Rowberry spins a tale with equal measures of humour and humanity. So engaging are the exploits of Frank—in love and in elephants—that a reader might not even notice the meticulous research that has served to place us so authentically in 1920s small-town B.C. ” Anne DeGrace – Award-winning Kootenay Author \n“This is a hilarious tongue in cheek tale of an absurd situation in small town BC. I laughed throughout and followed along through the geography of the region I know so well. A true Canadian classic.” Bob McDonald host of CBC’s Quirks and Quarks

SUMMARY:Look Now What Ive Become
DESCRIPTION:Andrea shares her personal story of healing and transformation through creativity. This exhibit is a reflection of the resilience of our spirits and the power of art as a tool for recovery and self-discovery. \nAndrea’s work\, which started as a way to cope with the trauma of spousal abuse\, evolved into an expression of joy\, strength\, and authenticity. Her incredible clay sculptures are more than just art; they are a reflection of her path from pain to peace\, and from survival to an authentic life. \nJoin us for an inspiring afternoon where Andrea will share how her creative process became a form of art therapy\, allowing her to channel her emotions and experiences into something beautiful and empowering. This is not a story of suffering\, but one of healing\, hope\, and the incredible power of creativity to shape our lives. \nCome\, take in this uplifting exhibit\, and see the artworks that have not only transformed Andrea’s life but also are a beacon of hope for others in their own experience of healing.

SUMMARY:Author Reading at Huckleberry Books in Cranbrook\, B.C.
DESCRIPTION:Cranbrook – Thursday\, Oct 17th – 7:00pm! Join Kootenay author and musician Shelby Knudsen as she speaks about her latest novel\, One Night Only. Knudsen has been a member of the band Wild Honey for over a decade. Her debut novel\, Mountain Girl\, was a heart-pounding thriller about forbidden love and captivity. In her second novel\, Knudsen dives into the dark side of the music industry. Kirkus Reviews selected One Night Only as the indie pick for August\, and declared “Knudsen’s novel is tense and unrelenting; the author masterfully creates an immersive\, claustrophobic atmosphere as Sky’s health\, relationships\, and sense of self become increasingly strained.” And with a Five Star review\, Reader Views said\, “One Night Only by Shelby Knudsen is a deeply affecting novel about addiction\, love\, and the magic of music. The author has intricately created a world of contrast\, one where Sky is forced to place her life (and dreams) on a hiatus and take care of herself\, and the other where she signs her future over to someone else for the promise of an enviable music career. Raw\, poignant\, and achingly beautiful—this book needs to be at the top of your reading pile for 2024!”\nShelby will be interviewed by her Wild Honey bandmate Jessica Niedermayer\, followed by a few songs by the acoustic trio. Don’t miss this special night\, celebrating local talent and music.

SUMMARY:‘ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ੇ ‘ਚ ਤਰੇੜ | sheeshe ‘ch tharer | a crack in the mirror’ exhibition opening
DESCRIPTION:It is easy to get swept up in the beauty of the brightly coloured\, intricately patterned fabrics that create ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ੇ ‘ਚ ਤਰੇੜ | sheeshe ‘ch tharer | a crack in the mirror\, a visually satiating exhibition by Surrey artist Simranpreet Anand and Conner Singh VanderBeek\, which is touring to the Nelson Museum\, Archives & Gallery from October 26\, 2024 to February 15\, 2025\, from the Reach Gallery in Abbotsford. Upon closer inspection\, the viewer can see the hardened\, curling  edges of the fabric panels\, proof of the melted plastics contained within. \nAnand’s work explores the Sikh and Punjab diaspora\, often through textiles\, language\, and photographs. It examines the traditional role of women in Indian culture and offers a new perspective on the rigid confines of worship. \nThe exhibition opens on Friday\, October 25 from 7-9pm. This event is FREE and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Book Launch and (optional) Illustrating Workshop
DESCRIPTION:New Denver artist and Kokanee Glacier hut keeper Petra Hekkenberg presents her new book Further in the Alpine – the second illustrated journal of Kokanee Park\, with stories\, visuals\, a short film\, Q&A\, book signing and an optional 1hr illustrating workshop at the end. The book presentation is by donation and supports the Slocan Lake Arts Council and the artist. The optional illustrating workshop has a small fee\, scroll down to read more!  \nAbout the book \nPetra shared her deep love for mountains in her first illustrated journal\, In the Alpine (2022)\, recording daily observations while working as a park operator at Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park. No two seasons are the same\, of course: Further in the Alpine is a continuation of this backcountry hut-keeper’s impressions as she engages with the park’s wild residents\, its visitors\, and her own human vulnerability through words and drawings that offer an intimate glimpse of life in the Alpine. \nShort Film “In your Mind’s Eye”  \nIn 2022 Petra created this 20 minute short film with the subtitle Moods of Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park and it won the first price at the North Valley Mountain Film Festival! Come enjoy this film on a big screen during her book launch. The film was co-created with Whitney Taylor (film) and Sam Harrisson (soundscape & audio) \nIllustrating Workshop for all ages (optional) \nFor those interested\, Petra offers a 1 hr illustrating workshop following her book presentation. Suitable for both adults and children. In this workshop\, Petra will show you some of the techniques and tricks to making pen illustrations! You could make your own Holiday card for example\, or draw a landscape or your favorite pet. All materials are provided. The workshop starts at 3PM and costs $20 for adults and $10 for children up to 16yrs old. Sign up with this registration form. Maximum 12 participants. \nFurther in the Alpine was self-published\, and this event held\, with the support of an Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA) grant of the West Kootenay Regional Arts Council and with support of the Slocan Lake Arts Council. \nSee more of Petra’s work here: \nInstagram @petrahekkenberg\nFacebook @petrahekkenberg\npetrahekkenberg.com
