SUMMARY:"Tides" by Neal Panton
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Capturing Moments of Change\n“Tides” \nCranbrook-based photographer Neal Panton reveals his latest solo exhibit\, “Tides\,” at Art Gallery Kimberley in BC’s Best Small Town from May 16th to May 26th\, 2024. The exhibit invites viewers to explore the fleeting moments of change captured along the Pacific North Coast\, including Haida Gwaii\, the North Coast Trail on Vancouver Island\, and the Oregon Coast. \nBorn and raised in Hamilton\, Ontario\, Neal Panton developed a passion for photography from an early age. As a self-taught photographer\, a former university professor of Photography and Visual Language\, as well as a photojournalist for Reuters news agency\, Neal brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his work. His passion for storytelling through images is apparent in every piece featured in “Tides\,” creating an immersive experience for all who visit the exhibit.\nInspired by the beauty and complexity of the moments in between\, “Tides” showcases Neal’s distinctive photographic style\, reminiscent of the darkroom photography process executed through the use of modern photo editing software. Through a combination of intuition and skill\, Neal’s photographs reflect a sense of contemplation and introspection\, inviting viewers to find their own unique connection to the images. \nAccording to Neal\, photography as an art form has unique characteristics. He explains\, “In most traditional art forms\, like painting\, sculpture\, drawing\, and even etching\, you can visibly see the artist’s handiwork—the brushstrokes\, the lines\, the shaping of the material. However\, photography is different. Often\, it appears captured rather than crafted. Its construction is less clear. As an art form\, photography is also more accessible. Almost anyone can engage in photography\, regardless of their background or expertise.” \nUnlike social media snapshots\, the photographs showcased in galleries invite us to pause and ponder\, revealing deeper meaning within each frame. Neal aims to connect with viewers on a deeper level\, seeking friends who share an appreciation for the beauty and wonder of nature. \n“Tides” explores the moments in between——pauses\, transitions\, and liminal spaces where change is imminent. These photographs highlight the in-between spaces along the Pacific North Coast\, representing a shift from one state to another\, often feeling uncertain and detached from reality.\nThe opening reception for “Tides” will take place on Friday\, May 17th\, between 7 and 9 pm. Art enthusiasts and nature lovers alike are invited to experience Neal’s moving photography at Art Gallery Kimberley between May 16 – 26\, 2024. The exhibit welcomes visitors from Thursday through Sunday\, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm\, and accommodates appointments from Monday to Wednesday. Don’t miss this opportunity to take in the beauty and complexity of the moments in between. \nFor more information or to schedule a visit\, please contact Art Gallery Kimberley at 250-432-9225 or info@artgallerykimberley.com.

This event will be a taste of what is to come at the seventh annual darkwave festival on Coast Salish territory (Vancouver\, BC). \nLocation: Oxygen Art Centre
Address: 320 Vernon St Unit-3\, Sinixt təmxʷúlaʔx (Nelson\, BC)
Date: Sunday May 5th\, 2024\nTime: EARLY SHOW Doors 7pm\, Show 8pm
Tickets: $15 advance (link below)\, $20 door\nhttps://restlessnites.com/events/dancingplaguewithguestsdarkartsmarket5may2024 \nMUSICIAN BIOS: \nDANCING PLAGUE: Portland\, OR’s Dancing Plague makes broodingly intense but surprisingly emotional dark electronic music. Since the solo project’s inception in 2015\, Dancing Plague has released four albums and four EPs\, solidifying them in the world of darkwave and body music. \nWords about new album\, out March 2024: On their 5th studio album “Elogium”\, Portland based electronic act Dancing Plague continues to flesh out and perfect their unique brand of crushing Darkwave. The album explores themes of loss\, regret\, rebirth and growth coupled with throbbing basslines\, rave synths\, and pounding drums. Dancing Plague balances aggressive waves of electronics with enough pop sensibilities and catchy hooks to be inviting to those new to the genre. \nBandcamp: www.dancingplaguemusic.bandcamp.com\nFacebook: www.facebook.com/dancingplaguemusic\nInstagram: @dancingplaguemusic \nPost-Punk.com single premiere: https://post-punk.com/portland-darkwave-project-dancing-plague-debuts-new-single-dreamless/ \nRENONCE: Renonce is a Montreal project of industrial/darkwave music created in 2021.  Their second album Nuisance sonore was produced by Annie-Claude Deschênes (Duchess Says\, Pypy) and mixed by the Toronto industrial duo Odonis Odonis. Noisier and more aggressive\, it will be released in April 2024 on Verboden x Negative Gain.  For fans of electronic saturation\, industrial noise and vocal fry. \nBandcamp:  https://renonce.bandcamp.com/album/nuisance-sonore\nInstagram: @renoncemtl \nTOTAL CHROMA: Total Chroma\, the project of Canadian minimal synth artist Isku Katerwol\, offers a creative fusion of Italo disco\, classic EBM\, minimal wave\, and post punk sounds among other styles. Katerwol combines diverse influences into a genre-defying hybrid. \nBandcamp: https://totalchroma.bandcamp.com/album/lapland\nInstagram: @totalchroma \nJAKOB: The intertwined circle and triangle is an ancient alchemical symbol representing a precise transmutation. The extension of the triangle’s points beyond the parameters of the circle indicates that the reaction will take place free from coercion or control\, where the radius of the transformation is wholly dependent upon the strength of the reaction. Extending this incantation to the transformative potential of music\, it is also clear that carefully curated audio atmospheres have the capacity to provoke captivating responses among audiences. \nInstagram: @jakobsounds\nSoundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/jakob-sounds \nDARK ARTS MARKET VENDORS: \nLITTLE MAGICS\n@_littlemagics \nPUPILLE\n@p.upille \nSYLVIE LE SYLVIE\n@sylvielesylvie \nVÖLUR CHAINMAILLE\n@volur.chainmaille \n-No forms of bigotry\, harassment or hate will be tolerated\n-Consent is mandatory\n-Celebrate responsibly\n-Please contact us if you have any accessibility requirements and would like to attend\n-Capacity is limited\, please arrive early \n#darkwave #ebm #industrial #synthpunk #verboden #goth

There was no way Mom was going to let any of them\nget out of marching up a mountain today.\n2. She didn’t want to be a part of this family any more. \nEvery May long weekend Joanie’s mom made the family do their traditional spring hike. At nine\, Joanie thought she was old enough to go stay at a friend’s instead of trudging up a mountain. But Chloe\, her annoying older sister\, and Matt\, her self-centered brother\, had both tried that before and it had never worked for them. So she knew she was doomed to do it again today. They all were. When Mom said jump\, they all jumped. Even Dad. And Dad was sick. No one talked about it but you’d have to be stupid not to notice. \nThen there was Chloe and Matt. Both teenagers. Both with attitude. The thought of spending a whole day with them\, with no escape\, made her want to turn into a little black beetle and crawl under the bed. \nThe magic and mystery of Castle Mountain will hold all their lives in its stony grip. Joanie and her family will be challenged beyond anything they have ever faced before. Will they be able to overcome what the mountain has in store?
