SUMMARY:Summer Kicks: The Kootenay Renegades with Holly Hyatt & Jon Burden
DESCRIPTION:Holly Hyatt and Jon Burden have morphed from an acoustic blues duo to an electric quartet that performs with a powerful blend of grit\, soul\, and rock. \nAward-winning vocalist-bassist Holly Hyatt and vocalist-guitarist Jon Burden have played Golden a few times already\, but never like this! \nWhat used to be an internationally acclaimed acoustic blues duo who performed with Harry Manx and Jim Byrnes has transformed into the Kootenay Renegades\, a hard-driving and very electric quartet that performs a heady mix of roots and blues as well as catchy rock classics and some tasty originals. With the addition of drummer Steve Wilson and Marty Carter on sax and flute\, these four superb musicians plug in and let rip with a powerful blend of blues grit\, soul\, and fiery rock. Jon is rated an “extraordinary” guitarist by the Smoky Mountain Blues Society\, while Holly’s honey-rich vocals “captivate the listener” (Blues Blog USA). Better not miss these guys! \nFeaturing Local talent: Unusual Suspects

SUMMARY:2024 Sinixt Canoe Journey Nelson Stop
DESCRIPTION:The Nelson stop of the Canoe Journey offers community members the chance to paddle alongside the traditional dugout canoes\, discover the secrets of nature in our medicinal plant workshop\, and enjoy live performances by Sinixt Members. \nThe Canoe Journey is a powerful assertion of the belief that Indigenous peoples of the region are stewards of the river and the salmon—one of their first foods. This journey highlights the vital connection between their language\, culture\, and the natural environment. \nThis event offers a transformative opportunity for the (Sinixt) Snayckstx/Arrow Lakes and Colville people (Snʕayckstx and Sxʷyʔiłp) to reconnect with their language\, traditional territories\, and waterways. The Salmon Ceremony\, a traditional and spiritual practice\, addresses the needs of both the people and the environment. This may be one of the most significant moments in history to amplify the Indigenous community’s voice regarding our shared responsibility to the land\, waters\, and natural environment. \nLast year’s journey spanned 272 miles\, from the Head Waters of the Columbia River at Revelstoke and Two Rivers\, Washington\, on the Spokane Indian Reservation\, culminating at the Kettle Falls Fishery and traditional Salmon Ceremony site. \nThis year’s sponsors are: \nColumbia Power Corporation\, West Kootenay Regional Arts Council\, Nelson Museum\, Archives and Gallery\, The Capitol Theatre\, Real Estate Foundation of BC\, The Nelson Chamber of Commerce\, Lalin Vocal Ensemble\, Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism\, VIDEA\, BC Arts Council\, The City of Nelson\, Canadian Heritage\, The Hume Hotel. \nBelow is a full list of free community opportunities. SUMMARY:Peter’s Day at the Doukhobor Discovery Centre
DESCRIPTION:Doukohbors gather on Peter’s Day (Petrov Den’) to commemorate the Burning of Arms\, which took place in Russia in 1895. The Burning of Arms event ultimately reaffirmed the Doukhobors’ commitment to pacifism as many Doukhobors laid whatever weaponry they owned in a community bonfire. At the DDC\, Peter’s Day is observed through a community gathering\, featuring the singing of hymns\, as well as a vegetarian picnic lunch\, and an afternoon speaker series.
