SUMMARY:KHC Summer Kicks- Qairo
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday Night from 7-9\, Free outdoor concert at Keith King Park: Golden BC. \nQairo (pronounced Cairo) is a passionate and innovative septet whose pan-Mediterranean sound combines the fire of flamenco with a heady blend of Turkish micro-tonality\, highly charged Balkan rhythms\, and spicy Middle Eastern melodies. Singer Alejandro Mendia and dancers Lia Grainger and Deborah “La Caramelita” were part of a popular flamenco ensemble for years before merging with flamenco guitarist Manuel Vazquez and clarinetist and saxophonist Dorian Zavatta. Their goal was to create a radical musical hybrid\, and with the addition of percussionist Alex Carrasco and drummer Gaetan Diaz\, Cairo hit paydirt. Onstage they unleash a firestorm of music and dance that is rooted in centuries-old folk traditions yet taps into a modern\, freewheeling eclecticism that crackles with chemistry. DESCRIPTION:Want to learn and practice dancing Argentine Tango?\n\n\nWe host a weekly mini-lesson and practica at Christie Lee’s Hall in Fairview.\n\n\nThe guided portion from 7:30-8:15 has a different host and topic each week (check our Facebook page for host and topic announcements). We have an open practice after the lesson until 9:30pm.\n\n\n\nDancers of all levels are welcome! Material is beginner-friendly.\n\n\nTango is an improvised partner dance originating in Argentina and Uruguay; you don’t need a partner to attend tango practices or events and it can be danced by anyone and everyone.\n\n\n\n\nPlease bring your dancing shoes and a water bottle.\n\n\n5$ donation\n\n\n\nWhere to find us: Christies Lees Hall is on Radio Ave.\, in lower Fairview. Someone didn’t give Jaryn that memo. \nFriesen\, born and raised in Steinbach\, MB\, is only 28 but his music packs the richness of a writer decades his senior.  \nFriesen’s sound is raw and honest\, which makes the tunes feel like talking with an old friend. His grovel-y voice with just the right amount of drawl sings of yearning for some place\, some time elsewhere and hits familiar tones and themes which make it feel like coming home. It’s Americana with small town angst. \nBobby Dove is a Canadian singer-songwriter who is quickly becoming a magnetic presence in the world of Country and Americana music. With a voice as powerful as their storytelling\, Dove pays tribute to the golden age of Country\, while crafting original\, emotionally charged songs that are fresh off the heartworn highway. \nBobby’s internationally acclaimed sophomore album\, Hopeless Romantic (2021) includes some of the finest musicians on the Canadian roots music scene\, including Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy\, Bazil Donovan and Jimmy Bowskill.

DESCRIPTION:Ukraine-born Nastasia Y brings a fabulous fusion of jazz and Slavic folk music to the Taghum Hall gazebo\, joined by Andrew McAnsh on trumpet for an outdoor concert in the Taghum Hall gazebo on Wednesday\, July 24 at 7:30pm. There is a workshop from 6 – 7 that features Ukrainian folksongs for healing (all are welcome! No singing experience necessary. The workshop is free for Ukrainian refugees). Concert and workshop are $15 each\, and kids 12 and under are free. Ukrainian food and souvenirs will be available for purchase\, with proceeds to the Maple Hope Foundation. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket! (some benches available).

DESCRIPTION:During the height of the Cold War\, in the 1950s and 1960s\, nearly 50 bunkers were constructed across Canada. In 2017\, the Nelson Museum began work on restoring the space and opening it to the public. You can join a tour of one of the Museumʼs best-loved spaces! \nFrom iodine pills and Geiger counters to board games and ashtrays\, visitors get a glimpse of the vast measures taken to create normalcy in an extraordinary time. \nEmail info@nelsonmuseum.ca to register.
