SUMMARY:"Tides" by Neal Panton
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Capturing Moments of Change\n“Tides” \nCranbrook-based photographer Neal Panton reveals his latest solo exhibit\, “Tides\,” at Art Gallery Kimberley in BC’s Best Small Town from May 16th to May 26th\, 2024. The exhibit invites viewers to explore the fleeting moments of change captured along the Pacific North Coast\, including Haida Gwaii\, the North Coast Trail on Vancouver Island\, and the Oregon Coast. \nBorn and raised in Hamilton\, Ontario\, Neal Panton developed a passion for photography from an early age. As a self-taught photographer\, a former university professor of Photography and Visual Language\, as well as a photojournalist for Reuters news agency\, Neal brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his work. His passion for storytelling through images is apparent in every piece featured in “Tides\,” creating an immersive experience for all who visit the exhibit.\nInspired by the beauty and complexity of the moments in between\, “Tides” showcases Neal’s distinctive photographic style\, reminiscent of the darkroom photography process executed through the use of modern photo editing software. Through a combination of intuition and skill\, Neal’s photographs reflect a sense of contemplation and introspection\, inviting viewers to find their own unique connection to the images. \nAccording to Neal\, photography as an art form has unique characteristics. He explains\, “In most traditional art forms\, like painting\, sculpture\, drawing\, and even etching\, you can visibly see the artist’s handiwork—the brushstrokes\, the lines\, the shaping of the material. However\, photography is different. Often\, it appears captured rather than crafted. Its construction is less clear. As an art form\, photography is also more accessible. Almost anyone can engage in photography\, regardless of their background or expertise.” \nUnlike social media snapshots\, the photographs showcased in galleries invite us to pause and ponder\, revealing deeper meaning within each frame. Neal aims to connect with viewers on a deeper level\, seeking friends who share an appreciation for the beauty and wonder of nature. \n“Tides” explores the moments in between——pauses\, transitions\, and liminal spaces where change is imminent. These photographs highlight the in-between spaces along the Pacific North Coast\, representing a shift from one state to another\, often feeling uncertain and detached from reality.\nThe opening reception for “Tides” will take place on Friday\, May 17th\, between 7 and 9 pm. Art enthusiasts and nature lovers alike are invited to experience Neal’s moving photography at Art Gallery Kimberley between May 16 – 26\, 2024. The exhibit welcomes visitors from Thursday through Sunday\, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm\, and accommodates appointments from Monday to Wednesday. Don’t miss this opportunity to take in the beauty and complexity of the moments in between. \nFor more information or to schedule a visit\, please contact Art Gallery Kimberley at 250-432-9225 or info@artgallerykimberley.com.

SUMMARY:AMY NELSON w/ GOOD GALS VINTAGE
DESCRIPTION:SAD GIRLS TOUR! \nAmy Nelson was born in the winter of 1992 to a loving mother and father. I spent my babyhood learning how to talk and walk\, but soon after\, I found in myself a desire to write stories and sentences about feelings and what happened in a day. I didn’t know by doing this people could call you a writer or a poet\, I just thought it was my little way of understanding the world as I saw it. Whether I was frightened or living in a yellow ball of sunshine\, I would write it down. If I didn’t write\, it was like lying to your loved one about where you ate your supper\, it made me feel miserable to be without the pen and paper.

SUMMARY:YUKON BLONDE W/ LAYTEN KRAMER
DESCRIPTION:“Out on the road you miss births\, funerals\, birthdays\, and back home over time even the strongest relationships come and go. This is all happening in our van somewhere on The Canadian Shield and all four of us have been through it.” \nThis sense of self imposed exile undoubtedly contributes to the uniquely expansive and ever changing sonic spectrum Yukon Blonde has refined over their years. \nYou can (and should) call them many things\, but never predictable or complacent. From the bouncy\, indie rock that defined their first half decade together – culminating in 2012’s Tiger Talk – through their experimentation with slick 80s inspired pop elements on 2015’s On Blonde to the seductive synth heavy psychedelic mood making of 2018’s Critical Hit – the bands back catalogue is incredibly diverse. \n“We’re a pop band\, so everything first is rooted in that\,” Innes offers\, “but when you’ve been together as long as we have\, and been through as much as we have as friends\, you have to find ways to protect yourselves and push forward together.”

SUMMARY:HARPOONIST
DESCRIPTION:THE HARPOONIST \nYou ought to meet Harpoonist. Known to family\, friends and hardcore fans as Shawn Hall. A harpoon/harmonica/harp virtuoso with a couple of decades in the hardcore\, blues-based rock and roll trenches. D’you remember The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer\, Shawn’s duo with Matt Rogers for 17 blistering years at festivals and concert halls and clubs large and small\, grungy and almost clean? \nWell\, Hall’s turned a new leaf.  Harpoonist — Hall’s non-de-plume and the name of the band — is something else again. New songs. New record. New gritty\, tough-assed swamp music with edge and off-the-wall lyrics. More importantly\, new musical partner-in-crime Big Sugar’s Gordie Johnson. Harpoonist (the band) is something else: Hall on harpoon\, and vocals of course\, and some keys. And Johnson\, Big Sugar’s Texas-based producer\, guitarist on nearly everything else. Plus\, Hall’s pal Jonas Shandel\, who also helped write the songs. \nHarpoonist is ready. There’s a new track ready to be released called “Good People” The made-in-Texas record is titled “Did We Come Here to Dance.” Due in February on Tonic Records label and on all the streaming services. \nOh\, and you almost certainly will dance. Promise.

The event will also include a Dark Arts Market featuring Little Magics\, Pupille\, sylvie Le sylvie\, and Völur Chainmaille. This is a rare opportunity to hear and see the craft of these talented musicians and artists all in one place. \nDancing Plague\, Total Chroma\, and Renonce are joining forces for a tour across Turtle Island ahead of their appearances at Verboden 2024 (May 9-12). This event will be a taste of what is to come at the seventh annual darkwave festival on Coast Salish territory (Vancouver\, BC). \nLocation: Oxygen Art Centre
Address: 320 Vernon St Unit-3\, Sinixt təmxʷúlaʔx (Nelson\, BC)
Date: Sunday May 5th\, 2024\nTime: EARLY SHOW Doors 7pm\, Show 8pm
Tickets: $15 advance (link below)\, $20 door\nhttps://restlessnites.com/events/dancingplaguewithguestsdarkartsmarket5may2024 \nMUSICIAN BIOS: \nDANCING PLAGUE: Portland\, OR’s Dancing Plague makes broodingly intense but surprisingly emotional dark electronic music. Since the solo project’s inception in 2015\, Dancing Plague has released four albums and four EPs\, solidifying them in the world of darkwave and body music. \nWords about new album\, out March 2024: On their 5th studio album “Elogium”\, Portland based electronic act Dancing Plague continues to flesh out and perfect their unique brand of crushing Darkwave. The album explores themes of loss\, regret\, rebirth and growth coupled with throbbing basslines\, rave synths\, and pounding drums. Dancing Plague balances aggressive waves of electronics with enough pop sensibilities and catchy hooks to be inviting to those new to the genre. \nBandcamp: www.dancingplaguemusic.bandcamp.com\nFacebook: www.facebook.com/dancingplaguemusic\nInstagram: @dancingplaguemusic \nPost-Punk.com single premiere: https://post-punk.com/portland-darkwave-project-dancing-plague-debuts-new-single-dreamless/ \nRENONCE: Renonce is a Montreal project of industrial/darkwave music created in 2021.  Their second album Nuisance sonore was produced by Annie-Claude Deschênes (Duchess Says\, Pypy) and mixed by the Toronto industrial duo Odonis Odonis. Noisier and more aggressive\, it will be released in April 2024 on Verboden x Negative Gain.  For fans of electronic saturation\, industrial noise and vocal fry. \nBandcamp:  https://renonce.bandcamp.com/album/nuisance-sonore\nInstagram: @renoncemtl \nTOTAL CHROMA: Total Chroma\, the project of Canadian minimal synth artist Isku Katerwol\, offers a creative fusion of Italo disco\, classic EBM\, minimal wave\, and post punk sounds among other styles. Katerwol combines diverse influences into a genre-defying hybrid. \nBandcamp: https://totalchroma.bandcamp.com/album/lapland\nInstagram: @totalchroma \nJAKOB: The intertwined circle and triangle is an ancient alchemical symbol representing a precise transmutation. The extension of the triangle’s points beyond the parameters of the circle indicates that the reaction will take place free from coercion or control\, where the radius of the transformation is wholly dependent upon the strength of the reaction. Extending this incantation to the transformative potential of music\, it is also clear that carefully curated audio atmospheres have the capacity to provoke captivating responses among audiences. \nInstagram: @jakobsounds\nSoundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/jakob-sounds \nDARK ARTS MARKET VENDORS: \nLITTLE MAGICS\n@_littlemagics \nPUPILLE\n@p.upille \nSYLVIE LE SYLVIE\n@sylvielesylvie \nVÖLUR CHAINMAILLE\n@volur.chainmaille \n-No forms of bigotry\, harassment or hate will be tolerated\n-Consent is mandatory\n-Celebrate responsibly\n-Please contact us if you have any accessibility requirements and would like to attend\n-Capacity is limited\, please arrive early \n#darkwave #ebm #industrial #synthpunk #verboden #goth

SUMMARY:Lands Far Away – Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us @ The Langham in Kaslo\, on Friday May 10 from 7-9 pm for the opening of ‘Lands Far Away’ by Nelson based artist Abby Wilson. Come and meet the artist and enjoy an evening of art with us! This event is free and open to everyone.\n“Lands Far Away ” pushes the boundaries between imagination and reality\, stretching familiar Kootenay landscapes into deeper fantasy worlds. Nelson artist Abby Wilson gathers reference material while hiking in the mountains\, focusing on capturing local landscapes that remind her of JRR Tolkein’s poetic descriptions of Middle Earth. Wilson’s photos and Tolkein’s phrases are used to prompt Midjourney Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, creating unique landscapes fed by multiple imaginations. Wilson revises the generated landscapes\, and then paints them in her own style.
