SUMMARY:A Play on Birds Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Don Konrad considers himself a cartoonist at heart. He’s been sketching and painting since elementary school\, taking his inspiration from nature\, people and his life experiences. Birders and art-lovers alike will enjoy Konrad’s whimsical bird artwork now on display at the Nelson Public Library. \n  \nAfter many decades of creating art\, Don Konrad still has a sense of wonder about the power of imagination in creating images. “I’ve always been fascinated and amused by the thought that they come out of the end of a pencil\, pen or brush\, if you let it”\, says Don. “Creating the birds as caricatures was fun\, but the challenge was giving each one its own personality.” \n  \nThe illustrations are rendered in casein\, an opaque medium\, and traditional watercolours. They were originally created as part of a collaborative book project\, A Play on Birds\, between Don Konrad and his daughter Erica Konrad. After the illustrations were created\, Erica provided the corresponding text for the book\, like a field guide\, but for imaginary birds. “Whether it’s in the name of the bird itself or truths hidden in the description\, these birds harbour secrets on how they connect to other real-world birds- a treasure hunt of sorts” says Don. \n  \nDon has exhibited in many Canadian galleries and other public spaces and currently mentors and tutors in watercolour painting at The Narrows Art Retreat in Grohman Narrows. \n  \nThe show continues until the end of December and copies of the book A Play on Birds will be available to purchase at the Nelson Library.

SUMMARY:Candy Bones Theatre: Ideas Bobert
DESCRIPTION:From award winning creator Candice Roberts comes the heart fluttering physical comedy Ideas Bobert. Bobert is a silent character\, a la Charlie Chaplin\, who has a little red bird for a heart. His story asks us\, what happens if we are to deny our deepest dreams and desires? Teetering on the brink of absolute failure\, love-sick Bobert discovers his heart to be more important than he knew. With vintage silent film styling\, shadow puppetry\, stop motion animation projections\, tap dance and vintage music\, the world of Ideas Bobert is rich with magic and creativity. Filled with preposterous situations and dreamy surrealism\, the show is like Ginger Rogers meets Mr. Bean on the Muppet show\, as Ideas Bobert dances with the hilarious and absurd.“Charming and skillfully performed. Putting Ideas Bobert on your list would be a good idea!” ★★★★ –CBC“Ideas Bobert is a leap into a silent-movie that you will be very reluctant to ever leave. Heartwarming and hilarious\, inventive and inspiring. Truly the kind of theatre magic you can never plan for but only hope for\, and will leave you with your eyes popping and your heart flying high.”– Kevin Reid\, The VisitoriumWatch the trailer https://youtu.be/CsEKPpUnVXE.Learn more about Candy Bones (Candice Roberts) here https://candy-bones.com.Ideas Bobert is whimsy and fiction\, but for its creator Candice Roberts\, it resonates with her truth. Common amongst many comedy artists\, Candice has struggled with anxiety and depression. She claims that clown school saved her life. For her\, the art of clowning encompasses such fundamental life-skills as connection with oneself and community\, creative communication and of becoming comfortable in the discomfort that is the unknown.Clowning for her celebrates the multi-facets of what it means to be human. It is the investigation of what is absurd or confounding about ourselves and society. It is the sharing of vulnerability and honesty and the dissolving of shame through exposure. Through Ideas Bobert\, she hopes to inspire a deep belly laugh\, a tender tear and a reminder of how important it is to listen with our hearts and to be in touch with our creative selves.Candy Bones Theatre has toured all over North American with her award winning solo shows. She specializes in original immersive theatrical productions and creativity education. She brings her passion for interweaving artistic disciplines such as physical theatre\, music\, mask\, puppetry\, clown and dance to create stories that explore the humour\, the heartbreak\, the trials and the tribulations of being a human in this world. This is a 45-minute family show best suited to kids 4-11 years of age and their families.
