SUMMARY:Kootenay Chamber Players - Songs of the New World
DESCRIPTION:Join the Kootenay Chamber Strings for a radiant afternoon of music celebrating Antonín Dvořák’s time in the New World. Written during his stay in the United States in the 1890s\, Dvořák’s String Quartet in F major\, Op. 96 (“American”) and String Quintet in E-flat major\, Op. 97 overflow with the composer’s signature lyricism\, rhythmic vitality\, and heartfelt warmth. \nInspired by the open landscapes of America and infused with echoes of his Bohemian homeland\, these two masterworks capture a unique moment of musical cross-pollination—where folk melodies\, spirituals\, and Dvořák’s own deeply rooted sense of melody come together in perfect harmony. \nThis intimate concert offers a rare opportunity to hear both of Dvořák’s “American” works side by side—an afternoon of glowing string sound\, storytelling\, and spirited ensemble playing. \nAbout the Kootenay Chamber Players \nThe Kootenay Chamber Players bring together five accomplished musicians who share a deep love of collaboration\, creativity\, and community. Drawing on diverse musical backgrounds—from classical and folk traditions to jazz and contemporary styles—the group brings an open-hearted approach to performance that reflects their Kootenay roots: down-to-earth\, adventurous\, and passionate about sharing their craft. \nThe ensemble features Natasha Hall and Spring Burke on violins\, Martine denBok on viola\, Jeff Faragher on cello\, and Rob Fahie on double bass. Together\, they create performances that are rich in warmth\, connection\, and joy—music made by friends\, for friends.

SUMMARY:Tenise Marie Album Launch @ Key City Theatre w/ Aline Deanna
DESCRIPTION:7:30 pm MST \nPresented by Key City Theatre: \nTenise Marie is a Canadian songwriter\, vocalist\, multi-instrumentalist\, performer\, and recording artist based in Nelson\, British Columbia. \nGrowing up\, her voice was guided by bold female singer songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez. Throughout her musical life\, she has fallen in love with Soul\, R&B\, Gospel\, Jazz\, and most recently has begun exploring and reclaiming the sounds of her West Asian roots. Tenise’s music weaves together each of these influences\, while remaining focused on lyrics that cause us to examine our own humanity. \nTenise’s original music pairs soulful vocals with acoustic instruments\, crafting a unique blend of Western and Eastern folk music\, reflective of her own mixed European and Assyrian heritage. As Olivia Herring from Music Mecca described Tenise’s ballad “Drawn to You” from her 2021 album Storm: “Watching Marie perform is an emotional experience…coming of age\, falling in love\, and exploring the world are just the surface level of inspiration in Marie’s pieces”. \nA storyteller and traveller at heart\, Tenise is inspired by adventure and connection. Her songs deliver folky nostalgia and romance\, offering “jazzy folk-pop ambience…luminous vocals and clear-eyed\, confessional lyrics” (Darryl Sterdan\, Tinnitist). \nTenise Marie performs the range of human emotion through story and song\, navigating heartbreak and humour with insightful lyrics\, travel anecdotes\, and unique musical landscapes. \nHer new album\, Off The Record\, was recorded and released in July 2025 with support from Creative BC and the Province of British Columbia. \nWith Off The Record\, “Tenise Marie opens up a deeply personal chapter\, one that traces emotional vulnerability\, cultural reconnection\, and the quiet unraveling of perfectionism. As the title track to her new album\, Off The Record doesn’t just set the tone\, it is the tone. Honest\, reflective\, and soul-stirring” (Mischa Plouffe\, Buzz Music). \nThe record features a collection of songs written for her Research & Creation songwriting project with the Canada Council for the Arts\, inspired by her experience travelling to the Assyrian homeland in Iraq with GISHRU: Bridge to Assyria. \nOpener: Aline Deanna \n~ Soulful Country/Folk songs with catchy melodies and cheeky lyrics ~ \nAline aims to capture the present moment with poeticism and humor all wrapped up in a bow of timeless country melodies. She is original and cunning in her songwriting and lends a nod to ever inspiring songwriters such as John Hartford and Lucinda Williams. Drawing you in with her candid lyrics she can tell an entire story in one sentence with her unique voice. Inspired by the likes of Emmylou Harris and Gillian Welch the spirit of old time country music rings loud in her singing and songwriting and is uplifted with a modern dose of Americana. \nAline has performed at the Oregon Country Fair\, Kluane Bluegrass Festival – Yukon\, Whitefish Songwriters Festival – Montana\, Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival – Austin TX\, Tiny Lights Festival – Ymir BC\, Woodstove Festival – Cumberland BC. She has showcased at Folk Alliance International (2025) & Your Roots Are Showing Ireland (2024) and tours frequently across Canada and Europe. She will be releasing her first LP “Wild Rose & Salt Water” on September 19th\, 2025 which will be accompanied with a four week tour in Germany\, Belgium\, Poland and The Netherlands.

SUMMARY:1910: The Uncovering Revelstoke Premiere
DESCRIPTION:1910: The Uncovering \nSoon after its World Premiere at the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival on November 12\, Revelstoke will get to see the new\, stunning documentary 1910 – The Uncovering. Principal photography for the 27-minute Film took place in July and December of 2024\, showcasing key local locations: Revelstoke Railway Museum\, Parks Canada\, Rogers Pass\, and Revelstoke Museum & Archives. In addition to surprising Vancouver connections\, the film includes insightful interviews with local experts Tomo Fujimura\, Cathy English\, John Woods\, Sylvain Hebert\, Doug Meyer\, Ed Palasz\, Karen Matthews\, and a cameo appearance by Taiki Fujimura. During production\, the team was surprised by a 1910 victim’s great-grandson’s first-ever visit to the sites\, from Tokyo. \nTickets are just $10\, with all proceeds going to The Revelstoke Railway Museum and Revelstoke Museum & Archives. Many of the Film participants will be present to discuss with the audience afterwards. SUMMARY:Trail: Metropolitan Opera's La Bohème
DESCRIPTION:La Bohème (Puccini) – Encore\nSaturday January 10 9:55am \nWith its enchanting setting and spellbinding score\, the world’s most popular opera is as timeless as it is heartbreaking. Franco Zeffirelli’s picture-perfect production brings 19th-century Paris to the Met stage as Puccini’s young friends and lovers navigate the joy and struggle of bohemian life. Sopranos Juliana Grigoryan\, Angel Blue\, and Aleksandra Kurzak trade off as the feeble seamstress Mimì\, opposite tenors Freddie De Tommaso\, Stephen Costello\, Adam Smith\, and Long Long as the ardent poet Rodolfo. \nThe Royal Theatre in Trail broadcasts the Metropolitan Opera Encore performances from New York City in glorious HD on the big screen. Encore shows are captured during the live production and shown with us\, at a later date. The Royal Theatre plays host to hundreds of people who travel from miles around to attend this wonderful and highly sought after production. \nOne of only a handful of theatres providing this service\, and the only one in the Kootenay’s\, the Royal Theatre is proud to have the MET Opera on their screen\, and extend their invitation to all of you to come enjoy. \n  \nTickets: https://ticketing.useast.veezi.com/sessions/?siteToken=td0z6g5kym5m2hcxmeb14jxg9w

SUMMARY:Trail: The Fretless with Madeleine Roger
DESCRIPTION:The Trail & District Arts Council presents Juno award-winners The Fretless with Madeleine Roger at The Bailey Theatre on Tuesday\, January 27 at 7:30 pm as part of the Performing Arts Trail series. \nThe Fretless is a Canadian string group reimagining folk music for today. With deep traditional roots and a modern edge\, they blend old-school sounds with fresh energy—making traditional music feel new\, exciting\, and totally relevant. \nThis quartet pushes the boundaries of what a string quartet can do. With a distinctly rich and multi-layered sound\, they transform fiddle tunes and folk melodies into intricate\, beautiful\, high-energy arrangements. \nThe Fretless is Trent Freeman (Fiddle/Viola)\, Karrnnel Sawitsky (Fiddle/Viola)\, Ben Plotnick (Fiddle/Viola)\, and Eric Wright (Cello).\nAwards:\n“Waterbound” in 2012: Winner of Instrumental Album of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards (WCMA) and Instrumental Group of the Year and Ensemble of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards (CFMA).\n“The Fretless” in 2014: Winner of Instrumental Album of the Year (WCMA) and Ensemble of the Year (CFMA).\n“Live from the Art Farm” in 2019: Winner of Instrumental Album of the Year (CFMA).\n“Bird’s Nest” In 2017: Winner of the JUNO award for Instrumental Album of The Year. \nThe Fretless are just as likely to perform at a concert hall (most recently\, halls such as the Royal Glasgow Concert Hall in Scotland\, The Colon Philharmonie in Germany\, or the National Arts Centre in Ottawa) as a folk festival (such as Vancouver Island Folk Fest\, Winnipeg Folk Fest\, Memoirs et Racines). They can be found playing a pub one day and a chamber music festival the next. \nThe band is taking their innovative and vibrant version of a string quartet to countless corners of the musical world\, bringing audiences on a journey that transcends genre\, defies stereotypes\, and can only be described as The Fretless. \n“It isn’t often that you come across instrumental music so beautiful that each track feels like brush strokes in a piece of artwork.” – Ben Ray\, Cherwell \nJoining them on this tour for a night of passionately expressive music is incredible singer-songwriter Madeleine Roger\, whose lyrical prowess and breathtaking melodies linger long after they are sung. Her regular collaborations with The Fretless include live performances and recordings as a vocalist and co-writer.\nMadeleine has toured extensively across Canada\, Europe\, USA\, and the UK sharing her music live at the Winnipeg Folk Festival\, Shetland Island Folk Festival\, Vancouver Island Music Festival\, Stan Rogers Folk Festival\, Summerfolk Festival of Arts and Crafts\, among others. She has been nominated for awards as English Songwriter of the Year (2020 Canadian Folk Music Awards) and Producer of the Year 2019 Western Canadian Music Awards). \nSingle tickets are $30. Under 30 years is $15. Common Access Card is $15. \nAll tickets available online at trail-arts.com\, by phone at 250-368-9669\, and in person at the Bailey Box Office at 1501 Cedar Ave.\, Trail. \nThis performance is made possible thanks to our sponsors Century 21 (Kootenay Homes Ltd.\,)\, Pharmasave Trail\, TECK Trail Operations and the support of our funders the BC Arts Council\, BC Live Performance Network\, and the Government of Canada. We also gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia.
