The Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre hosts Revelstoke’s only public art gallery. The gallery has one main open gallery space with three adjoining side galleries. Throughout each year we showcase the work of several different artists in both solo shows and group shows with a variety of different mediums. Exhibitions change monthly!

The rest of the centre is filled with workshops, artist studios, a woodshop and a pottery studio!

2 STUDIO CONNEXION ART GALLERY

Studio Connexion Art Gallery is nested in the heart of Nakusp. Anne-Élizabeth Béliveau is owner and curator. Her love of visual arts brought her to this venture 16 years ago. She organizes seven shows for the Summer Exhibitions Series from mid-May to October, plus a Winter Group Show. From July 31 to August 17, artist Stéphanie Gauvin from Rossland will be featured just in time for the Columbia Basin Culture Tour. Her colourful landscapes are often executed en plein air. Proud to represent this talented artist from the West Kootenay. A “must see” while in Nakusp.

4 WHITE OTTER DESIGN CO & THE AUNTE

BEADWORK; QUILLWORK; ARTIST RESIDENCY

Jaymie Campbell is an Anishnaabe artist and writer from Curve Lake First Nation and currently resides on unceded Sinixt territory in New Denver.

Jaymie is the designer behind White Otter Design Co., which incorporates traditional artistry techniques with contemporary and personal style. She aims to explore connection to land and culture through beadwork, writing, fashion and visual arts. Her work is inspired by her Anishnaabe roots, the land and her family.

In 2024, Jaymie also founded the Aunte Indigenous Residency to support artists and writers whose practices embody contemporary and traditional forms of artistic expression. The program will offer artists-in-residence programming, but also mentorship, skills and development training and entrepreneurship supports. The Aunte is committed to strengthening the Indigenous art and small-business sector by supporting artists and entrepreneurs in capacity building and expanding their skills and knowledge within their practices to build strong authenticity, integrity and community.

Visitors will be able to visit the new artists’ studio, gallery and residency accommodation space.

5 CANCELLED: HIDDEN GARDEN GALLERY

COMMUNITY GALLERY; MULTIMEDIA ARTISTS

The Hidden Garden Gallery was founded in 2000 to serve the community of New Denver and the West Kootenay. We have a working board of nine directors and many generous volunteers from our community that keep our little gallery going year to year. Each director hosts one or more of the 10-week-long art shows of local/regional artists and groups each summer.

We host a variety of artists who practice in many different mediums, including photography, painting, sculpture and textiles. We help and guide emerging artists showing for the first time in a gallery through the process of putting a show together, and encourage them to sit their show so that when you visit our gallery, you will have a chance to meet each artist with their work. We also host more experienced and seasoned professionals in the visual arts, and learn from them in turn. Every week features a different artist’s work.

The gallery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with new shows running each Tuesday through Sunday. Our summer season kicks off in late June and continues through to early September.

6 CANCELLED: ART IN THE KOHAN

STROLLING GARDEN; PAINTING; CARVING; DRAWING

The Kohan Reflection Garden welcomes Columbia Basin Culture Tour visitors to wander through the garden, enjoying its beauty while visiting with a dozen local artists who will be set up around the garden during the tour to share and display their various talents. Local musicians will rove busker-style, providing short sets of entertainment, while two food vendors nourish with sweet and savoury snacks.

The Kohan Reflection Garden is a horticultural gem, a living piece of art, in the heart of the West Kootenay. Established in 1989 to commemorate Japanese Canadians interned in the village of New Denver, the garden incorporates history, human rights issues and artistic values in its design. The centre of the garden is the teahouse, built in the 1940s by the Japanese community.

The visitor is invited through a Japanese entrance gate into a secluded garden, enclosed by a hemlock hedge, and then is led along pathways to a magnificent view of Slocan Lake and surrounding mountains. The garden features various “rooms” enhanced with Japanese elements such as stone lanterns, ponds, a dry streambed and bridge, flowering cherry trees and a ceremonial bell. While blooms and colours change with the seasons, form and texture predominate.

7 SANDON MUSEUM

MUSEUM; MINING HISTORY

Welcome to our fascinating museum in the ghost town of Sandon! We look forward to taking you on a journey into Sandon’s past, introducing you to some wild and wonderful characters along the way while you enjoy our fabulous collection of artifacts!

The beautiful brick museum was built in 1900 and the large glass windows overlook Carpenter Creek and the forested hillsides beyond. Our enthusiastic staff have a wide and exciting variety of historic stories to share. You can explore the townsite after and marvel at the magnitude of human endeavour.

8 SILVERSMITH POWER AND LIGHT CORP.

HERITAGE MUSEUM; HYDROELECTRIC STATION

The historic Silversmith Generating Station dates back to the days of Tesla, Edison, Westinghouse and Pelton. The operation has worked continuously 24/7 since April 5, 1897. It is recognized on the world stage and was inducted into the World Hydro Hall of Fame in 2021. Visitors can view this technological marvel in the historic mining community of Sandon. Admission is free, donations kindly accepted. Interpretation is excellent. Today this historic facility generates certified green electricity for the Nakusp region.
