56 DOUG AUSTIN

WOOD BOATS PLUS

I was trained as a cabinetmaker and worked in cabinet shops for 10 years before shifting over to on-site high-end finish carpentry, which I have been doing for 25 or 30 years.

So far what I have found that brings me the most creative joy is building highly efficient human-powered small boats, in wood, epoxy and automotive finishes, patiently honing the details to make them beautiful, as well as easy to take care of. Come see….

I get maximal creative pleasure from applying my attention to detail to rowing-boat designs, which have been developed organically over the centuries, designs that have been modified in increments by the very people who were using these boats, knowledge passed through generations long before the concepts of marketing for the sole purpose of sales or built-in obsolescence.

The designs I am currently working with I have chosen for their superb handling on the usually wavy, wind-tossed surfaces of any water we might want to use a boat on.

The boat in these images is a Whitehall of a particularly easy-to-propel design. Even rowing in three-foot waves, I’ve found this boat keeps you dry! I work with tried-and-true designs of human-powered boats and am currently all about the efficiency of rowing a light boat such as this with the massive efficiency of a professionally designed sliding-seat rowing rig.

57 KATE ANDERSON

PASTEL PAINTINGS & LARGE MIXED-MEDIA PAINTINGS OF WATERFALLS & MOUNTAINS

I’m excited to be part of the Columbia Basin Culture Tour again this year. My work is mostly soft pastels (with some oils and mixed media), with all paintings framed with acid-free mats and framing materials. I like to pay particular attention to the play of light and shadows and I’m inspired by the beauty that is reflected around me. I have made my home in Nelson for the past 14 years and I live in a co-housing community. This has allowed me to settle into my creative expression with painting, gardening and living close to nature. Along with enjoying my exhibit, you are welcome to explore the surrounding garden areas with ponds, flowers and trees. This is a garden/art experience good for the whole family!

Before arriving in Nelson, I lived in Canmore, Alberta, where I was an active member of the Canmore Artists and Artisan Guild for many years.

58 ETCETERA

REPURPOSED JEWELLERY; FABRIC ACCESSORIES & DECOR; FOUND-OBJECT JEWELLERY

Having tried my hand at many creative pursuits, today my focus is on sewing and repurposing ordinary items into whimsical jewellery and handmade gifts.

Many years ago, I came upon a box of old keys at an estate sale. I was captivated by their shapes and the stories they could tell. I wanted to transform these beauties into something that could again be appreciated. The idea of them becoming a favourite necklace had my heart racing.

From old keys, I transformed grandma’s buttons into charm bracelets. Broken watches became earrings, crystal chandeliers turned into amulets, and old pennies became birth-year keepsakes.

A former quilter, I have turned countless pieces of fabric into special keepsakes. Never to let a scrap go to waste, I challenge myself to piece and create items far beyond quilts, such as a tea cozy, eyeglass case or wall hanging.

When you visit, I will be sewing scraps together to eventually stitch into finished products. You will meet Clara, my 1951 Singer Featherweight sewing machine. I will have on hand finished fabric items and repurposed jewellery to purchase. I can even make some custom penny earrings for you in the years of your choosing.

I have named my shop “etcetera” because I never know what I will find to transform. I look forward to meeting you and sharing my repurposing passion.

60 JAN KOZLOWSKI

PHOTOGRAPHY; ANTIQUE DOLL PORTRAITURE

My photography consists of portraits of dolls in-situ found in antique stores and flea markets throughout the US and Canada. These portraits inspire a narrative that leads me to explore the dolls’ histories and their stories.

I try to capture the essence of the doll’s past in contrast with its discarded present predicament, awaiting its next stage of purpose.

61 DUPAS DESIGN

FUNCTIONAL; SCULPTURAL; CERAMICS; BOTANICALS

Through the process of hand-building, coiling and slip-casting, my clay sculptures and functional work allow me to express my animated view of the world. I am fascinated by exotic seed pods and flowers, which has led to an exploration of texture, shape and colour. My botanical designs are not made with the intent of reproducing the actual flora, but rather as a reference and inspiration to create hybrid sculptural forms and other worldly botanical curiosities.

SCULPTURE; MULTIMEDIA; PHOTOGRAPHY; CERAMICS

Grant has produced work in sign painting, screen printing, drawing and collaging. However, his recent creations include a collection of eclectic multimedia box art and printmaking.

His artistic approach is guided by ideas and inspirations that come straight from the pieces and trinkets he constantly accumulates and is surrounded by. Each piece finds its way into one of several projects he works on at any given time.

Grant’s formal training included sign painting at BCIT, Burnaby; Emily Carr School of Art, Vancouver; Malaspina College of Art, Vancouver Island; and Oxygen Art Centre, Nelson.

During 50 years of dedicated practice, he has produced many pieces of varied work, usually characterized as quirky and unconventional.

66 ANGEL AUDREY AT J.B. FLETCHER STORE

BATIK-PAINTING DEMONSTRATION

I am Angel Audrey and I basically grew up outdoors, developing a great love of nature and animals and drawing what I saw. I obtained a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and an education degree from the University of Manitoba. I have been an international art teacher and, while living in Asia, studied batik in Bali and fell in love with the process.

In batik, beeswax is drawn onto silk or canvas to block out colour. Dye is used to fill in areas of colour and then the process is repeated as desired. The beeswax is then ironed out to produce artwork that has a transparent quality similar to stained glass.

I have experienced many sorrows, but I want my artwork to reflect the beauty of everyday life and the world around me. My work shows how I see the world and what it means for me to be alive in this place at this time. Creating art is a way to make decisions, problem solve and understand my place in the world. It is a way for me to tell my own story and has helped me shape my identity.

I live on Kootenay Lake near Kaslo, and hold art classes for people dealing with grief and for people wanting to learn the process of painting with batik.
