74 CRESTON MUSEUM

MUSEUM; HISTORY; TOURS; PROGRAMS

If you’re wondering how Creston came to be what it is today, you’ve come to the right place. From the forestry, mining and agriculture of the pioneer years; to the people who continue to build our communities today; to the connections between Creston and the rest of the Kootenays—if you’ve got questions, we’ve got answers.

We can explain how Creston got its wacky time zone. We can tell you about the steamship that became a tractor (sort of), the first airplane to land in Creston, and the teacher who refused to be fired. Speaking of “great” stories, there’s “The Great Railway Race” and the “Great Creston Bank Robbery.” And have you heard the one about the imaginary student in grade 13?

Really, we’re not making this up. Why would we? Truth is so much better than fiction.

So come on in. After all, there’s no time like the present to discover the past.

77 ART BARN STUDIO

MIXED MEDIA; PAPER MAKING; MARBELLING; QUILTING

Welcome to the Art Barn Studio, where creativity and culture converge in a vibrant exploration of the arts. As an artist and art instructor, I am passionate about guiding both young minds and adult learners through the fascinating world of artistic expression. The studio, often referred to as an “artist incubator,” is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to nurturing budding and seasoned artists alike. Here, we dive into the dynamic interplay of materials, from discovering how different paints interact to creating unique textures and even sewing paper. One of the studio’s unique features is the Hollander paper beater, which allows us to delve into the art of papermaking and sculpted pulp creations. Teaching art, especially to children, is the highlight of my work, offering endless joy and surprises. Join us for the Culture Tour at the Art Barn Studio and ignite your passion for art through hands-on learning and innovative techniques that promise to enrich and inspire!

79 JENNY STEENKAMP

PAINTINGS

I was born and raised in Namibia, Africa. We immigrated to Canada in 2009, landed in Creston, and still love this beautiful valley.

I got my love for flowers from my mother, as she was forever battling to grow flowers in a very dry country.

My paints and canvas are all artist- and museum-quality, as I love the pure colours that you need for flowers. I paint landscapes, portraits and figures as well. All my flowers come out of my own garden.

Why do I paint? For me it is always a challenge to learn more, it gives me so much pleasure to see the painting develop, it heals my mind, and it keeps me sane from all the memories.

I cannot imagine being without my paints, brushes and garden. Luckily I have a wonderful family that always encourages me in my painting journeys, and it brings good energy to all.

80 EVERSFIELD CERAMICS

DEMONSTRATIONS; SALES; POTTERY; SCULPTURE

This year Eversfield Ceramics, in conjunction with the Culture Tour, will be hosting the first annual Creston Clay Fest on Saturday, Aug. 10. The festival will feature a collection of local potters and ceramic artists. There will be demonstrations showing various clay-making techniques and you can try your hand at throwing on the potter’s wheel or hand building. We will have a children’s table and encourage everyone to plan to get their hands dirty. Visit clayfest.ca for a schedule of events for the day, including raku firing demos and friendly throw-down competitions. Refreshments will be available on site.

There will be a large cross-section of work to view and purchase, from the basic mug to large one-off sculptures, all made using different firing processes and multiple different types of glaze finishes. The artists will be available to chat and give insights into their making processes. There will be beautiful pieces of the artists’ work to purchase so you can take home a souvenir of the day.

Set in the outstanding Lister scenery, looking out to the Skimmerhorn Mountains 10 minutes south of Creston. We hope this will be an entertaining and educational day for all who attend.

Address:

81 LYNNE MIZERA

MIXED MEDIA; PORTRAITS; FLOWERS

My name is Lynne Mizera and I am a self-taught mixed-media artist living on my one-acre property in Creston. I have a passion for using multiple media to create both visual and tactile layers and textures in my work. My work is known for its bold, bright colour palette and simple shapes and I endeavour to convey the emotional energy behind the image that I am trying to capture. I paint mostly florals and female faces and currently I am on an exploration of painting the female face in my own unique, abstracted style, with a focus on the eyes and that part of a woman she hides from the world. I am opening my studio to the public for this event to share with you my passion for what I do and to allow you to see how and where this artist creates. It has taken me 12 years of intense study and practice to arrive at the place I am in today, and I have come to realize that I LOVE the way I paint, and I would love to share with you my version of beautifully different.

82 EARTH WIND & FIBRE DESIGNS: ANNE FETTERLY

FIBRE ART; NATURAL DYES; SCULPTURE; UPCYCLING

Anne Fetterly’s sustainable art practice explores various processes involving natural and synthetic dyes, cloth, paper and repurposed materials. She dyes silk, linen and cotton and then designs and sews the cloth into a selection of one-of-a-kind scarves and wearable art. She further incorporates her environmental interests by upcycling leather to create a unique array of repurposed purses and bags. In addition, Anne collects and assembles vintage and cast-off materials to create interesting 3D sculptures called “Anne’s Curiosities.”

Anne graduated from the Alberta University of the Arts in 2010 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (in Fibre). She has taken part in several national and international group shows and is represented in some Canadian galleries. She currently lives in the beautiful Creston Valley, practising and promoting textile work and its related processes within contemporary art today.

During the Culture Tour, she will have block-printing demos and an indigo dye pot going.
