66: MELLOWOOD STUDIO & ART GALLERY (VAL VAN DER POEL)

Watercolour; Multimedia artist

Although primarily a watercolour artist, I also work in acrylics, paper quilling, mixed media and pen and ink. I am continually exploring new techniques and styles. Subject matter ranges from realistic landscapes to straight abstract, imaginary scenes to fantasy to still life. My ideas come from the world around me—the birds and flowers in my yard and the views around the Creston Valley—and some straight from my imagination. I don’t worry about “meaning” in my art—I paint what makes me feel good!

68: THE GARDEN STUDIO (LAURA LEEDER)

Mixed-media painting; Greeting cards; Gift items

Laura’s mixed-media paintings open the heart to the delight resulting from an intimate connection with the outdoors. Gardens, birds and surrounding landscape are created through collage and techniques reminiscent of art deco and stained glass. Her stylized paintings sparkle with lighthearted and expressive celebrations of nature, and often include a touch of whimsy.

69: EILEEN GIDMAN

Watercolour painting; Textile cards

Eileen’s watercolour paintings often begin on location and, as she lives in the Kootenays, the subject matter is to do with nature or the iconic scenes of the area. Similarly, when Eileen paints with dyes on textiles, the images she depicts are to do with Kootenay life. To complete her textile pieces, she adds thread sketching details, resulting in unique textile cards that can be easily framed.

74: OUT BEYOND (ALISON BJORKMAN)

Wheel-thrown functional pottery

My work is functional first, enhanced by the beauty of glazes based on chemistry. I care very much how well something works—how balanced the handle, the right volume of liquid or food, the right weight when full to lift it. I want the user to enjoy and be inspired and enlivened by using a beautiful object in everyday life. To me it is what makes life more—more fun, more full, more cool, more meaningful… I make each piece, every time with intention. No two will be the same—non-identical, unique.

75: LYNNE MIZERA

Mixed media; Acrylic painting; Painting demonstrations

Lynne Mizera is a full-time mixed-media artist living in Erickson in the Creston Valley. Creative all her life, Lynne discovered painting when she turned 50 and has devoted the past 10 years to honing her skills and developing her artistic voice. Lynne’s work is impressionistic, bright and colourful and full of energy and simple shapes as she strives to capture that essence behind her subject. Known for her mixed-media landscapes and flower paintings, Lynne is currently diving deeply into portrait painting, especially the female face. Always fascinated by Picasso and his use of colour and shape, she began trying out these techniques until her own unique style emerged. As well as painting with acrylics, she is now exploring the use of different media, like collage, watercolour and pan pastels, to see how the introduction of these media change the emotional response to her portraits.

76: EVERSFIELD CERAMICS (DAVID BARNES)

Ceramics; Original; Contemporary; Demonstrations

Whether I am labelled a potter, sculptor or artist, it is irrelevant to the work that I create. Over the past years, I have been and still am all these things. Ceramics for me has always been about the whole process, from concept and design to production—this is what defines the craftsman. I have never been one to feel tied to limited designs or one process; for me it is a life of constant exploration and the development of new ideas, pushing the material and my abilities to their limits in the pursuit of the new and unexplored, the ultimate consideration being the aesthetic and statement made by the end result.
