10: LINDA KOPE

Watercolour painting

My painting began with an evening art class 30 years ago in Banff/Canmore. From then I’ve dabbled in acrylics and pen and ink but always end up back with the looseness of watercolour. Landscapes have expanded to florals and animals. The best part of art is the creativity, the marrying of colour and learning from like-minded people.

12: DAN SALEKIN PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography; Printmaker; Landscape; Wildlife

The rugged geography of the Kootenay area has a unique beauty and peacefulness that I am trying to capture in pictures. As a printmaker, I reproduce pictures or moments on fine-art paper. As not all prints are successful the first time, I may have to go back and adjust in software, use a different type of paper and, in some cases, I have to go back and retake the picture. If the image is based on a season, I may have to wait up to a year before the next opportunity to retake the shot. My gallery is a way to share the final prints in a meaningful and lasting way. During the Columbia Basin Culture Tour, I’ll demonstrate printing and share stories about my adventures and how I take the pictures and process them for printing. Take a hike!

17: MIRJA VAHALA

Acrylic landscape painting

My favourite themes to paint are trees, forests, waterfalls and pathways, which, for me, symbolize connection and passage. Through my paintings, I hope to provide an awareness that we are a part of nature’s energy and wisdom. I believe that all art enriches life and that includes the making of art. The act of creating is important for our lives, for our well-being and even for our awareness. Because of this belief, I love to encourage artists in their unique art process.

18: METALICART (LISA HUTH)

Blacksmithing; Welding; Metalwork; Anvil

Lisa was born and raised in the Okanagan, where she discovered a love for metalwork. She studied welding at Okanagan University in Kelowna. She also took instruction under Master Blacksmith Joe Delisimunovic in Vernon. Then in 2003, Lisa started her own business. Lisa also collaborated with Ted Howell on a few projects and learned a great deal from him. Lisa was asked to start up an introduction to blacksmithing program at Okanagan University and greatly appreciated her time there. Later in 2015 after starting a family, Lisa and her husband had a strong desire to raise their children in a smaller town, which led them to the Kootenays. They now live on a small acreage on the outskirts of Castlegar. Lisa finds inspiration from nature, the beautiful curves in plants and the unique details of animals. She loves the challenge that metal provides and the huge satisfaction of bending and forming it to her desired shape.

19: BARBARA LEGG

Acrylic painting

Acrylic is my preferred medium. I like to use vibrant colours to create the mood of a painting. Animals are some of my favourite subjects and I find comical and whimsical ways to include them in my art. Many of my recent paintings have been inspired by my participation in several musical groups in the community. Nature offers so many ideas for my landscapes depicting Kootenay life as it changes with seasons. I hope the viewer experiences an emotional connection with my art.

23: WALTER KANIGAN

Wood-crafting

Doukhobors have practised the skill of wood-crafting throughout their history, from Russia, Ukraine and Georgia to their arrival in Canada. These skills have been passed down from generation to generation. As a second-generation Canadian Doukhobor whose family immigrated to Canada in 1899, I inherited my passion for wood-crafting from my father at an early age. Throughout the years, I have designed and created dining tables, benches, hope chests and keepsake boxes, inspired by the art of craftsmanship. Using local wood from my native Kootenay region, I select pieces with striking grain signatures for every project. Because each wood grain is different, each craft is unique. I hope you enjoy my work for generations!
