The perennial favourite is back at the Creston Museum!
The Old-Fashioned Tea is a wonderful way to step back in time for an afternoon.
Join our costumed staff and special guests from Creston’s past on the Museum’s
shaded patio. We’ll be serving all your favourites – the dainty sandwiches, delicious
squares and cookies, and your choice of tea or lemonade.
“This is delightful,” said a guest at last year’s tea. “I look forward to the Old-Fashioned
Tea every year.” Each year, several guests get into the spirit of the event by coming in
period costume themselves.
As always, the Old-Fashioned Tea is on the second Saturday of August – that’s August 14
this year. We can accommodate groups of any size, so call your neighbours, your friends,
your colleagues, and come on down!
The Tea is $8 per person. There will be three seatings, at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 PM, and
reservations are highly recommended. If you’re planning to come in a group of more
than four people, please be sure to reserve one of the larger tables at each seating.
For reservations, call 250-428-9262 or drop us an email at mail@creston.museum.bc.ca.
The Boy in the Picture recounts Edward Mallandaine’s trek from the bustle of the
city of Victoria to the wilds of the interior of British Columbia, “along tote roads and
the newly laid tracks of the railway, past ‘hostess houses’ and ‘Chinese joss houses,’
into hotels crowded with rough characters, through mountain passes filled with beautiful
scenery, and into the lawlessness of remote towns and railway camps.”
Author Ray Argyle was raised in Creston. He writes, “I had the privilege of knowing
Edward when he was a very old man and I was a young boy. Growing up, we lived
in a house he’d built and I looked forward to him coming around every month to
collect the rent from my dad. That’s when he’d tell me stories of his exploits.”
Ray Argyle will be at the Creston Museum to sign copies of They Boy in the Picture,
from 1:00 to 4:00 PM on Tuesday, August 17. The book retails at $19.99.

KOOTENAY GALLERY
East Gallery: Ride Off Any Horizon - Royden Josephson,
West Gallery: Break Land - Asha Robertson
July 30th - September 12th, 2010 East and West Gallery
Robertson’s exhibition is titled, Break Land. Working with mixed media,
her paintings are executed using acrylic, graphite, ink and encaustic. Her subtle images incorporate the use of space, light and structure to challenge the viewer to consider the impact of humans on the landscape and nature’s ability to adapt and reclaim.
Josephson’s work, in his exhibition, Ride Off Any Horizon, is also influenced by natural structures yet he interprets these using bold colours and abstract, almost architectural images. He has chosen this style because he too wishes to demand a higher level of engagement from the viewer and a more dynamic imagination from the artist. “For both the viewer and the artist, the direction of imagination can ride off any horizon”.
The gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday 10-5pm and Sunday 12-4pm.

ARTICULATE CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Hello everyone,
We are starting to plan the fall/winter issue of ARTiculate magazine, and are looking for interesting story ideas about arts, culture and heritage-related events in the Columbia Basin. What's new and intriguing in your community? Who is doing work of note? What's going on at your desk/in your studio?
Please send me the who, what, when, where and why of your story idea by Sunday, August 15. No completed stories will be accepted at this time. Thanks.
Please note that the fall issue of the magazine will be 16 pages, as opposed to our usual 32. Provincial funding cuts have affected us, too, so we need to reduce the number of pages we print for this issue only, in order to maintain our bottom line.
Thank you for your continued support for ARTiculate magazine. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Please feel free to pass this email on to others who might be interested in contributing their ideas or skills to the magazine.
Cheers,
Margaret Tessman, editor

Three Writers, One Night
How about a sneak peak at the three authors who are shortlisted for One Book One Kootenay? And, of course, a chance to listen to them, too, which you’ll enjoy because their writing is strong and their reading powerful and entertaining. The Nelson Municipal Library will host Luanne Armstrong, Vivien Bowers and Anne DeGrace on Thursday, August 12 at 7 p.m. in the library’s lower level.
A month later the OBOK choice will be announced; an author tour of the Kootenay and Boundary area follows in October.
One Book One Kootenay, which brings together Kootenay and Boundary readers and writers both in person and on-line, is a large and important undertaking. For this August 12 reading, OBOK wishes to acknowledge the support of the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance, the Nelson Municipal Library and the Kootenay Library Federation, representing 19 public libraries in the Kootenay and Boundary area.

From 10am-5pm on both days, you are invited to tour museums and art galleries in the region and artists’ studios that are not normally open to the public. You can start your tour at the Art Gallery of Golden and then cruise down the valley to meet the artists, shop for fine art and crafts, and view demonstrations, special exhibitions and interpretive displays. You can talk with local historians and meet the people behind the scenes during this celebration of culture in the valley.

Further south on the highway, stop in to visit Paula Cravens at the Crazy Ravens Studio in Canal Flats, located in one of the oldest buildings in the village. Paula is an artist who graphically paints the things that inspire her most – the wildlife she encounters on daily walks, rusty old vehicles, vintage photographs, cowgirls, horses and bold women.
In Wasa, Suzanne Ashmore opens her studio so visitors can appreciate her beautiful pottery. Rene Farwig, who studied art in South America and has lived and painted in many countries since, displays his collection of watercolors in his Wasa studio. Now Open! Angelika Werth: Ladies in Tents August 7 to October 17 Gallery B
Local fibre artist Angelika Werth’s exhibition Ladies In Tents is now open! Long recognized for her exceptional skill level in contemporary craft, Werth received the BC Creative Achievement Award in 2008 and was chosen to be this year’s cultural Ambassador in the Arts for the city of Nelson.
In Ladies in Tents, Werth exhibits a series of hand-sewn dresses which explore the idea of the dress as a shelter or dwelling. Her use of house wrap in the making of some of the dresses is derivative of today’s building industry and her use of pioneer canvas tent material in others is evocative of temporary or season dwellings. “The tent dresses are big enough that you could sleep under them,” says Werth.
Angelika Werth started her career with a three-year dressmaking apprenticeship at Yves St. Laurent in Paris which culminated in a Master’s degree in dress design. She currently teaches in the Fibre Department at the Kootenay School of the Arts in Nelson and is sought after to teach dressmaking all over western Canada.

To participate in this two hour workshop contact Touchstones Nelson at 250-352-9813. Spaces are limited. The fee to participate in this workshop is $10.00 for members and $12.00 for non-members. Materials used throughout the workshop are included in the registration fee.
Please note: In order to ensure all participants enjoy the workshop, an adult must accompany participating children and remain for the duration of the workshop. Adults accompanying minors participate free of charge.
Kristi Malakoff: The Golden Bell June 22, 2010 to September 12, 2010 Gallery A Artist Talk: September 9, 2010 at 7pm
Swarms of bees, dancing children, paper cut outs and fruitloop towers are all part of installation artist Kristi Malakoff’s exhibition, The Golden Bell. Inspired by life’s paradoxes, her passion for nature, and her love of making art, Malakoff offers the viewer a glimpse into a fantasy world of awe and beauty. Through her meticulous craftsmanship she transforms everyday materials and familiar objects into works of art that are both playful and subversive.

New For Summer Reading
Long, lazy days of summer inspire reading. You’ve picked a book or two and finally have a couple of days with no obligations? Add this book to your list!
A memoir that is so gripping, so personal, and yet so inspirational that you’ll want to tell all your friends to rush out and buy it, or take it out of the library:
A Raven in My Heart, a memoir by Salmon Arm author and columnist Kay McCracken.
A perfect read for those who love a tangled web of a tale, for those who think that owning a bookstore would be the number one best job in the world, and
for those who have ever lost love, security, or a business. In reality, it’s never “The End.” Sometimes that’s only the beginning.
Kay McCracken is available for interviews and can be reached at kaymcc@telus.net, or by phone 250-832-6083. For more information and reviews of
A Raven in My Heart go to www.gracespringscollective.ca. McCracken’s book is available at your local Chapters/Coles bookstore.

BC SPIRIT FESTIVALS TO CELEBRATE 2010 LEGACY VICTORIA – The Province is providing $3 million this year to support arts and cultural festivals in more than 150 communities across British Columbia through the 2010 Sports and Arts Legacy, announced Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts Kevin Krueger. “We created the Legacy to celebrate and renew the pride and excitement British Columbians experienced during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games,” said Krueger. “This new BC Spirit Festivals program brings together artists, cultural organizations and all British Columbians to celebrate the spirit of B.C. in our communities.” The BC Spirit Festivals program will support festivals in communities during February, the anniversary of the 2010 Games. Spirit festivals will be delivered across B.C. through local arts councils and community partners with the assistance of BC Spirit Committees. Signature Spirit events will also be held in Vancouver and Victoria. The program will be administered by the Assembly of BC Arts Councils, with support from the BC Arts Council. Grants will be based on population and will provide up to $50,000 to produce festivals in communities. Applications will be adjudicated through a peer-review process. Applications for the BC Spirit Festivals program will be accepted from Aug. 1 to Oct. 6, 2010. After this initial intake, support may be available for festivals that embody the vision of BC Spirit, and take place throughout 2011. “The BC Spirit Festivals are an amazing opportunity for our members and affiliates to lead their communities in celebrating B.C.’s diverse cultures,” said Junko Sakamoto, executive director of the Assembly of BC Arts Councils. “We’re looking forward to working with our partners to showcase B.C.’s arts and culture communities.” The BC Spirit Festivals program is the first arts program to be announced under the 2010 Sports and Art Legacy, established in Budget 2010. The Legacy provides $30 million over three years to enhance arts and cultural opportunities for all British Columbians. More Legacy programs will be announced in the fall of 2010. This year the Province is providing a total of more than $30 million directly to artists and arts and culture groups. Since 2001, the Province has delivered $600 million in support of arts and culture, including more than $134 million through the BC Arts Council.
