The Rossland Light Opera Players are holding auditions for their Fall Show,

"Murder At Crooked House".
Directed by Julie Crispin, this is a musical comedy with a twist.  Spooky, suspenseful, but mostly funny, this kinky spoof of TV’s “Private Eye” shows of the fifties features Hercules Porridge, the famous Hoboken detective. Whodunit? Was it Jeebes, the butler? Anguish Crispie, the mystery writer? Rebecca Fitzwilliam, the landlady of Crooked House? Ore one of the other oddball house-guests? Lots of zany action as the eccentric Colonel Chutney keeps attacking the house with his “Victorian Regiment.”
Read through happens Sept 12 @ 6:30pm and the auditions will be Sept 13th at 6:30pm, both at the Rossland Light Opera Players Hall at 2054 Washington.
Visit www.rlop.ca for more info.

The Kootenay Gallery

In the East Gallery of the Kootenay Gallery of Art in Castlegar, Claire Kujundzic of Wells, BC will be presenting an exhibition entitled Message from the Beetle.  Her work is a response to the impact on our forests as a result of the pine beetle epidemic. Caught between her repulsion to the devastation of our forests by the pine beetle and her fascination with the marks and coloration of the beetles’ work, Kujundzic has rendered a version of our forests demise with care and sensitivity.  Her giant canvases will fill the gallery reflecting this devastation while at the same time carrying a message of hope and serving as a tribute to the forests of British Columbia during this International Year of the Forest. As Kujundzic herself states,” the making of this work has been challenging, but it has also made me more hopeful.  Doing it has forced me to confront large, complex issues, but it has also prompted me to notice our connectedness to the planet and to see the green that grows through”.  This provocative exhibit will encourage the viewer to examine a subject of particular significance to this resource based region.

Building the Building - Building Community, a photographic exhibition in the West Gallery reflects and documents 40 years of building, maintaining, and initiating community activities by the volunteers of the Vallican Whole Community Centre and the Rural Alternatives Research and Training Society. The Vallican Whole is an architecturally interesting and beautiful building created by the women, men and children of the Slocan Valley and beyond. The Vallican Whole was a long time home for the Whole School (1976-2008), and has become a centre for the education and celebration of ideas and practices for producing, buying and eating local goods. This exhibition, curated by Helen Sebelius, documents through iconic and everyday photographs, taken and collected by Marcia Braundy, the construction, maintenance, community initiatives and celebratory gatherings. It also includes the recent development of the ecological sculpture park on the site. These shows will run until September 10th.

The Kootenay Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10- 5pm and is located across from the Castlegar Airport on Heritage Way. www.kootenaygallery.com

Where will we be in 100 years? Will we be fitter, stronger, happier, more productive?  Raymond doesn't care, but he does care about you, and how you're coping. He wants to help you be all that you can be in 2112, he wants to show you how to take advantage of the possibilities and hopefully, hopefully, he won't have a meltdown and get fired again. Hopefully. A satirical look at where we may end up, and how one man tries to survive in the face of mounting obstacles and diminishing returns.
Featuring new music and all new material!
WARNING: CONTAINS THE FUTURE. COULD FREAK YOU OUT

And now, a Back-To-School-Special Update from Pilotcopilot

My Summer Vacation by Pilotcopilot

Well, the summer started early, at least for me, when DECK was at the UNO fest in Victoria in May.  The first time doing the show in front of a non-Nelson audience was a bit of a shocker ("This part was HILARIOUS in Nelson!") but then Lucas, my little puppet man, remembered how to Act and, despite thinking the show started an hour later then it actually did the second night and getting a panicked phone call from the Front of House person and having to Ride Like The Wind through the streets of Victoria to arrive at ten minutes to curtain, he had a good couple of shows.  (read a review from the Victoria run here http://culturevulturevictoria.com/uno-fest-deck-or-how-i-instigated-then-overcame-an-existential-crisis-through-home-improvement-chris-felling/).

June brought the realization that, as fun as having a puppet theatre in your back yard might be, staying sane is better, so Pilotcopilot has suspended the creation of the Red Fox Backyard Puppet Theatre until the children are older and the roof is done.  It Will Happen!  At Some Point!

At the end of July, The Cromoli Brothers performed a brand new show SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER in downtown Kaslo!  They had the audience up and dancing the Hippy Swirl and the Dirty Hipster and managed to drive away an Albertan couple by referencing Stephen Harper as Optimus Prime Minister, the Evil Robot Leader ("Those eyes!  Those ice cold eeeeyyyyyyeeeees!").   Emboldened by this success they toured to Wells, BC for a couple of shows in August and were not eaten by bears. Yes!

In Late August, the Pilotcopilot Team (Lucas, Krista, Frances and Maeve) travelled to Gabriola Island so little puppet man could perform DECK at the Gabriola TheatreFestival. At 3 in the afternoon. In a big tent. With a mildly sprained ankle. Sustained while he was leaping about oceanside rocks. That, unbeknownst to him, can sometimes have a very thin and completely invisible layer of slime on them. He Persevered and had a great show, fuelled by adrenalin, Advil, and a great crowd.

All in all, it was a great summer.  Now...its BACK TO WORK!

Stay tuned for news on an upcoming Kootenay Tour of DECK and Whisperings of a Cromoli Christmas.

Many Thanks, Greg

oxygen art centre news

UPON REFLECTION:
GROUP EXHIBITION BY ALFORD, BOWES, GIBSON
GALLERY HOURS September 2 - 24, 1-5pm Oxygen Art Centre Nelson (alley entrance)
Upon Reflection is a collaborative exhibition by three artists. It will be shown at Oxygen Art Centre

from September 2 to 24 and gallery hours will be 1-5pm, Wednesday to Saturday.
Sarah Alford, Jennifer Bowes, and Dee Gibson create works that examine the patterns and details of our natural surroundings using everyday materials such as hot glue, baking parchment, butchers cord, and staples. Through their labour-intensive, process-driven, and site-responsive practice, they create a space for contemplating and re-imagining what it means to know the world.
This will be the first exhibition for the three artists who are also long-time friends. Although living in different provinces, they communicate online and offer feedback to each other on an ongoing basis.
On exhibiting in Nelson for the first time, Sarah Alford said, “Nelson is a wonderful city with a dynamic art scene. There are world-class artists living here and we wanted to be a part of this vibrant culture.” The suggestion to exhibit at Oxygen came from none other than Bill Metcalfe, a well-known name in the Nelson arts community as well as Sarah Alford’s uncle.
"[Sarah Alford] shares with the Oxygen Art Centre a delightful, innovative spirit. That's why I think her work will fit well at Oxygen and why I suggested, a few years ago, that she try to get an exhibit there. I am really excited that it is actually happening," says Bill Metcalfe.
As individual artists, Alford, Bowes, and Gibson each have a unique background in the arts. Across their various disciplines and approaches, some common themes in their work are silence, fragility, and living in a rural landscape.
Sarah Alford currently resides in Halifax where she teaches in the department of Historical and Critical Studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University. She has studied Art History, Jewellery, Metalsmithing, and Fiber and Material Studies and her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally.
Jennifer Bowes is an Alberta native who is a full-time instructor and Program Coordinator in the Visual Arts Department at the Northern Lights College in BC. She specialized in Painting and Drawing at the University of Alberta. A seasoned globe-trotter, she has spent time in Scotland, England, Italy, Turkey, and Nepal.
Dee Gibson grew up in Ontario and graduated with a BFA in Painting from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University. Her work can currently be found in the collection of the Art Bank of Nova Scotia. She now resides in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Join us this fall for some exciting arts education programming at Oxygen Art Centre for adults and youth!
September courses include the ever-popular  “Blues Singing I” with Bessie Wapp, and brand new, by request, “Blues Singing II”!
If you are still yearning to make that video and get it up on YouTube, Miriam Needoba is teaching “Do It Yourself (D.I.Y) Filmmaking for Amateurs” again this semester. If you have already taken this course or have similar experience and want to work on a video project in a mentored, group environment sign up for “D.I.Y. Filmmaking – Projects and Workshops”.
For the literary types, October brings “Fiction and Fundamentals” with Brad Carr and “Playwriting” with Cassie Beecham, and for those wanting to get their hands dirty (with paint, that is) try “Collage Painting” with Natasha Smith, “Inside Out: Figure Painting” with Deb Thompson and “The Essential Figure: Drawing” with Murray Kimber.
For dates and more information, check out our website www.oxygenartcentre.org and select “classes” or look in the Selkirk College Continuing Education Catalogue under Oxygen Art Centre.
Registration is through Kootenay School of the Arts: phone 250-352-2821 or in-person at 606 Victoria Street in Nelson BC.  Stay tuned for announcements for the new children and youth arts programming also starting in October. We hope to see all of you at Oxygen this fall!

A CUTTING EDGE EXHIBIT– HOW THE SS MOYIE WAS BUILT

The Kootenay Lake Historical Society invites the public to an Open House at the SS Moyie National Historic Site on Sunday, September 18th.  The site will be open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with free admission and refreshments that day.  At 1:30 PM a ribbon-cutting ceremony will mark the official opening of our new exhibit of historic tools and other items related to shipbuilding and repair. After the ceremony the public is invited to view the exhibit, attend historical presentations in the lower level of the visitor centre, and, of course, visit the SS Moyie.  Those who wish to join the Kootenay Lake Historical Society, or renew existing memberships, may do so during the Open House.

The items in the new exhibit come from an historically significant collection bequeathed to the Society by the late Bill Curran, a long-time supporter of the Moyie project and former board member.  Bill’s father, Jack Curran, worked as a shipwright in the CPR yards at Nelson, Nakusp and Okanagan Landing.  The bequest also includes the handsome sideboard which stood in the SS Moyie’s dining saloon from 1898 until the early 1930s.  It was made at the Nelson shipyard, where the Moyie was launched, and has now returned to its old position aboard the ship.

The Society wishes to thank members of the Curran family who assisted in the transfer of the collection to Kaslo, and to the volunteers who carried out the necessary curatorial work.  Grant assistance for the exhibit was received from the Columbia Basin Trust, the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance and the Community Fund of             North Kootenay Lake.

The national historic significance of the SS Moyie was officially recognized in 1958.  When she retired the year before, she was the oldest and most complete working vessel of her kind in Canada.  This statement stands as testimony to the effort and skills of the Nelson shipyard crews who built the ship, then kept her in serviceable condition for nearly 60 years.  The SS Moyie first visited Kaslo in 1899; her last call as a working ship was in 1957.  Today there are still people in the community who will proudly tell you they had travelled aboard the Moyie, most of whom must have been quite young.  It has been more than half a century since the people of Kaslo brought her ashore for the last time, long years of devoted conservation effort.  An iconic paddlewheel steamer forms part of the coat of arms of the Village of Kaslo – most certainly the SS Moyie!

The arts give us a context for exploring the space between:  between our inner lives and our conscious awareness and between ourselves and society. This workshop will explore how what is most meaningful can have its rightful place in our lives both within and without. The arts expose our values and ideals in a creative and playful way. This work is intended as both personal exploration as well as professional development. All that is required is an interest in the healing effects of the creative force within us and its impact on the world around us. Several art forms will be utilized including drawing, writing, music and dance/theatre.  This is a low skill, high sensitivity training. Bring your willingness to discover where humor and seriousness meet in the realm of Deep Play.

Creative Mentoring
October 3rd, 2011

This workshop is for members of the community from all backgrounds who are interested in how to help youth channel their energy into something positive and nurturing. Simple and effective writing, movement, drawing, music and theatre techniques will be taught as well as some simple and effective counseling skills that accompany the work.

Markus Alexander has conducted hundreds of workshops in this area of difficulty and challenge for the past 25 plus years most recently in Kingston, Jamaica where their at-risk youths, particularly young men ,  are in great need of timely, effective help.

From bike sharing to eating locally, this exhibit will feature efforts like this that are immediate and accessible. Although seemingly small in relation to the scale of the problem, individual and local action is an important step in addressing climate change and environmental degradation.

Also featured will be an exciting in-gallery contest, Ideas for Change, a showcase of local ideas addressing climate change that would benefit from a little money. Visitors to the gallery will be given a coin that they can either choose to keep, or put towards the entry of their choice. All entries can keep the change they collect, and the two entries from each category (under 18, 18+) that accumulate the most money will be given additional prizes at the end of the exhibit.

Night or Day: Day Clothes vs. Evening Wear

from the Touchstones Nelson Permanent Collection

September 3 to November 20, 2011
Do clothes make the person? This exhibit from the Touchstones Nelson permanent collection will compare materials, designs and functionality, and reference the pieces to historical roles of gender, labour requirements and social status. Guest curated by Katherine van der Veen.

Exhibition in Gallery B:

heartlab presents: Re-surface

August 27 to November 13, 2011

Drawing on work originally created in direct response to the local geography/ecosystem of Calgary and area, Re-surface will be a 3-Dimensional participatory drawing/diorama that will playfully represent the essence of words as sound and image as space by drawing upon the beauty of the Kootenay valley.
Heartlab is a collaborative effort fusing the talents and vision of two artists – Anita Levesque and Bradley Smith. Combining text and visual imagery, the couple explore the dynamics between two distinct forms of communication, sometimes bridging the gap of both worlds, and in other instances creating a tension between the two. Heartlab places an emphasis on process and time-based projects. Utilizing various drawing materials, manual typewriter and block printing tools, the duo create multi-sensory, installation narratives reminiscent of illustrated story books.

Collaborative Art Making Workshop with heartlab

Thursday, September 8th, 7 to 9pm

Admission is $7 for non-members, $5 for members. Materials provided.

All are welcome – no experience necessary. Pairs of any kind are encouraged to come (e.g. friends, siblings, couples). Participants will playfully explore the creative dynamics between text and image, and between one another as collaborators. The resulting artwork will be shown in the hallway display cases leading to gallery B (with permission from the participants).

Participants are asked to register in advance to secure their seat, as there are only 12 spaces. Please call Touchstones Nelson to register at 250-352-9813.

Conference 2011:
"Come Together - Right Now:
Collaboration, Creativity, Community"

October 3-6, 2011, Cranbrook, BC

In August 1967, the Beatles met Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.  He advised them to “Come Together – Right Now,” to heal the growing rift and dissension between the four members of the band and unite them as a single cohesive unit once again. Many museums and art galleries today find themselves facing similar challenges.

At this year's Conference, we’ll come together, and work together, in collaborative and creative ways to bridge our differences and strengthen our similarities.  Come celebrate all that makes us unique, and share in our collective movement to Come Together – Right Now!

Cafe Books - reading recommendations

Bossypants by Tina Fey

A must-read for anyone who is a fan of SNL, has had a bad haircut or just needs a good laugh.

Anyone who has seen Tina Fey on Saturday Night Live will really enjoy this book. Fey’s wit and use of sarcasm really comes through in this book.  The writing is quick and entertaining. The book has a lot of humor, but also offers great advice and new twists on old life lessons as Fey retells her most memorable moments, stories and milestones from her life…so far.

Creative (smaller) cities
In this issue: A focus on the presence and impacts of culture in cities, especially smaller municipalities, based on a number of discussion papers, presentations and other resources that explore aspects of creative cities.

Bigger thinking for smaller cities: How arts and culture can tackle economic, social and democratic engagement challenges in smaller cities

Regional Cities East (England), September 2010

http://www.rce.org.uk/?P=P_KNOWLEDGE_CENTRE_CASES

This discussion paper provides British examples of how the arts and culture sector can help stimulate and sustain economic growth, build a sense of shared identity, promote community cohesion, and help address challenges regarding infrastructure and skill levels. According to the paper, smaller cities “offer many of the right characteristics for the arts and culture to flourish”, such as easier networking and sharing of ideas, a high quality of life, and low carbon emissions.

The discussion paper’s six principles to “place the arts and culture at the core of local strategies” might be of interest to municipalities of any size:

1.      Arts and culture can act as a stimulus to complementary economic activity.

2.      Arts and culture can revitalise and make effective use of under-utilised physical assets.

3.      Arts and culture that is rooted in the community can build into a strong positive identity for a place at a local, national and international level.

4.      Arts and culture can demystify community differences and bring diverse cultures together.

5.      Arts and culture can engage communities and encourage active citizenship.

6.      Arts and culture can engage marginalised groups to take part in collective action and help them to achieve their potential.

The paper argues that “a thriving arts and culture sector is an essential component of a prosperous, stable and happy society. But more than just adding colour and escape to life, arts and culture are at the very vanguard of tackling serious national issues”.

The discussion paper recommends four policy-related measures:

·         Local authorities should “collaborate to maximise resources and impact”. Linkages could include pooled resources and shared cultural services teams, as well as collaborative commissions.

·         Creative public engagement strategies should be developed in order to strengthen communities and enable social cohesion and active citizenship.

·         Local, regional and national authorities could develop functional cultural areas through “a programme of co-investment that focuses resources on key assets, organisations and high impact interventions. Public money and the combined advocacy of the partners can be used to lever other sources of investment finance and philanthropy.”

·         Creative leadership should be harnessed: “Arts leaders can play a significant role as civic leaders, collaborating with local authorities to shape local priorities, advocating for the value and contribution of arts and culture to future well-being and prosperity, and driving increased philanthropy locally.”

The paper concludes that successful programs are built on existing strengths. “There is no single model that can be applied uniformly. Activities and interventions must respond to a vision that is specific to each city’s strengths and needs in order to deliver high impact results.”
